CoH nomenclature and F2Ps
Just let it go.
They are only words and as long as you understand them it is fine. Keep using your own terminology and eventually it will catch on, there is no real need to educate them.
I'd bet CoH wasn't the first mmo of a significant number of players (myself included) before Freedom, this isn't something new. People will adapt, it just takes time.
Correcting people's terminology just seems obnoxious.
Well I try to not come across as obnoxious, and I don't criticise. But sometimes it can be confusing, and perhaps habits caight early are easier to amend. I didn't call Quests Missions when I tried WoW. How far would you let it go?
'where do I pay my guild rent?'
'which class has the best skills and how to I mail gold to myself?'

Got to agree with Giant on this one.
Don't be obnoxious about things, but use CoH terminology when you're responding:
'Can sb help me with this quest?' Speed Boost can help your team with most missions, yes. (Edit: or was that the annoying shorthand for 'somebody'? If it was, change my answer to "I'll help with that mission for you")
'How do I pick a new skill' You get new powers by visiting the trainer.
'need some advice on what spell to choose next' What are the powers you can choose?
'sewer raid forming' I'll take a spot on that Sewer Trial.
'Enhancements - that's gear, right?' Kind of. They improve the power they're slotted into, not your whole character. They're literally an enhancement to the power. (Edit: I'd also expand on this a bit if I were responding, by saying that Enhancements work more like skill levels, where each slot represents a level of skill, but you get to pick and choose what bonus each skill level adds to the power by slotting different Enhancements into them, but I like to give full and complete answers.)

This is a song about a super hero named Tony. Its called Tony's theme.

Another quite common one is calling every map a dungeon - although that's ok if it's an Oranbega map

Its is considered rude to correct people in front of others. However, you can try to curb their usage of certain words by responding with the correct terminology used by CoH players.
New player: What spell should I choose next?
Veteran player: Your next power selection will depend on you blahblahblah
New player: Where do I obtain quests?
Veteran player: Missions are obtained via contacts thatblahblahblah
Yeah, I'd have to say enforcing the correct terminology yourself seems to be the best and most polite way to get the point across. At some point they'll realise they're using the wrong game-specific terminology and adapt to the actual ones used in game.
Though in the case of confusing enhancements with gear, that would be deemed appropriate to 'educate' new players because enhancements simply do not work the way armour and gear works in other MMOs. Leaving it be could lead to letdowns or confusion.

... What do we think about this subject? |
And after 7 years, there are still some people who call a group of "MOBs" a "mob", so don't count on ever being able to have correct terminology.
I refer to a group of baddies as a 'mob.' Because, well they are a 'mob' of enemies. Has nothing to do with the original acronym. T

Personally, I think using the word "mob" to refer to an enemy is weird. It's actually an old programming term. It doesn't just break immersion in the game, but it's not like we refer to polygons, textures, 2D overlays, etc. in the game for other things. "Mob" is just confusing to people who are relatively new. It also doesn't help that in layman's terms, "mob" refers to a group of people while in programming, a "mob" represents just one entity.
Personally, I use the word "enemy" for any generic NPC you can battle, and "enemy group" or "enemies" for a group of them.
As for the OP, there's nothing wrong with correcting people, but try to be tactful about it. "Where do I get new spells?" "You need to see a trainer. In Atlas Park, Ms. Liberty is where you increase your level and get new powers. As as side note, in City of Heroes it's 'powers,' not 'spells.'"
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
When I hear the word 'mob' or 'mobs' in regards to enemy spawns. I consider a mob to be one spawn of enemies while mobs to be a number of enemy spawns. After all, even the gangsters in real life were just called 'the mob', pluralising that must be as weird as some people think calling an enemy a mob would be here.
As for the example regarding spells, while powers is the correct term, it's entirely possible the person in question is just really into character accuracy and the character in question was magic origin! Portraying fire blast or ice blast as fire or ice spells does sound pretty thematic outside game mechanics.

New players coming into the game need to learn the correct terms for everything. It makes it easier for them to get into teams (not groups), Supergroups (not guilds), and Trials and Taskforces (not raids). I don't see the problem with correcting them if they don't know what exactly they are asking for or about.
The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. I've noticed a lot of freebs using the 'wrong' terminology in game, usually in Help:
'Can sb help me with this quest?'
'How do I pick a new skill'
'need some advice on what spell to choose next'
'sewer raid forming'
'Enhancements - that's gear, right?'
And similar.
Personally, I always try to (politely and with a smiley) correct what I see as bad habits. It seems to be WoW refugees using terms they're familiar with.
What do we think about this subject? Should we let it go, maybe widen the terms we use to be more inclusive? Or continue to 'educate' and maintain CoH's differences?
Whenever I see 'quest' I think of Frodo trudging through Mordor, personally, but maybe I'm just being a stick-in-the-mud.
