Anonymous Game Play?

Hiya gang,

Quick question:

Is there a way to play in a hidden or anonymous mode?

You know. . . sometimes you just want to log on and not have to be bothered by those folks in your friend lists and play solo.

Unfortunately, too many people get too butt hurt when you tell them you'd rather solo for a bit.

Thanks much.

Yep, just go into your friends tab and click the hide button, and check all those little bubbles. I'm not sure if the slash command still works, but it used to be /hide.

I think there's a "global hide" option under Menu -> Options -> General. I don't use it so I'm not sure exactly where it is.

This is correct. (And yes, the slash command is /hide. You can hide from specific things without using the toggle buttons, e.g. /hidesearch to hide from searches without affecting any other hide option.)

It does still work, I've used /hide recently.

/hideall is also a shortcut that enables all the hide options at once, hiding you from anyone and everyone. Some can still see you running around in a zone, but if they right click and invite or send a tell they'll just get a message that you're offline (which is obviously a lie at that point, but what can you do...)

Yes - it's my default mode for all of my toons.

As others have mentioned, the /hide command will pop up a box where you
can select options for it.

Some of my toons have all of them clicked, some have a few clicked, and
ALL of them have at least one of them clicked It works quite well.

You can also set your teaming status to decline invites as well.

Happy Soloing

Replaced.

And 99 times out of 100, if someone mentions they are getting the "you're hidden" message when talking to you when you are NOT hidden, going /hideall then /unhideall will quickly fix that.

Just like to point out that /hide isn't perfect. You can still be pestered by people that see you passing by if they click on your character, or if they see you speaking in one of the chat channels and click on your name.

I've gotten a few angry tells by inconsiderate people angry because not only was I on /hide, I also had my flag set to red "not accepting invites".

One buttmonkey even followed me to the mission I was doing demanding I accept his team invite and threatening to stay at the mission door until I came out.

It was so surreal I told my SGmates and after using my Base TP to leave the mission four of us gathered on the roof of the warehouse across from my mission and watched him standing there for 30 odd minutes laughing at him amongst ourselves. The whole time he kept sending me tells making demands and threats.

Easily solved by "Ignore as Spammer" or /petition Harrassment,
but yeah, you can still be seen, and if you're talking in broadcast, or a channel,
you can still be "detected", although that's a bit of a "PEBKAC" if you ask me...

That said, /hide is still pretty effective if you're not feeling particularly sociable.

Most players using /hide don't do it because they aren't feeling sociable. We use it to cut down on the harassment from the jerks who can't take "no" for an answer.

Sure we could spend our time online stopping every couple of minutes to use /ignore or /ignorespammer, or we could use /hide once and pretty much enjoy the rest of our time free of jerks.

You *did* read the OP, right???

So, if you're needing to use /ignore* frequently, I'm guessing anonymity isn't
the problem in *your* case...

The OP, on the other hand is trying to solve a much simpler issue.

Carry On.

I hide from searches because my answer to a pug invite will always be "no", but that has nothing to do with those people asking to pug being jerks or me not being sociable. It just prevents them from wasting their time and me wasting my time.

Regardless /hide is one of the most useful slash commands in the game, right alongside /stuck and /ah (imo, of course )

The GMs will ban you if you don't!

It's true, somebody on the Internet said so.

I wasn't responding to the OP in that post. I was speaking to you. That's why I use the quote feature. To let everyone know exactly who I was talking to, and exactly what that person said that I was responding to.

If you read the forums you'll see that people do this quite often.

Well, in my defense I didn't say "everyone" used it to avoid jerks. I left some out because they might have different reasons.

I've been told that in game and my current response is, "You're absolutely right, but I'm not required to team with you. Welcome to my ignore list."

I've been told that too. I tell them that when they send in the petition to make sure they spell my global name right so the wrong person doesn't get "banned".

lol - well, maybe you need to leave Atlas Park once in awhile.

I've been using /hide as the default for my toons since it went live and I don't seem
to encounter the issue you describe - Go Figure.

I suspect there's a correlation to be found there somewhere, but I'll leave it be...

PS> You didn't quote squat from me until after I quoted your "complaint" so you're
mistaken (or being intentionally disingenuous) from the get-go... Again, I suspect
a correlation.

I think far more people hide when feeing unsociable, not for harassment reasons.

People getting hassled every couple of minutes is the exception not rule in this game.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Where in my post did I give you the idea I was in Atlas Park when that happened? If you must know where I was, it was in Peregrine Island, one of the warehouses near the docks.

If I had to guess, it's probably because I'm a popular person where people avoid you. Of course I only have the frequency with which I get tells and blind invites while using /hide to go by so my data is incomplete.

First off I don't know how you construe a funny anecdote as a complaint. Maybe you didn't find it funny but I and my SGmates found the twits antics funny as hell.

Second what difference does it make that I responded to your post after you responded to mine? That is usually how conversations work here on planet Earth.

Oh and what am I mistaken or being disingenuous about? Do you think I'm mistaken that people have other reasons than sociability for using /hide? Or is it that you don't think I'm sincere in my belief that most people using /hide do so for reasons other than being less sociable?

If it's the former then I'll need more evidence than just your statement before I'll believe otherwise. My opinions are based on nearly 8 years of interacting with the other players in the game. If it's the latter, well, I won't lose any sleep if you doubt my sincerity about why people use /hide.

I'm going to take a (not so) wild guess and assume this isn't the case, simply because unless you've got a schizophrenic-like split personality thing going on the boards, you're a gigantic, bigotic and xenophobic pain in the *** whereas he seems like a decent guy.

It doesn't seem too much of a stretch to assume you are someone for whom popularity is an important thing, and that you made the whole story up just to pretend you're some kind of internet celebrity everyone cares about; and yet I bet we won't see a single person popping up in this thread vouching for this supposed reality.
