Ads: a suggestion on how everyone could win.
Interesting suggestion especially since the new market has been going Paragon's e-mails have pop up ads. [Link Removed] ~Mod13
They may have beaten you to the punch.
The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.
Just dropping this post in here from Darth's other thread in case people didn't see it.
We never include any popup ads, or even basic javascript functionality in the e-mails.
The most recent e-mail should look just like this, with no popups or non-COH ads. http://newsletters.ncsoft.com/emp/co...-02-28/na.html If you're seeing any non-NCsoft advertising or popups when viewing our e-mail newsletters, it's highly likely due to a third party application. |
I've actually been thinking lately that they should make the "splash screens" that show when a zone/map is loading be an ad, and then offer people who opt in to seeing those instead of splash screens get a small market points reward or something. Freems could even be offered the option to see "video ads" play before they can officially log in and, in exchange, for each month they have that option selected, they can earn one of the VIP Reward tokens.
Just some ideas that wouldn't be at all intrusive but would allow for some increased revenue for the game.
Just whatever you do, I DONT want to see Rommy suddenly wearing an Under Armor shirt and holding a Diet Coke in his hand.
Though an Abercrombie and Fitch style cutscene with Foreshadow might ok. :-P
Tying anything to points can be exploited. If you make an action count towards points, beyond actually whipping out the funds in RL, or just keeping a VIP account on, then someone will farm it.
It almost like a Rule of MMORPGS: If it exists, there will be a farm of it.
Of course, if there is a list of rules, I'm game to hear of them.
You're not wrong, I just don't think tyin' the ads to any in-game gain is a good idea myself.
The cost is in desiring to be the Nth degree of whatever the character is. And for that... Stop. Wallet time.

Now, I am going to say that the majority of players put up with cutscenes because of a story. I know I'm annoyed as heck about having to WAIT AND WAIT so I can continue to play, or, as with the WWD arcs, waiting to get out and go on to the next mission. That's REALLY irritating.
Oh, I get it, it's the story, and that's fine, but man... I'm ready to move on, thanks.
Forcing me to watch some ad? You can forget that noise, or there'd better be a 'no cutscene' option available.
/Come to think of it, that should be an option anyway. Perhaps a "press Esc to quit cutscene." In the case of a team, majority rules.
August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.

Well... perhaps I was premature about that whole 'signing off' thing... - 11-9-2012
No way.
Nuh uh.
Nope.
Don't even think about it Cowboy.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
Maybe freemiums would be willing to watch ads, but the day I'm forced to watch an ad on my VIP account is the day I cancel it.

The day I'm forced to watch an ad on my freemium account is the day I uninstall.

You'd think people would learn from past failures and drop the in game advertising suggestions.
Remember how advertising on the billboards failed?
1. Nearly everyone turned them off.
2. Only two or three companies ever tried advertising in the game.
So what's next when this fails? Having product placement on the characters themselves?
Do. Not. Want.
The topic of advertisement has come and go and come back.
I'm neither for nor against it, i am all about the game, and if it will help the game/development without having a negative invasion into the game, i'm all for it.
several plans were discussed on this thread, and i still like my own idea regarding this.

Thank you for posting, everyone. You made a lot of good points and I find myself wondering what led me to post an idea that could so easily ruin such a great game with petty annoyances. If I get an idea in the near future, I'll put more thought into it before opening my mouth. Thank you for your time!

Looking forward to your next idea.
Ads, people who work on them and all marketing people can plunge into hell and rot there. Oh wait, they'd feel right at home. Darn.

What killed them was that only one or two advertisers were even interested in the first place, thus EVERY SINGLE billboard was the same picture. Some shoes and something else that I forget.

Actually, the original suggestion could easily be implemented if you used the method I described. That method doesn't have anything that possibly COULD be farmed. It was either "you have option turned on and then get a monthly reward for it" or you don't. And no one mentioned ads in -cut scenes- except as a joke about product placement. What was mentioned were ads in place of -splash pages-, you know...those static screen images that show up when you first load the game or a zone/map. So instead of a giant image of Talos Island with a tip that says "go. hunt. kill skulls." the person with the option turned on instead sees a giant image of an ATI card that says "Radeon FX: Game like a hero." The player with that option on for the entire month gets, at the end of the month, 125 Paragon Points or, as I suggested, the freemium player gets one Vet reward token.
By the way, this could be done in a very "game freindly way" too, having the Radeon ad actually feature Positron placing it in some high tech device, or having Dr. Aeon pouring a Monster energy drink into an empty can of whatever that food stuff is called in the Rogue Isles with a tagline that says "Monster energy: refuel yourself."
If they have trouble selling these at first, they could very easily team up with an already established web advertising company to sell the splash pages as a single web ad, and once they have an idea how many people are watching them and how many screens a day are seen, it suddenly becomes much easier to market.
Your argument is thoroughly convincing and logical!
Now, I'm new to mmorpgs, and this idea may have been pitched before, but bear with me, as I am a noob.
I've been serfing some of these forums, and I noticed a fair amout of complaining that the new system can get to be pricey with all the money spent on points, and what not. Now, personally, I say that if you want all the content, you have to expect a price tag. But I think there may be a system that could help Paragon Studios rake in a little money from the free players and allow them to get some of those pesky points. Ads: we see them every day, what is watching some in exchange for a few paragon points thrown your way? This system works on websites every day, youtube plays them before some vids, even some atms are using them to earn that little extra. Mind you, it would have to be set up in such a way as to be optional, otherwise it defeats its reason to be. And it needs to be so that the player can go to it, in stead of it bugging the player on a regular basis like some kind of demented pop-up. For my part, I think it would be easier to become a VIP and be done with it, however; there are many who feel this is a viable option. The ad compay is happy, more players are happy, and Paragon's programers get a nice Christmas bonus... or Hanukkah bonus... or whatever. Anyway, if I'm wrong, just tell me so I stop cluttering up the forum from now on.
