VIP to Premium: retained unlocked slots

I subscribed and played CoH for years, then didn't play for a couple of years. When I launched f2p, I installed and started playing again as a free account. I then decided to subscribe and am now playing VIP. If/when I return to Premium, will character slots I unlocked while VIP still be unlocked, or lock again and require me to unlock a reduced number?

Thanks!

you will not lose any slots that you bought or earned

so if you got 2 from being 2 year vet, bought 5, and had GR before freedom release (another 2 slots) you would keep all of those in addition to the 2 free slots which are given to all players (free players start with 2 total character slots)

so as a returning player with (my example) you would have the 2 global slots, then 2+5+2 for a total of 11 slots (note: this is based off of the example i gave and i have no idea how many slots you would actually have)

you wont have as many slots as a VIP but you can still have a good number of slots as a returning player

Think he means: he went from Premium, to VIP, and now back to Premium. Will the exact same slots he unlocked as a premium the first time still be the unlocked slots for the second period as a premium, or will he get to pick new slots to unlock?

Personally, I don't know. Good question for someone who has done it, or for Zwill to answer.

To follow up a little further on what Necrotech said, those slots are NOT per server--that's how many you get, total. You can use them on any server or combination of servers except for the Exalted server, which is VIP only.

I'd love to know the answer to this. If you're a Preem does going ViP for a month allow you to reset which characters are unlocked?

The response I got from customer support said that any slots unlocked remain on the server they were unlocked on. You can't move them.

This contradicts the response on the last Facebook Friday, but I was told that the community team will be informed of the "correct" response soon.

I have to assume that within the same server the answer is "yes". If you unlocked the slot on Freedom, assign it to a character, go VIP for a month, you can then assign the slot to another character on Freedom when you go Premium again.

Thanks for the replies. Some new info for me and some not. I do understand that as a Premium player, slots I unlock stay on the server in which they are unlocked.

Further explanation...if I unlock more slots in my current VIP mode than I am allowed when I return to Premium, what happens?

In subscription mode, prior to f2p, I had a good many characters spread over four servers. I also have a second account for my wife with fewer characters over the same four servers. A few days ago I chose to pay for both to revert to VIP so I could go in and review each character, and transfer any inf and goodies from those I am willing to delete to those I will keep. I did this using two computers with both accounts open on the same servers so I could pass stuff and eventually accumulate it on characters I will keep. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. I couldn't quite get down to the number of slots I was allowed as Premium - 7 global on one account and 4 on the other.

So, I'm faced with having to further reduce the number of characters before returning to Premium. That's really hard...do I delete my only lvl 50 because I don't play that character much?

My original question was intended as follows. If, while I am VIP, I unlock 10 slots on Virtue, for example, when I then revert to Premium, will all slots be locked, so that I will need to unlock only the 7 global I am allowed as a Premium player, or, will all 10 be unlocked since I unlocked them while VIP? The wording in the "Side-by-Side Comparison" chart seems a little ambiguous.

I suspect this is wishful thinking! I'd have to assume that NCSoft isn't that generous, and that as a Premium player, I would not have more than the 7 global unlocks when I revert to VIP, but thought it was worth asking the question.

Thanks!

Here I'm pretty sure that if you added 10 slots to Virtue as a VIP, you get to pick which 10 additional slots are unlocked on Virtue as a Premium.

I'm a little unclear as to what you mean by 7 that you are allowed. You should have spent your slots as a Premium and unlocked some toons for free-to-play already the first time. Worst case, those same characters are unlocked still. Best case, you still have 7 slots on Virtue, but you get to rechoose them.

We're almost sure you can't move those 7 slots (or the 10 you bought) to another server. I don't think this is what you're asking, just covering our answer-bases.

I'd assume it's no. The database stores those values (which slots are unlocked) in permanent storage so f2p can access them. I'd bet those values are not erased just because you went vip. VIP unlocks and Premium unlocks are two different things. See my "worst case" answer above.

Exactly. Help! Z-Man! We need you!

I'll take a quick stab at this.

First off, the characters will not be deleted unless you delete them. They will just be in a locked state initially.

You don't need to delete the characters.

Each server is capable of holding up to 48 characters. As a premium player you can unlock up to 36 character slots on a server (except Exalted).
------------
To answer your rephrased question:
When you are a VIP you buy slots and apply them to a server, you keep the slots on that server. The first time you log into Virtue as a premium, all your characters will be initially locked and you will have 10 server slots.

I'm not sure where you are getting the 7 global number from. However, let me guess:
+2 slots from when the extra slots were introduced.
+2 slots from Going Rogue before Issue 21.
+1 slots from Veteran Rewards.
+2 Global Slots.

If you had previously assigned those slots to a server, they STAY on that server, even if you unsubscribe.

If you bought 10 more slots and applied them to Virtue and you applied the slots I've guessed you have had from before to Virtue, then you would have 17 character slots available on Virtue when you revert to premium. However all your characters on Virtue will be initially locked. You can then unlock them by assigning them to a server slot. This does not cost any money. To change characters assigned to a slot, you have to subscribe for a month, then unlock the different characters you want to assign those slots after your subscription lapses.
------------
Subscribers can unlock up to 48 character slots on a server. If they've unlocked 36 slots on a single server, they would lose access (but the characters will not be deleted/lost) to 12 characters. By subscribing again for a month, they gain access to all their characters again. At the end of that month, they can still choose to unlock any 36 of the 48 characters.

Slots, yes, characters no.

Here is an snippet of a reply I got:
Quote:
When a Global Slot is spent on a server, it belongs to that server. It can be used again in the future to unlock characters who are on that server should your account go Premium. But it can not be exchanged for a Global Slot to be used on another server.
The slots are the key, not the characters.

Yes, please read this. OP, deleteing characters gives you nothing. You don't get to rechoose the slot. You just have an empty slot.

Agree it's slots, not characters. Deleting a character won't give the OP anything back. I'm not sure that your quote is relevant, since it applies to the first time a player goes premium, not the second. I think I'd still prefer to get official clarification before saying one way or the other.

Thanks all!

Very confusing!

My reason for deleting characters was mainly to clean up too many that I started just to try different types way back when I originally subscribed. I played some up high enough that I wanted to to reclaim inf and goodies, so had to unlock them to do that. Once that was done, I no longer needed them, so deleted them. I hope that deleting them left the slot available to create a new character.

Thanks again! I guess sometime in the next few weeks I'll revert to Premium and will see what happens, and report back.

This isn't entirely true.
My sub ran out last night and I took a look before I resubbed.
I had a total of 9 character slots available to me. I have bought 5 so I am thinking 2 from GR, 5 character slots and 2 freebies. I don't think you get to keep the veteran slots.

I definitely kept my vet slots. I had them all assigned to Virtue prior, and was premium at launch of Freedom. I had 24 server slots for Virtue (I had a combination of purchased/vet slots assigned to Virtue for the then-max of 36) and extras sitting around.

  • A player will receive one additional token for every cumulative 12 months of total paid subscription time
  • A player will reveive two additional tokens if they were subscribed during the release of Issue 12
  • A player will receive two additional tokens if they purchased Going Rogue before City of Heroes Freedom's release
  • A player will receive one additional token per character slot purchased, before or after Freedom's release

Is what we were told. If this doesn't match, bug/submit a support ticket.

Just a clarification question:
Do you know that you can email items and Inf to yourself and others now? You just email to your @global name and then you can pick it up with any of your characters.

Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

Please don't confuse character slots with tokens.

To add to the above correction though:
If those slots are or have been assigned to a server, those assigned slots will remain on that server.

+2 Global character slots for being a Premium.

Recommendation - send yourself an empty email first, then reply to that to make sure it goes to you.
