Hopped on the Beta Server for a minute...

And noticed something I hadn't seen in the store previously. The Carnival of Light pack. It contains, from what I looked at:

3 Masks (Light, War, Vengeance) on Detail 2
4 Detail 1 items (used as mask embellishments)
2 Pairs of Boots (same boots, but one with a flared part going up)
1 Belt that looks very much like the Kheldian Sash that people have clamored over since Issue 3. Really, pre-Issue 3, during the lead-up FROM Issue 2 INTO Issue 3. I could be wrong (haven't looked at the Kheldian contacts in a while), but it seemed similar enough to me. Has the Jester pattern on it, but it isn't pre-tinted, so if you make both colors the same, the pattern vanishes.

These pieces are Female-specific, from what I observed. Then there are three maces that aren't (that I didn't get a chance to look at because this wasn't what I'd originally logged onto the beta server to check out )

Has there been an announcement about this one yet, or have I jumped someone's gun by posting this?

no you haven't jumped the gun, Kad. It's probably something that's coming to the market after the first of the year.

There's kind of a big thread about it in the beta forums.

Ah, and that would be why I haven't seen it. Because I've never actually gone to said forums

Yeah, they've been using the beta server to test new store items. In addition to the Carnie costume parts, the Super Packs, a coyote transformation travel power, and an alignment change token are also being tested.

Understandable, I never find the damn beta forums from the list unless there's a thread when I click on 'new posts'. Had to do a search just to find them. Anyway thread about this is here:

And the enhancement converters, ATOs, catalyst, Holiday Pack, and the New Years Pack.

Lotsa stuff on Beta.

And the Beta VIP server, which we couldn't get on, even if we were VIPs has now been renamed "Dev only - Get off our lawn!"

Did they really do this?

I'd get a good laugh out of it if they did.

Besides, it would stop some of the complaints and bug reports when people can't access it.

Guess I'll have to wait until I get home to check this out.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

It's easy to find the Beta forums. I think the problem is that you are going straight to the English section of the forums as many others do. The Beta forums listings are at the top level of the forums, not in the sections broken up by language.

For example, in the upper left of this page, under the links for OFFICIAL SITE and USER CP etc. is the breakdown for exactly where on the forums you are.

For example, while I'm on this page I see City of Heroes Forums > English > For Fun! > ALL ACCESS: City Life - CoH & CoV General Discussions > Hopped on the Beta Server for a minute...

Each of those labels that I bolded is a clickable link (in the upper left corner) that will take you to that exact part of the forums.

Clicking on English lets you see the English language sub-forums. Many people set that as the page they access since they don't need to see the German or French language sections.

But that keeps you from seeing the Beta forums sections. Those are at the same level as English, French and German.

If you click the City of Heroes Forums link in the upper left, it will take you to the top level of the forums and you'll see the Beta forums easily since they are listed first before English.

Knowing the sense of humor that some of the Dev team have, I wouldn't have put it past them to have actually done that.

Maybe one of them will read this and change the name to include it.

Working the beta boards/beta build is like working in college radio all over again. You know exactly what is going to be all the rage (or nerdrage) many months later.

The card game and Carnie Costume set were my current interests. These days, mostly just the card game.

Thanks Texas, you're right, I have this forum bookmarked but to go straight to the English section

That's what happens when players start insisting that the next costume pack for females had better be released without corsets.

Smug look on the Art Team's face when players realize it was due to their complaints? Priceless.

Doombox is what I always call The Radio villainside. That was one hell of a weird bug.

Also, I remember being shocked at how cheap boresights were a bit after Inventions came out. Forgot that it wasn't beta anymore.

It's more of an accessory pack.

It seems (clear to me, at least) that this pack was a very quick accessory pack to tide over the predominantly female playergroup that was offended by the gunslinger pack. None of the pieces seem to be blatantly pandering to the male playerbase, the masks, head details, sash, and boots are all AWESOME.

the maces are a nifty touch.

It's not really a costume pack, it's even labeled as "Carnival of Light costume pieces (FEMALE ONLY)".

Granted, some mouth breather is going to say "it's costume pieces, it's a pack" but it's really just 4 parts:
detail
mask
sash
boot
with options. A heck of a lot less than other packs. And that's if you accept the argument that "weapons aren't costume pieces and don't count."

When this hits live, you can expect a lot of complaints from the same people that said it wasn't a big deal when the gunslinger pack came out.

Which is really weird because when they were asking us about the upcoming sci-fi retro pack, the biggest suggestion I made was to go ahead and release smaller packs of costume parts and to make them gender exclusive rather than attempting to appease both groups at the same time with rehashed stuff. I know that people will get upset with perceived "missing" costume content, but it allows the art team the opportunity to experiment more, and I'm confident it will actually lead to better new stuff.

I seriously didn't expect something to already be in the pipeline.

That would be an impossibility.

In order for these pieces to be ready to given to the players, they would have had to been made months before that brouhaha. In fact, they were made for First Ward.

These pieces represent the fact that the Devs are coming through on their promise made 2 years ago to make NPC costumes that can be ported to PCs. In fact, the newer NPCs simply seem to be PC rigs now outrigged with PC pieces and some extras reserved to the Devs. The IDF and CoT and CoL were (re)designed with giving those pieces to the players.

Unfortunately, some of those pieces are so custom designed for that group that they get reserved from players because of clipping issues... which really don't come to light until you try to use them on PC with their scales changed.
