The market more inflated than ever?
Yes, you're missing the selling side of the equation. Sell your drops on the market and you'll soon have lots of inf to work with. There are lots of tricks to getting starting cash, and all of the old market techniques work perfectly fine to have you set for the life of your character.
The market is for both selling and buying. If you only buy there, you need another way of raising the inf to play there. If you're selling stuff, you'll quickly have enough inf to buy too if you want.
once you have a market egg, it's hard to keep from making inf.
that's part of why prices can go so high--so many people have so much inf.
sell to buy
buy to sell
skim some off the transaction in the meantime
oh
and
play the game
I've been out of the game for a good while, but was thinking about giving it another run. Ony thing is I see that costume contests are going as high as $100M! That got me thinking something along the lines of "if prices in the market are so inflated that $100M can be given away on a regular basis for a costume contest, how in the hell would I ever get my characters off the ground?!? (I probably have about $300M total...and I'm not the type to beg for cash).

With the big influx of reward merits, things like LotG +rech. and the numina proc right now are less than half the cost that they were last week. This will change, but for now, even this stuff is relatively cheap.
Huge amounts of surplus infl. are available to those who have figured out the economy, and have found ways to make bajillions. This makes a few items ridiculously expensive (like damage purples and pvp IO's), because there are people willing to spend this kind of infl. with their surplus.
How does this affect you? Well, mostly it doesn't.
Avoid thinking that purples are all that and a bag of chips. They aren't. They give you recharge. Your scrapper could care less, and if it's a big deal to him/her, then go after the spiritual Alpha slot. (What your scrapper wants is a set of gaussians, only one of which is is expensive.) Good, solid builds are not expensive.
If having infl. is important to you, figure out the economy and play the mini-game of becoming a bajillionaire. If that doesn't appeal to you, then enter those costume contests. Or, just buy good solid sets (recipes, and craft yourself) and stop worrying about people what other people have.
Or, to sum up, go play and have fun!

Anyway, if money is such a problem, you can do some of the following:
- Farm (missions or AE) for drops/tickets
- Farm alignment merits to buy highly desired recipes and sell them. Or just get random rolls
- Farm reward merits to convert them to a-merits (or just roll them, too)
- Play the market
Any of the above will get you steady money. Pick yours

And you can learn how to slot your characters to be awesome on the cheap, like I do.
I have an AV soloing Scrapper and a GM soloing Defender, and paid well below 2 billion for both builds combined. Compared to the 6-7 billion single builds I see on a daily basis, that's dirt cheap. If I'd bought everything fro the "buy it NAO!!!" price, I probably would have spent 3-4 billion per build, but I didn't. The majority of my expensive stuff was acquired with merits or Alignment merits. The spending sprees I went on were fueled by purple drops that I sold for anywhere from 100 mil to 600 mil.
If you're not in a hurry about it, you can build anything you like without having to do things in the game you don't enjoy.

Archie just resubbed after about eighteen months away from the game. He fired up his big marketeer's spreadsheet o' doom, and he was rather surprised to find that most of his old niches were selling at either about the same or lower than when he left.
While there are a few specific areas where prices have jumped, overall I don't see too much of a problem.

Death is part of my attack chain.
Another thing you can do is: if you know what you are going to want for your build, put in bids early. Recipes are usually cheaper, of course. If you have the luxury of time, you won't be pressured into bidding at "buy it nao!" prices. It'd be convenient if you have a personal SG with Base to safely store your purchases until the right time to use them. You can also store rare Salvage drops that you might need later.
Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

well see what happens is that you get these change purses so full of gold that they eventually break and...no wait, wrong game :-X
but really, some people earn inf so easy that they'll just plop down a bid that's rediculously high enough to guarantee it to succeed. Sometimes I get tired of trying to "figure out" what the numbers are on the other side of the equation and simply start stabbing higher until I get what I want.
That reminds me, I got a recipe drop (Respec) thats worth about a hundred million on a character a month or so ago. Huh. i wonder which alt I left it on?
A doctored wounds heal/recharge is 3 million. A performance shifter end mod/rech is 10 million. This is less than 1/3rd the cost they were last summer, when they were 10+ and 30+ respectively.

Im still trying to work the market but the lack of salvage is destroying my profits as i only work with one toon and only work the 10-15mill IOs. So the massive spike in salvage prices is killing me atm
Good job I have my AE farmer to falling back on in hard times.

[Union Chat]Damz: hey cyber, i am your naked pope for the evening, please confess to me my child
One other thing you're missing is that you don't need the expensive stuff. SOs still work, thanks.
Wanted: Origin centric story arcs.
If you've only played an AT once (one set combo) and "hate" it - don't give up. Roll a different combo. It may just be those sets not clicking for you.
