Help me find a corruptor I like

Since the day I heard about them, I liked the idea of corruptors. I've always loved blasters, and been annoyed by their squishiness. The idea of trading in my (largely useless) manipulation secondary for a nice support secondary to help keep me alive has always been attractive to me.

In practice though, I've never liked them for some reason. A lot of the support sets don't fit my playstyle well. I mostly play on medium to large teams, and constantly healing people or putting shields up on them bugs the crap out of me. I love kinetics (I've got a couple of /kin controllers) but I don't like playing up in melee with a corruptor. And every time I try to play one, every time I attack I keep saying to myself 'if this was a blaster, i'd be doing so much more damage'.

So I come to you, the forumites, with the hopes that someone can suggest something for me to try that I'd like. I WANT to like corruptors, I just don't seem to be able to. I want something that is near blaster levels of damage, but more survivable, and doesn't focus heavily on buffing or healing. Does such a thing exist?

Give Traps a twirl. Summon force field generator, drop your acid mortar and start shooting.

I would suggest Fire/Dark. You can do a little bit of everything and it has great damage.

The heal is awesome and it's targeted on you not the enemy like a Kin's heal so you won't "waste" it if the bad guy dies when you cast it.

You'll have decent -To hit when combined with Shadow Fall and a few other powers like Maneuvers, Weave and a Steadfast +3 can up your survivability.

Then there is Dark Fluffy. He might be brainless but he does come in handy, if for anything he can be your personal shadow meat shield.

You also get Tar Patch when combined with Rain of Fire, Fire Ball and Fire Breath = AoE goodness. The only drawback is those three sets have the most limited selection of IO recipes to choose from.

I almost forgot about Fearsome Stare... man I can go on and on about this combo...

Who do I have to *&^% around here to get more Targeted AoE recipes added?

You may not like to play this way but I'll give you the one tip that REALLY helped me fall in love with Corrupters.

Quit thinking of yourself as a team support player or an "upside down" defender. That's highly limiting to your role.

Think of your secondary as being there SOLELY for your own use. Fire/Dark....Tar Patch is there to hold the critters while you drop Rain of Fire and Fireballs on their heads. Ice/Time....TJ +softcapped defense is there so you can tank-n-spank by herding and dropping Ice Storm and Blizzard all by yourself. And your heals (if you have them) are there as YOUR heals first and foremost. No "Gather for AM!" or worrying about buffing individuals. You buff when the power helps you, or you have nothing else to do (which should be very, very rare if you follow the above advice).

Now by doing these things you ARE bringing assistance to the team in that stuff is dying faster and everyone is earning more xp at a faster rate. But you aren't the supporting cast with your secondary...they are there to make your killing more efficient and harder hitting. I do really selfish things (to a Defender mindset anyways) like skipping my buff other powers unless I have no other useful power choices. But I slot the heck out of the powers I do take for my own damage, defense and recharge efficiency which correspondingly helps the team by making me a better killer.

That change in mindset is liberating and for me made me LOVE the corrupter class. And you'll start slotting differently too, choosing powers not for their support utility but rather for their ability to strengthen your offense. And your teams will be totally shocked when they realize that YOU can tank, YOU can hold aggro and by sticking close to you their own defense and damage output is multiplied greatly. Its the perfect team scenario....by being your best solo, you are helping the team.

Sounds weird maybe but I suggest you try it. I've T4'd out more than 10 toons on Incarnate trials now, and 5 of those are Corrupters. Easily one of the most powerful toons in the game when built properly to maximize their OWN efficiency.

My current recommendations for power-gamer Corr builds are Fire/Dark (tried and tested) or Ice/Time (inexpensive IO slotting and you can cap defense to EVERYTHING and still retain 190%+ global recharge. Seriously.) With either build...you can Tank almost as good as a Tanker but with debuffing and your AOE's drop down death like a Fury-induced Brute or a suicidal blaster on crack.

I have no desire to play a support toon playstyle. Like I said, I can't stand buffing and healing, it bores the crap out of me. I want powers that debuff or buff myself. I don't mind skipping powers that can't benefit me, but I don't want to end up skipping half my secondary because the powers can't benefit me at all.

Edit: Dark sounds good, I've played it a little before on a mastermind, and I liked it. I'm not really familiar with what time brings to the table. Traps might be good too. My first character ever in this game was a fire/devices mastermind, and it would be fun to remake him, but less sucky.

Traps is one of my favorite sets but only because I tend to solo a lot. IMO teams nowadays run through mobs too fast to get real use out of Poison Trap and Acid Mortar, by the time you cast them the team may be on to the next mob. Either you will spend your time blasting or setting traps. If you run a lot of content solo then you can play at your own pace which makes Traps a more appealing set, to me at least.

You can't go wrong with Fire/Dark, you could even try Fire/Rad or if you're more into single target Sonic/Rad or Sonic/Dark to stack -res.

Another one that might fit your play style is Dark/Storm. I've got the Defender version and it's a lot of fun and very survivable with the tohit debuffs. Not to mention all the synergy. Freezing Rain + Tenebrous Tentacles, Thunderclap + Dark Pit + Tornado + Oppressive Gloom.

I would like to warmly recomend fire/dark as well.

I recently started one and it's just around level 30 so I'm certanly no expert but so far it's been insanely powerful, some points that have made me fall in love with the combo.

You get seriously awesome core powers very early, such as Tar Patch, Darkest Night and your fire AoEs as well as a complete single target chain. This means you will always kick butt, even if sometimes late in your career you decide to do a Posi 1.

It's highly aggressive support, you are awesome support for the team, but you mainly do it in the form of powerful debuffs that you'd also do if you were solo so I think it will really fit your playing style!

It's an awesome soloer, high damage all around, a powerful heal and massive debuffs.

If you like hover blasting it's perfect for it! I like putting wings on my characters so it's yay for me

I'd be curious to see that ice/time build.

I don't want to derail, but the way I read the first post you basically say you like the idea of a corruptor but hate corruptors and want to play one like it's not a corruptor.

I would think a Crab or Fortunata would be just what you're looking for. Defense, range, and easy no-hassle (but still significant) support through double leadership.

Faililng that, I second traps.
Drop FFGenerator and acid mortar then blast away.

...a scrapper?

If you mean ranged, though, some of the VEATs might be up your alley. I really like my Fire/Time corr, very strong all around, but it's not blaster-level damage.

Three threads down from yours. I borrowed one posted by Transient and improved on it....see my comments last post.

Soft capped defense or near it to everything and almost 200% recharge. Throw TJs high -ToHit into the defense and you are softcapped for iTrials as well. With Burnout I can easily farm +4/x8. Mezzers aren't an issue since my defense is so high I seldom get hit, but youve gotalice heals when the RNG comes calling. And play style is fast and furious. Even if you do get stunned, it's only going to drop one toggle and your set bonuses still protect you while you recover. Think I've died maybe five times total in 1-50 and I'm _always_ in tank mode and _always_ taking the alpha.

Carry blues until you can get Alpha Cardiac. Between Blizzard and your toggles, plus huge recharge giving you constant attacks, it is an end heavy build.

I've also got a fully IOd perma pet crab VEAT. Sorry.....doesn't even come close to Ice/Time (or Fire/Time which is also very good).

While this may sound the opposite of what you want, I find pain dom to be quite useful.

You have Soothing Aura, a constant low level heal which helps you and your team, but mostly you. You have world of pain, that is pretty easy to perma, boosts your damage and your res, as well as helping your team. You can take Share Pain, use it when needed on your team mate for a damage boost. Your rez also buffs your damage, recharge, etc and with Anguishing Cry, you get a big res/def debuff in an AoE.

Just taking the power you have to (Nullify, which also heals you), that is 6 powers which give you a fair bit of extra damage, you can help your team, buff res and do a bit of an AoE Debuff.

But yeah, sounds like you want a crab spider. If you want, i can hook you up with a nice build I've been working on for ranged damage, perma pets, everything.

For a high damage, low maintenance corrupter, I suggest fire or sonic primary and dark, rad, time, or traps secondary.

As most know, Fire has more damage as a secondary effect so it usually wins the damage wars. Sonic's secondary effect is -damage resistance and that translates into more follow up damage for you and any pets you might have (including teammates ).

Rad, Dark, Traps, and Time (with one exception) are all about buffing yourself and debuffing your enemies with the side benefit that all your nearby allies also benefit.

I think you would like any combination of those sets.

I've decided to give fire/time a try. Time looks quite nice on paper, hopefully it will translate into something I like in-game.

You won't be sorry with Fire/Time. Trust me, /Time plays even better in the game than it looks on paper. You will have to trust your defenses so you can make full use of TJ so play like a brute/scrapper once you've got yourself IO'd (usually start that around lvl 40). And once you have PowerBuildup, make sure you fire that off before Farsight. While Farsight itself will be perma if you followed the build I linked to, slotted the way I do its only good for about +14% defense to everything. But if you hit PowerBuildup first, it shoots it up to +22% to everything for the duration of Farsight...and since PowerBuildup is back up before Farsight runs out, that's your e-Ticket to fame and fortune.

Have fun!

I've got him up to level 10 so far, and I'm having fun. I kind of used your build as a basis, but I took it further with a bunch of purples. The build I'm going to try is below. I should be able to almost double stack farsight, which should keep me softcapped even for incarnate content.

I'll look at your build when I'm on my computer later, but sadly, you can't double-stack Farsight. That would be pretty game breaking if you could as double-stacked Powerboosted Farsight would net you almost 45% defense to everything just by itself. I'm pretty sure the bubblers out there would lose their minds if the devs allowed that happen.

That's why I just skipped slotting Purples into the build. Its really not necessary as 190%+ recharge without them pretty much assures you to have every power you need perma'd in the first place. That said, slot 'em if you got 'em....noticed you neglected to slot Blaze in your build above by the way...guess you put the Corrupter IO set in there?

Yeah, that's intended for the corruptor IO set.

And it's a bit misleading to say the build has 190% global recharge. That's including chrono shift, which is only up about a third of the time. That's why I wanted the extra recharge. I wanted perma-hasten without chronoshift.

??? Not misleading at all. Your comment confuses me a bit about chronoshift only being up "a third of the time." Are you neglecting to include the +50% recharge bonus that you get from Chronoshift itself? Many people don't realize exactly how Chronoshift works (and therefore undervalue the power and Time in general).

With 3 lvl 50 Recharge IO's in Chronoshift (how I slot it), you get recharge down on the power to 88.6 seconds.

The +Recovery and +Heal portions of the power last for 30 seconds. But the duration of the +50% Recharge lasts for a full 90 seconds. Since your recharge is down to 88.6 seconds, you've got it back up again before that recharge bonus expires (although activation time is 2+ seconds). I suspect your "only up a third of the time" is based on casually looking at Mids where it says that duration = 30 seconds perhaps? That's not the entire story (Mids often forgets to give the full story I've found). You can test this yourself in-game by just firing off the power with your stats window open and monitoring your recharge. 30 seconds after activation, your regen rate drops. But you'll see the +50% recharge bonus from CS stick around for the full 90 seconds.

Check out City of Data for more info on the power.

The build I gave you, the one I'm using, has near perma-Chronoshift at level 50 without any incarnates at all. Its got a 1.6 second gap. Hasten is better than perma as long as you are firing off Chronoshift almost as soon as its available again. I do and at that rate you are maintaining almost a constant +193.75% global recharge. Your build, with CS running, gets you over 200% global recharge and I guarantee you that CS will be perma as long a you remember to fire it off (you'll likely even have an overlap...which you can do with CS, although the +RCHGE portion of the power doesn't stack). Even if you forget to fire it off again, it doesn't take much before it and Hasten catch back up. Without Hasten and Chronoshift, I'm already at 73% global recharge (vs. you at 86%) just from set bonuses, which is enough for limiting Hasten to only a 12-14 second pause (8-12 for you)....and again, that's without purples at all. You should be even better.

Depending on your Incarnate selections, or in your case adding a couple of purple sets, you'll have Chronoshift way beyond perma. In fact, I'm about to start fiddling with IO boosters to see if I can drop Hasten and Chronoshift back down to 2 slots of recharge only.

Let me play with MIDS and I'll give you my updated build. And again...mines without purples (although I've been pondering throwing in an Unbreakable Constraint into Distortion Field). Your build, with purples, should be even better for Recharge.

Oh, wow. I had only looked at it in Mids, and there's nothing in there that says the recharge lasts beyond 30 seconds. That makes it considerably better than I thought it was. I may have to rethink whether I want to spend so much money on that build if it isn't necessary to get everything perma. Or at least take some of the slots out of things. With that up all the time I think I can get hasten perma with only one recharge slot in it.

Yeah, when compared to any other + Recharge self-buff available to a Corrupter, Chronoshift comes out on top. Only Speed Boost is better, and that's not a self boost.

There you go, the defense is much higher when I use my Clarion Destiny power before farsight. Pushes all the defense up past soft cap. The Apocalypse set is the ATO set, so this build is perma haste, perma chrono shift, and soft capped defenses with no 500 million IOs.

I took the fire build from earlier in the post. Removed the purples since it was discussed and they weren't really needed. I left the corruptor entrancement that is in the MIDS update because it wasn't horribly priced. 100 Mil for the entire set. I also dropped the ally buff in favor of maneuvers which pushed everything a bit above the soft cap instead of just below. This also gave me another place for a LoTG recharge.
