Per Joss the movie should be 2hrs and 15minutes in length, he has cut about 45 minutes of footage to bring it to that length. No plans for a "director cut" dvd so hopefully all the cut footage is on the bonus section of the DVD.

Minor spoiler: he confirms the attacking army are neither Kree nor Skrulls.

Speculation: the Phalanx? or one of Asgard's enemies?

Expect plenty of Marvel easter eggs in the movie, don't expect easter eggs or references to Joss' prior works.

After a spate of disappointments at the movies, I've got a lot more riding on Whedon's Avengers than I would have thought.

I'm guessing frost giants are the baddies, with some new technology Loki gets access to. You don't need to explain frost giants much, as Loki is half frost-giant and they were introduced in Thor. Any other bad guy would need to be introduced, spending more time on that in a movie already crowded with characters to give screen time. Loki has gone to his roots, and now the frost giants are willing to invade earth behind him. Done.

Some more Whedon comments as of today:

"With the superhero epic nearly complete, Joss Whedon continues his media blitz, this time with Total Film Magazine. Courtesy of a detailed article summary at Comic Book Movie, Whedon speaks to his initial pitch for the film, why it's the definitive Hulk movie and subtle references to the comic book source material.

"This isn't the kind of movie where we're going to wink at the audience," Whedon told Total Film. "There's a great deal of humor and there are a couple of things where people will go, 'Oh!' if they're very into Marvel. Here and there I've thrown references, tiny things I remember [from the comics], but it's not one of those things where you look at and go, 'Oh, that guy and that guy! It's not 'Where's Waldo?'"

The director further clarified his goals for Earth's Mightiest Movie, saying he doesn't intend for "The Avengers" to merely be a first movie in a series.

"We DO give a nod to a greater problem than the one solved in this film," he said. "I'm a great believer in the idea that if you make the first one to be a 'first one,' then you have already failed. As much as we want to service the idea of a film in a franchise, I want this to be a satisfying film experience. I don't want people to go out saying,

'When's the next part?' I want people to say, 'Oh, I want to see that again!'"

He also definitively and completely debunked rumor of a Spider-Man cameo in the film saying, "There is no Spider-Man cameo in this movie!""

Hm a nod to a greater problem then the movie's main threat.... the tesseract is lost in the final battle but after the credits we see THANOS of Titan finding it? A skrull armada coming to Earth? Kree armada? Can't be Galactus as he's a Fantastic Four problem first and foremost. The time traveling warlord Kang? Ultron?

I'm excited about this whole opportunity for Whedon. He's been given this huge chance to show everybody what he can do and I sincerely doubt he's going to disappoint. This is going to open a lot of doors for him and hopefully the good mix of action, comedy, and characterization that he's known for sets a new standard for these kind of superhero films and lights a fire under WB to get their act together the right way.

It would be nice if the guy behind Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse, Firefly, Serenity, various comics, and Dr. Horrible finally made it big.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

Will be watching all The Avengers lead up movies starting next month, finally getting really really excited. I think Trailer 2 did it for me, up until then all the marketing for this movie was pretty bad.

The Japanese trailer was just released. It has footage not seen in the previous trailers including Pepper Potts and a great shot of the helicarrier taking off.

Wow!

Some nice extras in that. Watching the bit where Thor asks Tony Stark "Take away your armor and what are?" makes me think that JW should be good at writing Stark, being all quippy and stuff...

Okay that trailer contains even more awesome then the USA version

I looked at some of the extra Loki army scenes and I get more convinced that he has somehow taken control of the Frost Giants OR they are the alien race from Ultimate Avengers. I'm leaning more towards the aliens as Marvel movies tend to mix in elements from the Ultimates series at times and we already have Loki causing the heroes to team up like he did back in the 60's.

That would be the Chitauri aka Ultimate Skrulls, and Whedon said no Skrulls

BTW, the german trailer has only some extra banter between Cap and Iron Man.
link
and appearently Banner and Stark get along pretty well.
