Log in. Kill lots of stuff.
Keep in mind, you have a chance for one to drop per kill per team member, so the larget the team, and the more mobs being killed, the better your chances are.
ITF is a popular choice for shard farming. As are ship raids.

You can actually run the arc 4 times in a row, but you have to chooses a different reward each time, and then have to wait a week.
So, the best way would be to chooses the 10 thread reward and then choose the Astral. Then wait a week...and repeat.

Not that this pertains to your "solo" question but I was told earlier that you can now craft Alphas with incarnate trial drops ---> which would be waaay easier IMO then just nonstop solo farming for shards, then having to collect the weekly favor components for the T3s/T4. Just another option for you.
One of my characters runs borea's endlessly repeating missions in the warzone and various repeating shadow shard missions, both on 0x8 no bosses. That character has 50+ shards saved up. they drop slow solo, but not terribly so, and you get lots of other stuff.
The truth is once you unlock the alpha you can get shards from any enemy you defeat that is worth drops. So just unlock the alpha, play however you used to and be patient. If you want to farm them, then kill lots of things as fast as possible just like any other form of farming.

Keep in mind shards will drop when exemplaring too - you can go back and do TFs like Manticore or Positron and incarnate shards have a chance to drop during it as long as Alpha slot is unlocked.

Borea's missions also accumulate Vanguard Merits.
150 Vanguard Merits = 1 Grai Matter
1 Grai Matter + 2 shard = any other common component.
That can speed up your accumulation of shards nicely, and obviously works even better for ship raids.
