I think it's beyond awesome that they made it a TED clip.

Does it bother anyone else that the most unrealistic part of that clip and the speech given was the fact that so many people attended a TED conference and perhaps the name of the guy... Weyland...

1.) No, because thanks to videos being released to youtube and the internet TED has become more and more popular over the past few years. Talks that used to have an audience in the double digits now have hundreds of attendees. And this video takes place 11 years from now. Considering how popular TED has become with the general public it would not be at all unreasonable to expect it to become an arena type event open to the general public.

2.) Ummmmm... I don't even know what to say to this one. Where in gods name did you think the the name of the Weyland corporation came from? Did you believe that the founders picked a random made up word? Most corporations are named after either what they represent such as GE and IBM or after their founders such as Johnson & Johnson, Abercrombie and Fitch... Weyland.

Who's to say what's going to be unrealistic 11 years from now anyway?
That's usually the beauty of what you can do with science fiction.

The point was missed by you completely I see...

Of all the things the guy said and that were in the video, those 2 things were the most unlikely.

Yeah but being bothered by the "unlikely" parts of a science fiction story is borderline ridiculous. Do you get bothered by the warp drives and transporters in Star Trek? Sure they are probably the most "unlikely" parts of that franchise but if you didn't have those kinds of things you wouldn't have a science fiction story.

That was an AWESOME clip and wonderful setup for the things to come. Can't wait thanks for sharing.

The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.

I'm about to defend Durakken. Or maybe just translate a bit.

He's not saying those things are unlikely, and/or complaining about that. He's saying those things are NOT unlikely at all, but if you had to pick the MOST unlikely things, those are the two things you would pick.

In other words, everything in there sounds entirely plausible.

Edit to add: Also, that was a geat clip and I am really looking forward to this movie. Like a lot.

Guy Pearce is definately doing an amazing John Hurt there character-wise, his old-world English accent, inflections and body language absolutely oozes confidence.

I'm not a fan of most viral stuff but this is great and really helps set the scene for the movie.

OK... but being "bothered" by that kind of thing in a sci-fi story is still pretty mind-boggling. Some of the best science fiction is considered the "best" because the fictional parts of it are so close to being likely or plausible that the story tends to resonate that much better with its intended audience.

Basically it almost sounds like Durakken is complaining that this clip was too realistic and that there weren't enough "fictiony" parts to it or some-such. I suppose I am completely missing the point why I should be "bothered" by what's shown in this clip.

Maybe he was trying to say that we should be bothered by the greater idea that such a dark future with an evil corporation is actually possible. But if that's the case his post did not make it very clear that's what he was trying to say. *shrug*

I think this is the point he was making. I suppose it was a little vague, but that's what I took from it.

Perhaps you could improve your attempts at making your points.

Also, this movie can't get here fast enough.

okay kiddos....lets play follow along here.....

1. Weyland Industries website, which I am going to go out on a limb here and say that it is some how tied into the movie Prometheus...

and

2. The above website references the Ted.com website....its like its all tied together...../end sarcasm

Yes I get what Durraken is saying...however this (again going out on a limb) is just setup to the actual Prometheus movie....

Besides if you had watched the somewhat god awful Alien Vs. Predator movies you would know that Weyland and Yutani got their grubby mits on advanced alien tech and that is more than likely what made them go in search of those "beings"....

I agree you can have a workable space sci-fi show without transporters. But Whedon solved his "no warp drive" conundrum by coming up with a single "solar system" that had something like 200 planets in it. While one could argue that warp drives are pure fantasy the idea that you can solve the technical problem of traveling galactic distances by just cramming a silly number of planets into one solar system is almost equally nonsensical from a realism point of view.

Don't get me wrong I like both Star Trek and Firefly. I'm just saying that as long as you're dealing with having to travel from planet to planet a sci-fi story is going to have to come up with some "semi-magical excuse" that allows it to be possible regardless.

Actually it was a system of 5 stars and 7 brown dwarfs or protostars that they were able to ignite.

Right, but these exact details don't matter -that- much. Obviously I pulled the 200 number out of thin air.

The important point was that these franchises basically came up with "workarounds" for being able to have a whole bunch of inhabited planets all close enough to each other that they either didn't need FTL travel at all (in the case of Firefly) or they could get away with some sub-light ships that could travel between planets (like in BSG). Star Trek's "magical" solution to the problem was simply having warp drive to get to different solar systems all over the galaxy.

Different science-fictiony explainations for the same issue that had to be dealt with.
