Powerlevel to 50?
the classic powerlevel is to get a lvl 50 to run a map on the max difficulty, rinse and repeat until you are desired level
i personaly like to PL my toons in the 20-30 range then play them mostly normally (usually only doing tfs or stuff like the midnighter arc and whatnot)
i also personally like to PL toons past most of the early level stuff because i hate playing the low lvls and because ive run through all the arcs so many times ive almost memorized them lol
With an Elec/Elec/Mu Scrapper you can powerlevel yourself on any Freak map in AE. I assume you have cash? Or can buy Kinetic Combats on Paragon Market? Kin Cmbt, Reactive Armor, some LOTG love and you are near S/L def cap on an Elec. You can wade through Freaks until your eyes glaze over, they wont even get close to putting you down. I leveled myself from 48-50 in about an hour on Freaks with my Elec/Elec Scrap. I would think hopping off the DFB train around 22 and onto AE farm you could prob get to 40+ in less than a day. A hard day, but still. An Elec/Elec Brute would be stronger still, but I prefer burst Crit damage to Fury these days.
Thanks for the tip, think that would work with them running me until I get up around their level? Any other ideas?
I actually prefer doing the story line because there are so many arcs you can take that lead to (sorta) different conclusions. Choose contact X this time, and Y the next, and after those contacts comes more X/Y splits. It's fun to see where they go, even though they pretty much all stay around the same place. In this case though, I just need to get this new guy up there so I can help my buddies out.
This is kinda ironic that I'm even asking, cause I can't stand people that run around yelling "Power level me!"... *LOL*
I'm looking to create a character that would compliment my friend's characters like a tank, healer, or possibly even mastermind. I'd then like to get to their level as quickly as possible so I can join the team and give them a better chance at survival (and getting themselves to 50).

Thanks for the reply Blue. Not sure if I'm gonna do a scrapper or not yet, but if I do that certainly sounds like a good plan... And yes, I do have cash to burn. *LOL*
I've highlighted the part that is, quite honestly, a waste of time. Make the new toon, PL him to 22 so you can slot SO's, and you're in business. You don't need to be anywhere NEAR their level to team with them and make a huge difference. ESPECIALLY if you pick a powerset like force field.

Ahh, so that sounds like a plan then. Shields would definitely make them less squishy, and with a healer I could certainly help keep them up. Wouldn't really handle the agro well though. Any thoughts on that? They both have holds but their problem seems to be when they get ganked, which happens quite often.
They really aren't very good with blasters... LOL ...Still, they don't wanna give them up cause they're so close to 50.
So I'm leaning more towards a Healer/Protector classed character I guess. I'm so used to being a tank or blaster.
the best thing for a squishy is defense and mez protection in terms of buffs
if you wanted to be a melee type to hold aggro that will work too
I'm thinking of leveling ease... I've got a tanker already at 12 right now but have nothing in the way of defense on him. He does have some basic medical though, but not enough to help them at 45. They would have to pretty much stay right beside him in combat.
I'm leaning more towards the def/mez build, but I think I'll either need them to help me get it leveled up or find a ton of sewer runs.
My original thought was to get that tanker to 45 so I could keep the agro off of them, but it doesn't look like there is an easy way to get a tanker leveled up fast, without a bunch of 50's helping out. *LOL*
if you want a high buff set then go with empathy, it has high defense buf with fortitude, heals, and mez protection for allies
pairing that with illusion control would make you a really good team partner because you will be able to use your pets as aggro holders/alpha takers
Hmmm, that's actually really appealing. What would you suggest for leveling it up quickly though?
(Yes, I hate the question too, but it's obvious this guy will have to start at level 1 which is NO good to 45's... *LOL*)
Team with your upper-level friends doing even-level content. Even when you're little, empathy is super powerful. And if your friends don't mind a day or two of plowing through whites and yellows (it'll make them feel super powerful to blast through wimpy enemies), your ill/emp will be 18 and get delicious, delicious Phantom Army in no time.

Hmmm... They probably won't like that, but if I explain to them how much more XP debt they'll earn without him it'll probably bring them around. *LOL*
That's actually what I was doing (solo) with my tanker. Started him two days ago and just kept plowing through yellows and oranges, but after 2 days and only getting to level 14 I was starting to get frustrated.
if you PL him at all i would at least try to get to 12-15 i think somewhere around there is when you would get fortitude which is one of the best powers in empathy
I think you can get Fortitude at 14?... Your probably right on that one.
Fortitude at 12 for Controllers.

You can get to 12 in two runs at DFB, no matter what class you pick. You can get a Tank with Taunt to around 14-15 with three runs through DFB, decent armors already. That might be enough to tank for 2 blasters at 45 or so though. At 17 you can throw on kinetic Combats (tuned) drop in the two +3% Def Globals and have a seriously tough Tank with Taunt that could prob do the job unless they have the knob turned up high.
Before I start, I know that power leveling is somewhat of a taboo topic. Before you flame please understand a few things. I've taken more characters than I care to count up to level 20 and 30, a baker's dozen to 40, and two all the way to 50. I'm a bit of a character making fanatic so all but one of my 50's have been restarted a dozen times over and no longer exist. I'm not asking about power leveling because I'm one of those "I just want a level 50" idiots. I actually like the CoH storyline, and I already have a 50 that I can be proud of.
At any rate, after that's all said and done, the reason I want to know if there is a "quick" way to level up is because I have a couple friends currently at 43 and 45 who are both running blasters and aren't doing very well together. They're too squishy, as it were, and getting very frustrated with all their XP debt. My current level 50 is also a blaster, which doesn't help much. I'm looking to create a character that would compliment my friend's characters like a tank, healer, or possibly even mastermind. I'd then like to get to their level as quickly as possible so I can join the team and give them a better chance at survival (and getting themselves to 50). I'm used to running the story lines (cause I like them) but that takes forever to level. I've never really leveled any other way, thus my dilemma. So, if anyone has any pointers on getting some quick grinding (or whatever) up to 45ish or even 50 I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance everyone. |
Empathy is a good choice for this. Don't just look at the heals but the buffs. You can easily keep Fortitude on both of your buddies. And, they will love you for the Clear Mind keeping them free of status effects. Since your buddies are blasters, maybe I'd suggest a Controller with Empathy as the secondary set. Any controller primary works well with it so just pick the one you like.
But, any support set that increases their survival would be good. Almost all of them have things you could use to help your buddies.

Thanks for the great tips everyone!
Blue: I'm gonna see if I can get a few DFB runs in tonight, it sounds like the way to go to get to a "useful" level relatively quick.
DrGemini: Yea, no free ride here. My only goal here is to help them get their characters to 50 since they don't have 50's yet and are getting really frustrated with XP debt. I think we'll all agree that when a game stops being fun you usually find another game, and I don't want them loosing their love for CoH.
I tried helping them with my L50 blaster but I usually have a tank pulling agro so needless to say it didn't go well. In addition, my blaster is like 3 years old and hasn't been respeced for ANY new content so he's quite messed up right now.
If you all have access to AE then that is thee fastest way to level. Search fire cave farm it's even a players choice. It can get a level 1 to 30 in a single run on +4/8 settings and is what I use to skip the low levels cause I can clear it in like in less then an hour. Never timed myself but I used a SG prestige booster and it was still active when I finished. Me and a friend trade runs so it's easy.
Ill/Emp is a good team build, you wouldn't need to PL that high, but at 18 you get Phantom Army and 20 Fortitude, then SOs at 22. So that's a huge swing from in effectiveness from 17 to 22.
An alternative might be Plant/Emp, which gets it's core control power at L6. You could go with Strangler/Healing Aura at 1, Roots at 2 (or Heal Other), Super Speed at 4 (to get to missions safely but more importantly get you stealth to let you line up Seeds) and Seeds of Confusion at 6 and be useful on a team with your Blaster friends in almost no time. Just stay away from Nemesis, who resist Confuse.

All good suggestions... Seems I'm gonna have to decide what I'd enjoy playing more, since I'll probably get this guy to 50 anyway. Need more 50's now that I've (once again) unlocked all my slots.

So...used to playing a blaster, but wants to play a healer...
*ponders*
I know...Play a Corruptor - they're a decent hybridization of the two, and should give you what you need
as for powersets, that gets a little dicey, but I'm partial to /Therm myself...it's a decent hybridization itself of buff/heals, and pairs nicely with Fire for some thematic roastiness

Yes, I RP and play Redside on Virtue - No, Rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated
Do you suck at COH/COV? not yet...
