10 Things to do with returning heroes!

This week a couple old friends returned to the game to see what's new. It was exciting to see them back and team up, but I totally blanked out on what do with them!

It seems much of my playstyle these days requires VIP status or licenses that Preemies would have to purchase. So what can I play with a Preemie that doesn't want to spend extra $$ to play?

With a bit of brainstorming, I figured out some fun, free activities. And in the interest of helping others who may be facing this dilemma, here's the list:

  1. Tips (how to find 'em & set 'em...EDIT: but apparently not Morality Mishes & Hero Merits)
  2. Death From Below Sewer Trial (fun for ALL levels & how to use the LFG tab!)
  3. Revamped Positron TFs (Dopplegangers & Dr. V FTW!)
  4. Keith Nance arc (more Doppleganger fun)
  5. Sutter TF (action, action, action!)
  6. Dr. Khan TF (something new for high level friends)
  7. Revamped Maria Jenkins arc (hello Praetorians & pretty maps!)
  8. Twinshot arcs (if they roll up a new alt with one of their few slot tokens)
  9. ADDED Mothership Raid
  10. ADDED Hammi Raid

Removed:
  1. Signature Storylines (apparently not piggyback-able)
  2. First Ward (apparently not open without purchase)

Anything else you'd add?

I believe Morality Missions will not drop unless you purchase the Alignment System.

This requires a purchase of the First Ward Zone Pack.

If a preemie hasn't purchased the content, they can't even join teams doing the content. This includes Morality Missions, Praetoria, First Ward, SSA, Incarnate-stuff (i.e. Mender Ramiel; can't even be purchased), and any future purchasable content.

Both Signature Story Arcs and the First Ward require either a specific purchase or a running subscription.

I have a friend of mine who's playing the game for the first time in a LOOONG while, and most of the things he likes and the things we end up doing together are the things I did back in 2004-2005. He hated the new Atlas Park since he never reads his briefings and the zone lags LIKE HELL on my laptop that he's using, so the first thing we did was run away to Kings Row as fast as we could. The guy kept telling me how good the City looked while looking at places like Kings Row, Skyway City and Faultline.

I'm really not making a point, just sharing my experience with the one guy I managed to convince to try the game for free.

Freemiums can participate in the Seed of Hamidon event in First Ward, but not the arcs unless purchased a la mode.

I would think that for those not too interested in reading mission info that the normal path would be:

  1. Death From Below
  2. At level 8 go to Kings Row for Radio Mission and the Safeguard for the Fly Pack.
  3. More Death From Below until 14, then Posi I and II
  4. At level 18, Faultline for the two 15-29 arcs.
  5. At 20, a lot of options open up

I hope this is a policy that Paragon will change in the future. If a preem buys content he should be able to invite his preebie friends along with him.

That wouldn't be good financial sense

Huh...

The top ten list of tings to do with returning heroes I made was completely different...

It also violated the teen rating on five separate occassions...

Go figure.

Why would anyone buy the SSA content if they can just piggyback on someone's else's mission and get all the benefits of it for free?

What I've said I wan't to see, is for VIP players to get Guest Passes every so often, with the ability to buy more on the market. Let's say a VIP player Gets 3 guest passes a month. They can invite three Free/Premium friends to run through a SSA branch, or one of the First ward story arcs. Something the Free/Premium player wouldn't normally get to see, and even then just a part of it. With the hope of enticing them to subscribe so they can run the content without restriction.

It would likely be a good deal of work to implement correctly, but I do think it would help with the stated goal of giving the Free/premium a taste of a game in the hopes that they subscribe.

Guess I'll have to swap Sig Story Arcs and First Ward with Mothership, and Hammi Raids

On the Morality Mishes from Tip drops: Morality Mishes still drop for the Hero Merit, don't they? It's just the alignment shift that isn't an option?

On the other hand, another model has had success selling one-time 'guest passes' to content. It'll be interesting to see if CoH follows suit.

I don't think giving them away for free is a good idea. Selling them on the market, yes. Free? That's giving away too much. Maybe as one of the repeatable Tier 9's.

No. Morality Missions do not drop for a Preemie, and others' Morality Missions cannot be joined by a Preemie.

Well, at least they can run thru the regular tips. They'll just have to drop whenever a Morality pops up. That's kinda lame, tho.

Those SSA rewards could be locked behind a subscription or license instead of locking preems out by not even letting them join the team. Who cares if preems piggyback on SSAs if they aren't getting any rewards.

If someone buys First Ward they should be able to invite their friends along.

First Ward I agree with, but not the SSAs.

Well, if they locked out all rewards except drops, then sure. But the SSA has bonus XP and inf gains that are ridiculous. The last boss/mission combo gave me like three bars of XP, if not more.

Not really much point a Premium player doing Mothership Raid unless they have completed tier 4 so they can actually gain Vanguard merits.

I find there is far too much lag to have fun on a mothership raid (or any other large scale coX zone event).

I've always found Mothership Raids fun at all levels, esp with the new league ability.

The best suggestion for the first thing to show returning players is the Death From Below arc. It's a revision of something they've probably done (sewer teams), which is the reason it was the first thing I tried with my friend (though we ran into a road block when I didn't realize the LFG tab had been bisected by a recent patch).

Another friend came back, and we just did an LGTF then a Statesman TF. He couldn't remember if he had done either, so... I don't know how much he got out of it. He did ask about the Incarnate stuff though, which I guess is the point of displaying the reward that they can't claim.

Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.
