Now that Supergamble Packs are live, I eagerly anticipate the first complaint thread crying about how much more money someone has spent in relation to how much they had planned to spend. Brilliant.

The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.

I'd thank them for their eloquent service of providing me and other vets with more money for the devs to play around with to improve the game.

I'd also point and laugh behind their back.

Will not see me complaining about this. I ended up opening around 120 packs, and had a TON of fun doing it. No regrets on my end.

You could even say that you had a "whale" of a good time.

Costume packs are ten bucks. They always were. If you buy the super packs in bulk, they're .75 apiece. Which means, if you get all your costume pieces in under thirteen packs, you pay less for this costume set than ANY OTHER, and get free extra crap to boot. YMMV on the value of the free extra crap, but I'm sure there are plenty of people saying, "Crap, more stupid costume pieces? I wanted more merits!"

Not that I am aware of. Catalysts and converters, yes--but not Super Packs.

Aha someone posted a list of rewards from 24 packs in the other thread and there were a total of 6 xp boosts so I will not be making use of these.

And when you paid for them, you always got the costumes you expected and never random items you didn't necessarily want. And of course costume bundles these days on the Paragon Market are around 400 points, or five bucks.

And if you're unlucky, you pay more and instead have a lot of items you didn't necessarily want.

Really, it's that simple.

A. The pre-order arachnos helmets did not come after the justifications for Freedom of allowing players to only purchase what they want
B. The pre-order arachnos helmets were part of a straightforward sale of goods and not part of a scumbag gambling money grab.

AKA let me buy the costumes for set price. This really isn't a rocket science type argument that's its so hard to understand.

Some people don't want a CHANCE at a full set. They want to buy the full set out right, as we've been doing for the last smeging 7 years.

Eh, I don't really hate that the Black Wolf is super rare or that it might take the average person a few hundred packs to get it. I just don't like that there's no ultimate guarantee of EVER getting it.

It'd be nice to know if there was something in the code that said "if you've bought say 500 packs and still haven't gotten the Black Wolf, then your 501st pack will automatically give it to you". I wouldn't even mind if the Devs decided to keep that threshold number a secret just as long as they could tell us that something like that exists.

The uncertainty of possibly -never- getting it is what bothers me about it. *shrugs*

I can't disagree with that. But you can probably see how it is a deliberate pack incentive for income.

Ooh, I could see that. Like a hybridization of the costume pieces, just uniquely weighted. Hrm.

Yes, it will make them plenty of money. It is a very effective technique. You know what else is effective? Cold calling people and pressure selling them crap they don't need. "Listen up Gandma, go get your checkbook and write what I tell you."

If I'm allowed to hate the people who do that, I see no reason not to extend it to practices like this. Profitable doesn't automatically equate to acceptable.

Yet it's more than that. There's a psychological aspect behind the randomness that we've touched on in other threads about Super Pack: The Gathering. It's fundamentally different from all the other business models that Paragon Studios has implemented, whether before or after the launch of CoH Freedom. It's enough that some players don't want to do business with a company that displays such an attitude toward their customers.

I'm a little stingy on points, so I only bought 10 packs. Luckily, I got all of the elemental order pieces and 725 reward merits. Oh happy day. Oh and some tanker ATO I'll never use.

Oh I can see it, but what I find funny is that those that say they won't spend $1/80 points on a pack have said they WOULD spend 400-800 points on the set at once. Others have said they would buy the pack AND THEN try to buy some super packs just to try them.

surely that's money that Paragon Studios is leaving on the table?

I'm the same way with those little mystery lego people packs. Luckily, I can feel up those packs and guess what I'm getting.

But I'm just ranting.

I consider myself a simple man, I tend to only buy what I will use. While the Elemental Order pieces are VERY cool, I would only use 2-3 of the pieces (at least currently). The only other things from the packs in which I am interested are the ATO Enhancements, and those promise to be available via in-game methods eventually. Therefore, I will probably skip on these for a while.

Plus, as I play on a Mac, I can't spend more than a few seconds in the store at any one time. During Beta, by the time I was done hopping in the store, purchasing bulk packs, hopping out of the store, opening them all, and then repeating the process a few more times, I didn't care that I had received the full Elemental Order set plus some other good stuff! I had spent over a half hour of "gaming time" not actually playing the game.

Finally, I worry about the future, when they (most likely) add some more stuff to these packs, perhaps even another costume set, and the likelihood of rolling a full set of any one costume becomes diluted for someone like me, who is putting off purchasing these until their stipend has accumulated to a reasonable sum.

Long and short of it: I love the stuff they are offering (my compliments to the designers), but at the end of the day, if I am going to spend money on digital entertainment, something that exists outside of the physical world, it is going to be on something that I am guaranteed to enjoy.

@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.
