Please, compare psi/mental blasting and mind/psi dominating

I've been a fan of psychic heroes forever, or at least since well before Jean Grey became Phoenix and when Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad were newlyweds. Recently I've been having a, er, blast with the blaster version of the concept, thanks in large measure to Ordius' great guide to the topic. I've been thinking about trying out the dominator counterpart, and am interested in folks' experiences.

Assume here that I do know about the problems with Carnies, Rikti robots, and such.

How fast is the dominator version in overall speed, when compared to the blaster? How long does it take to build up a good roster of powers for an attack chain? How much more or less endurance-heavy? Any particular strengths and/or weaknesses that might surprise me if I didn't have you nice folks tipping me off?

I'll leave the comparison up to others since I haven't played those Blaster sets yet and the last time I played a Mind/Psi Domi was before the changes.

I just wanted to point out that a Fortunata may be worth considering as well (assuming you have access to VEATs). It probably falls somewhere between the other two, has pretty nice damage, plenty of control and with all the defensive buffs it's very survivable.

I do have one, actually. Just haven't really gotten much into him (and did stick with it long enough for the respec and actual fortunate powers) - I should take another run, maybe.

Ah ok, I just suggested it since the playstyle is similar and they get overlooked sometimes.

Mind/Psi is a very different beast. It is IMO much stronger then a Psi/mental blaster. You have way more lockdown tools and drain psyche on a dom is much stronger. Psi Assault still has a very good T9, not as abusingly good as before but still dam good.

Some enemies might make you cringe but on a dom you have the safety net of being able to lockdown and survive spawns that might make a blaster dead.

Fortunatas are even more powerful (IMO). They get a mag 4 stun! That will take a boss out of the fight and best part is it will always be mag 4, unlock domination boosted mez powers. Their hold does more damage then most single target blaster attacks. Their leadership secondary powers are mighty. Seriously Forts are like a dom on steroids. You get a good aoe dart attack that has some nice but small -regen and the single target dart as well. You also get psi-nado and a whole host of other fun powers to build as you wish. Solid damage, great lock down power, and great buffs.

Doms get the benefit of having double mag mez tho. Which may or may not tip the scales in your eyes.

OK, you two have convinced me to take fortunata Montressor out for another spin.

I'd lean toward the Dom, personally, but I say roll both and have fun with them. The Blaster will do more damage, especially single-target damage. The Dom will still do a ton of damage, but will be MUCH safer, with controls and Domination helping out a lot there. Fear and Confuse are two of the best mezzes in the game and Mind can throw both, plus a few holds and a couple sleeps, one of which is 3.5mag.

Another point of interest is that the Fortunata version of Psychic Wail does NOT have a crash. However, I believe it does less damage than the blaster nuke, and slightly less than the defender nuke, and has the same recharge time.

One is awesome, lots of crowd control, but crappy archetype inherent.

One is more damage, not so much crowd control, but awesome archetype inherent.

The game ends at 50. Smilegasm
Do not ever give Mind Control a pet. We need more control sets without pets.
My characters are not "toons". They are all project characters, though.

Domination? Crappy? Ahh... right then.

@Draeth Darkstar
Virtue [Heroes, Roleplay], Freedom [Villains], Exalted [All Sides, Roleplay]
Code:
I24 Proc Chance = (Enhanced Recharge + Activation Time) * (Current PPM * 1.25) / 60*(1 + .75*(.15*Radius - 0.011*Radius*(360-Arc)/30))
Single Target Radius = 0. AoE Non-Cone Arc = 360.

The version of Psi not yet mentioned is the recently proliferated version to Corruptors, which I now consider the "representative" version of Psi Blast for standard ATs, since the Blaster version is so disappointing. It lacks Aim but gets an extra 20ft range on most of its powers. With incarnate powers its possible to work up an entire attack chain usable as far as 120-140ft away (the snipe can be used from about 230 ft away). I'm a big fan of Psi/Time and Psi/Dark personally although lots of options could work.

Domination is full of major league WIN !!!!

The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.

If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

While I agree in general, I don't find it helpful to lobby for a set based on what it is possible to do when incarnated out. For 1, that's a fair amount of playtime when it's irrelevant. For 2, almost everything is capable of everything when fully incarnated out.

The Dom is quite fast.

Not long at all.

It is very end heavy, but Drain Psyche and Domination make that almost irrelevant.

I find the Dom version to be stupid tough, *IF* you don;t make a mistake. If you forget something, it seems to be very unforgiving. But, blasters in general are pretty unforgiving too.

In general I'd say, Doms safer, by a large margin, and able to handle more, but blasters being very much better at single targets, especially single hard targets.

It might come down to IOs. Doms will be slotting a few purple sets taht are cheap, while the blaster version will be after the most costly sets... My opinion, and YMMV.

Good luck.

Sorry, I'm not "lobbying," I'm stating a fact. Psi Blast has longer range blasts than other sets. It starts at 100ft. Other sets are not capable of reaching the same range, even when incarnated, in part because many of them have only a 40ft base range on their Tier 3 attacks. And I think plenty of people would disagree that considerations of what a set will look like at the incarnate stage is completely irrelevant.

OK. Fair enough. Let me rephrase. I'd leave the the discussions of what is within the realm of possibility with incarnate powers set aside, unless someone specifically asks about end game potential.

That said, your mention of the range is a very, very valid one, especially for a lot of play styles.

And I never said it was *completely* irrelevant. I said that considerations on Incarnate ability were "a fair amount of playtime when it's irrelevant." I think most people would consider 1-50 a fair amount of play time.

Edit: I have been known to get bombastic, so I even triple checked what I said.. And I can't find anyplace where I said it was completely irrelevant. If I did make such a stupid claim, I retract it, and admit to making such a claim out of a desire for bombast.. Obviously, depending on your enjoyment of the incarnate content, incarnate considerations are not irrelevan. But they are universally irrelevant prior to hitting lvl 50.

Thanks to the folks who encouraged me to try both. I find them both a lot of fun, and scratching somewhat different itches. The blaster is faster on single targets, the dominator kind of fiddly (I'm not wild about Domination) but great at the area action. Speed seems about comparable overall, over the course of several missions.

The dominating option really paid off tonight. I took Cognix on a Positron 1, since she was up to 13. We started off with a full set of 8 characters, but lost 2 along the way...and found ourselves facing all 8 shadow simulacrums. Several wipes later, I suggested and the others agreed that I see how far I could get with Confuse. It took a good 10 minutes or so, but I was able to confuse 3 of them into killing each other, and we could wipe up the rest.

That was weird but fun.
