Reroll character button

I thought it would be nice if you could reroll a character without having to delete and then remake the character.

My thought is that next to the delete button on the character select screen there would be a reroll button.

When you click that button it would use the same protection that delete uses (type the character name).

The system would then delete your character, but keep the name saved while you go through the standard character creation screen.

At the end you would have a level 1 character standing in Galaxy, with the original name.

This would save the 1 in a gajillion chance of somebody taking your name between deleting and trying to remake the character.

I know it isn't much of a chance. But, why have any chance.

I have no problem with this, as long as it doesn't take time away from something more substantial.

The way I do it though, when I absolutely have to make sure the name stays with me...

I wait til around 4am. I have my new costume pre-made and saved. Takes less than 30 seconds.

I plan on doing this sometime soon. I've had a controller name IllusionForce (ill/forcefield) since issue 5. The changes to Blind way back then soured me entirely on the toon and I never returned. I liked the concept though and couldn't believe I scored the name on Infinity, so I've kept him sitting at level 22 unplayed all these years.

Tonight, or sometime in the near future he will be rerolled as Ill/Time!

I absolutely understand it can be done that way. I've done that myself. Just seems that what I described above is a simple enough way to avoid the hassel. The character creator already saves names as it is.
Certainly a QoL issue, not an OMG it is broke without it issue.

You guys do know that the new character creator has a place down on the bottom of the screen (every screen, including the first one) where you can type in and check for the name you want. If it is free, the name is reserved until you finish the creation, check another name, or back out of the creator completely.

What actually would be nice is if they could do something like this where you'd keep the name and the event badges your character has.

I know I have some characters that would really 'work' better as a different powerset combo, or maybe a different AT, but they also have something like the 1st aniversary badge. Something like that always seems to make me not quite want to delete the character to reroll it.

I have a character that I would use this on in a heartbeat if it let us keep the badges.

I rolled her as a Villain with the full intention of her switching to full hero. I hate the secondary that I picked however and would love to reroll using the same name and basic concept but starting as a Hero and with a different secondary powerset.

The thing that keeps me from rerolling is the event badges she has.

I may eventually remake her, but I'll cringe due to the lost badges.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Heck, I don't even want ALL of the badges. I just would love a way to reroll a character while keeping the event badges. Or at the very least those anniversary badges.

I mean, I can understand why it might be a bad idea to allow accolades and PvP badges and all to transfer between incarnations of a character, but missing out on those others is just kind of painful for me. I don't want to delete a character who has the first anniversary badge or something ya know.

Oh, I definitely agree. The event badges and anniversary badges are the only ones I can see them allowing if they ever implemented something like this.

I ran into an issue last night doing this. I checked a name, it was available and reserved for me. When I went to enter Atlas, it said the name was unavailable. A /getglobalname afterwards confirmed this.

Thank you, Champion.

Which is my original point. There is a chance that for the few minutes between deleting and remaking the character you could lose the name to somebody else.
So, would be nice to have a "reroll" button.
And I agree about the event badges, that would be awesone. Also agree that any badges that affect the game should not be kept (accolades and such).

Alternatively, it could make the name reserved to you for, let's say an hour, after a deletion, or until you purposely relinquish the name. You'd need less new tech that way, I think.

Wait, you are saying that during the creation of the character, you checked the name and reserved it, then when you were finished with the creation you tried entering AP and the name was taken? You didn't check another name or leave the character creator during that time did you? Because if that is what happened, then it was not WAI.

If you left the character creator or checked another name, then you have given up the reservation. If you didn't then it was a bug and needs to be reported.

There was a bug like that in Beta where the reservation system wasn't allowing us to use the names we had reserved because they were reserved. That was annoying, but gotten around on the last screen by checking another name, then typing in the first one and entering the game. But it sounds like you found someone else had taken the name while you had it reserved.

It'd be a lot easier for the devs to just make the anniversary badges global like the Vet badges are/were.

That would be fantastic too. Either way would work for me. I'm not really going to hold my breath for either one of them though.
