In all seriousness a newbie freem guide would be a good idea. Probably stickied both here and in the general Archetypes forum.
1. Play through all your starting arcs and missions. They're fun, and give you a good handle on the the game, especially Twinshot (Hero) and Mr. Graves (Villain).
2. Don't be afraid to ask for help on the Help channel. We're a friendly bunch and don't mind answering questions. Please do be polite and use correct spelling.
3. There's an instance ("Trial" here in CoH) called Death From Below that's available from level 1. It gives good XP and good rewards. Learn to use the LFG queue to join it. Do your starting missions at least once though; don't use DfB to skip them.
4. Villains fo' life, yo.

If you're running low on Influence, go into Options and turn on Earn Double Inf while Exemplaring* and then run the Death From Below sewers trial**.
*Exemplaring is running at a lower level mechanically than your actual level.
**Click on LFG (Looking For Group) on the top of your chat window, click on 'Death From Below' and then Join Queue.

The only thing with the db Inf while being at a lower lever in anything they won't get the XP to level while a lower level. It might be faster for money(infany/influence) but slower in the process of leveling a character. I am just assuming some person will ask why am I not getting any XP with db inf
On a side note of doing the no XP thing is to make a character and bring a character to each level starting of the Mayham bank missions since they are scarce of villain side. To help newer ppl get [invader] for health

That is the point of the suggestion. If they are running low on inf, they don't want to outlevel their inf gain, so double inf/no XP means they'll gain inf faster. The setting says "Double Inf, No XP" so it will be pretty obvious why they are getting no XP.|

So, people are gonna come to this game, and they're gonna be free players. They can still READ the forums, I think. (Hi, freebies!)
So.
What's your advice to a freebie player? What should they know, what will help them decide whether to spend money? ("Go VIP, the game is awesome" is very practical advice, but I'm thinking stuff a little more applicable.)
