That's been consistent from what I've seen of late. I only have to log in at home or work after about 8 hours of being inactive.

Now, if I close the browser and open it back up, I'm logged out and Remember Me doesn't Remember Me. Luckily, I have some addons that remember form data. It's rather quick to get logged in.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Z, I find that fingernails actually deter motivation. If said manager doesn't have good news by next meeting, I suggest you start removing his/her fingernails with a pair of pliers. Trust me, you will see an INSTANT increase in motivation.

Note: Does not appear to work on cats.

Zworiginalpancakehouse's pliers aren't long enough to reach to Seattle and have the accuracy to get the right persons fingernails.

Last I understood, the analysis from the outside was that we weren't actually being 'logged out', the cookie that holds session info is being actively deleted. But if the cookie is manually re-inserted, the session continues just fine.

It's those spurious 'delete cookie' instructions from the server that's the problem.

Apologies. I read "maintenance," took it in good faith and assumed in-game maintenance.

I still want the Helper/Help Me! colours removed, however.

Seriously? That still means I've got to log in every single day. I could accept 24 hours but honestly this is the only website I know that has an 8 hour expiry time on cookies.

Nah, I wouldn't ask you to not comment even if I could. I've just stopped seeing it as a joking matter, it's been way too bleedin' long for funny.

You can have my name in gold but do we still get to keep our forum titles? I lost my unique title when the EU and NA forums merged but some people have worked hard to gain those titles and it would be a shame to see them replaced with a generic 'VIP'.

I certainly don't feel like a VIP these days so I'd rather remain as a Legend thanks.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I didn't use the Gold name before because it would have meant changing my forum title and I really didn't like the thought if being simply "VIP".

I'm not really sure what mine is currently, but I'd rather have it than "VIP".

EDIT: Ah, Renowned. I'll stick with that thank you very much.

Sounds like the load sharing issue, not the cookie issue

Yeah, that's a little weird. Most websites I visit have an expiration time measured in days or even months. I wonder why they want such a short time on it, it's not like it uses server resources to have a cookie on our computers.

Apparently there is some issue with vBulletin nd how they have it set up here *shrug*

I've it set to show me as VIP and I have my title (Forum Cartel)

I hear you, and I understand what you're saying, but to play devil's advocate; we also tie your forum account to your game account, which is why we want to err on the side of security in this case.

I was wondering as to the motivation.

But to play devil's advocate to your devil's advocate...

Is retyping my account password every 8 hours into a browser that could possibly be compromised by malware and re-sending it across the network more or less secure than using a cookie with an ID token to keep me logged in forever?

If somebody steals my session, what's the worst they can do? Troll the forums and get me banned? Copy my characters to the test server?

It's a fair point but on the other hand once a computer is logged into the forums the only thing that does is grant forum access. If I want to make actual account changes I have to log into the NCSoft site whether I'm logged into the forums or not. Someone getting access to the forums can't actually do any harm to my game account; I guess they could get me banned from the forums but they can't do anything involving actual money.

You guys are right, there's a bit of back and forth there as well. Point is, I made all of these arguments to our Web Security/Web team and a compromise and decision had to be come to.

In my eyes, it's not ideal, personally I'd prefer it so that you had to log in once a week at most, but it's not as extreme as some other MMO Communities impose on their players.

Well at least it's not an ego issue. I kid. Thursday is D-Day. I hope all this forum-issues nonsense can be put behind us after that maintenance.

I totally understand and absolutely agree here. Of course I take security very seriously... I have firefox set to be in permanent private browsing mode. I don't want anything to be saved in temp files.. if I want it saved I'll bookmark it. And I have a separate password for every site I log in to, so while I know remembering several dozen passwords can be difficult, I just don't trust anything. Look at how many sites have been hacked (Steam, Sony, etc). And who knows, someone at some company you do business with may not be so honest, and may use your email address and password to try to log into as many sites as they can think of. Why risk it? So you can save a few seconds entering your credentials?

While I understand wanting the cookie bug fixed, the idea of permanent login just boggles my mind.

So I have to log in once in the morning and once in the evening or, in other words, every single time I visit the forums. *sigh*

The COH forums are not Fort Knox. They're not my bank account. They're not even Twitter or Facebook. Why can't the cookies be set to expire every 30 days like a more normal website?

As it is, every single time I visit the COH forums I think "Oh crap, not this again. When are the gonna fix this !@#$% bug?!?" That's probably not the takeaway your marketing group wants for VIPs to have while visiting the web site.

^ It's even worse if you access from multiple locations like me. I have my home PC, my work PC, my many smartphones and several tablet PC's. I have to relogin every time on each one, and some of them I have to login 3 - 6 times in a row before it will actually stick... Until I post and it unsticks again...

It's garbage... My 11 year old could setup forums better, and that's no exaggeration.

But it's hooked to your game account. Which may or may not have a credit card hooked up to it. Which may or may not be a debit card directly hooked into your bank account.

Do you REALLY want to accidentally grant some scumbag unfettered access to your account for 30 days? Note, the cookie would still work for them even if you changed your account password can.
