New Dark Astoria

I need another opinion on this, and maybe some intel. To me, some of the creatures in the new Dark Astoria look a lot like creatures from an artist named Wayne Barlowe. Did he collaborate? Am I getting this mixed with another artists work?

Since we're talking about something limited to VIP Beta, I'm not sure you can post pictures or discuss anything about it here.

Well actually, they're talking about beta stuff all over the boards so what do I know? Post away!

There's no NDA, so it isn't against the rules to mention things from beta here AFAIK, but presumably a thread exclusively discussing beta stuff should go in the beta forums.

Having just googled images from Wayne Barlowe (really like his style, by the way) I only see a connection in the broadest sense: a preference in demonic/alien creatures.

Personally I think the tyrannid/zerg connection is bigger.

I'm going to miss the old DA. It has an ambience like no other.

The problem with the old DA was you couldn't *see* the ambiance. It was entirely grey until you flew into the side of a building. It was possibly a good idea on paper but visually it made no sense.

It's kinda sad to say this but I'm not going to miss the old DA. It was a noble attempt but the idea that you enter a zone and look around and the entire world is just grey in every direction is just not good design.

Worked great for the Silent Hill series.

I imagine the idea behind the zone was similar. Fog is creepy when there are zombies milling around in it.

The bad design part was the fact that our characters travel at a significantly greater speed than walking.

No, the old DA was really cool, as long as you weren't trying to SJ or teleport across it. Especially the ghost people that would disappear as you got close, but I liked the fog too.

Like Claws said, it's the fast travel that messes it up.

From what I remember of the ustream broadcasts, not seeing WAS the ambiance. They actually said that the zone itself wasn't very interesting, and the extreme fog, disappearing citizens and low draw distance was pretty much all there was to it. In other words, the fact that you couldn't see anything covered up the fact that there wasn't a lot of interesting things to see.

I remember one period of time when the fog broke and DA was bright and sunny. Ignoring the cemetery, the rest of the zone reminded me of a mix of Steel buildings with KR's streets and bridges with a hints of old Atlas.

That's pretty much what it looks like now, only tinted red. I have to admit, I was hoping for something cooler that what we got. The cemetery area itself is nice, but honestly I think they'd be better off putting the fog back in the rest of the zone (if maybe a bit less dense) if they aren't going to do anything more interesting with it.

If they added the fog back, you couldn't see the red war walls or the stars, which imo are a big part of the current ambiance.

Also, I think they had to completely redo the lighting in the new DA, which is not trivial on a 3D map. As mentioned the old DA was actually sunny without the fog, whereas the new one is actually dark and has a lot of sparsely, and interestingly, lit places.

Wayne Barlowe is a longtime fantasy/sci-fi illustrator.

OP, I bought my copy of Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials back in 1979 when it was published, and it's been on my bookshelf ever since. I don't see any obvious similarities to his artwork and the new DA critters.

There appears to be some "Pitch Black" influence going on, imho.
