What Old Cartoon Would You Like In...

What else?

Although a regular DVD would be nice as the only thing available is bootleg stuff.

I think an issue with a lot of older anime is that it was drawn on cels, and those cels may no longer be around. Even if, I'm not sure if the cels were really that much higher resolution than the final product, but that's out of my area of expertise.

Personally, I didn't think the Yu Yu Hakusho clip above looked much better in HD than in SD. It looked a little bit recolored, but the actual resolution didn't look like it was any sharper than previously. A section that particularly stood out to me was the rose spinning, with petals separating. That looked ... I don't want to say pixelated, but I can't think of a better term, in both SD & HD. Additionally, a lot of those are action sequences, where it's harder to see a difference in resolution because of the blur of movement.

Depending on the source material, I imagine there's only so much you can do.

Just my 2c ;-).

Going with Freitag on this one. There's no noticeable difference in the actual quality of the animation itself, just retouched coloring. I don't get the point of "remastering" at all, seeing as how my regular DVD YuYu Hakusho episodes look juuuust fine.

(I have the entire series from when they did the first DVD release.)

Now, as Tenzhi said, it WOULD be nice if they'd release entire seasons on a single BluRay disc, making it cheaper and easier to get said shows. It's going to take me quite a while to collect One Piece at 13 episodes a pop, with over 500 episodes at this point...

I kind of have to agree with this. This applies to old TV shows and movies too. Some of the beautiful special effects associated with them was due to the more 'grainy' or less developed video content at the time, and was taken into account.

This falls into the same debate from over a decade ago about colorization of old black and white films. I saw a black and white version (though HD restored) version of "It's a Wonderful Life" over the holidays. The restoration sharpened the image, but in return made it look, for lack of a better term, fake.

I also imagine the digitized look of anime imported over to HD or Blu Ray devices carry the same results as Freitag pointed out. Some can look more spectacular, some can come off looking really... bad.

Much like the colorization debate (that I remember well) I suppose it really depends upon the source and how/why it should be done.

Some were meant to be silent films or black and white, and should never be changed because it would destroy the story the way it was intended. Others should be updated because the technology to tell the story properly at the time didn't exist. In either case, the original as-created should be made available as well for the purist who gets something out of it the futurist cannot appreciate.

That... is my 2c

I couldn't agree more.

You guys, I am disappoint. Nobody has mentioned Gargoyles yet? Given, I'd love to just see the rest of season 2 released (Forget the pile of garbage that was The Goliath Chronicles, I'll take the SLG comics anyday), but an HD version of the first two seasons would be fantastic.

Well, I'm sure that they're hoping fans will purchase the boxset in bluray to replace their DVD's.

This is all not to say that higher definition doesn't aid in animation. Evangelion's new films look fantastic, but you can tell it's not just a scale-up with some recoloring. Sky Crawlers, which is admittedly fairly recent, and can take advantage of much more modern HD technology, looked noticeably better even between 720p and 1080p, let alone 480p-720p. I think Ghost in the Shell translated fairly well into High Definition, as well.

I'd be interested in learning more about the remastering process from older, cel-based anime to modern HD formats. It seems like it would be something worth doing if possible. That being said, most things are only worth doing if you do them well.

From what I understand (which is very little to be honest ), all cel based animations, pre/early-2000, got recorded onto film. The cels don't really matter after that. That film can then be copied over and over (a master print or film negative I think it's called). A HD remaster can be made from this master film. Like in the case of Yuyu and DBZ and others. The DBZ blu-ray 1.1 has a 7 min or so feature that talks about remaster process. Never seen it though.

Sometimes blu-rays are just upscaled DVDs. Basically, DVD footage blown up to 1080. Several of FUNimation's releases are just that. Samurai Champloo, Claymore, OHSHC and others. They might look good, but not as good if they where done from a original film. But, arguably, still better than DVD even if upscaled by your own player. Unless that much of a improvement doesn't matter. As to why that happens... I'm not sure. I've heard a few times it's because those shows were done on a computer and were not cels/ on film. So they don't have the right resolution for HD (unless it was a movie). The shows were probably only made for standard def TV cause HDTV didn't exist then. Other reasons are Japan never gave them the right masters.

Anyhoots, it's all personal preference. I never owned YuYu Hakusho before, and now I do and it looks good on my 1080p monitor. Better than a DVD would.

And releasing a single season or series on a disc... from what I understand (very little ), do to DVD (and probably BD) video standards/specification, that's impossible. A DVD data disc, sure. But you need the right player and such in order to play it (they are cheap I think). You would also either have to make it yourself or get a bootleg. Again, do to standards. Maybe you can get more on a DVD video, but there would be a drop in quality. The most I've seen on a DVD is about 7 episodes.

One Piece... those are being re-released in 26 episode sets, but they have to be first released in 13. To make profit and such. Man, I can't wait for this summer. Season 4!

Let us not forget, Reboot. I would give anything to have that series on BluRay, running at 720, with some 5.1 DTS. PLEASE!!!

Not sure a HD makeover would work for JQ. Granted I have the DVD release of that set and it looks good. Then again, if a video remaster was done, maybe a audio remaster could be done as well (thinking of the OP in 5.1 Surround...).

Also...
So many titles already mentioned that would be interesting to see done. So many titles...

Thank you for the time...

Not so much HD, but I'd settle for a Remastered REASONABLY priced re-release of Star Blazers: Quest For Iscandar, The Comet Empire and The Bolar Wars.

Beyond Anime? My wants are a lil eccentric, The Mask Animated Series, a COMPLETE Darkwing Duck release and a Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys Release.
