Is Diamagnetic Worth It? Is Shield's Defense Comparable To SR?

Basically I'm looking at a DM/Shield/Soul. The purpose of this combo is for hard single targets, Arena/Av's, Gm's Etc. While being nearly untouchable in all forms of content(obviously not THAT untouchable in trials but still decent). I dont have a proposed build, I havent had a chance to toy around in mids.

I know everyone picks the reactive interface for the damge, heck I have it on all my incarnates but I was wondering was Diamagnetic+DM's -tohit+Shields def+Darketest night would be opitmal for such a task. My friend has A DM/SR/Soul that barely gets touched in arena and surprisingly in trials. So is Shield a good substitute or should I look at SR?, I know shield is tougher for sure, but I'm not sure if it fits what I'm aiming for.

diamagnetic does negligible amounts of debuff to AVs/GMs due to debuff resist, diamagnetic applies -5% tohit to something without resistance up to 4 times, but if the target has resistance (for example AV and GM which have 85-87% resist to most debuffs), the debuff on an AV/GM would be a measly -0.6% or a max of -2.4% which is half the effectiveness of a single application of the debuff

On the other hand, if you are already soft capped (and, as an /SD you should be), even a 2% debuff can make a substantial difference in your damage intake. Remember that at softcap the bad guys only have a 5% to hit. Also, with enough AOE attacks, you can reliably ensure x3 applications of the debuff on the mobs around you.

If there is an AV, and you are hitting him with everything, x4 is likewise easy to apply.

I have taken Diagmagnetic over reactive on both of my incarnates. That said, I also tend to take musculature.

Assuming a 45% defense rating, what is an AV's to-hit? 10%? even dropping that by 2% means a 20% reduction in hits.

if you are soft capped you cant decrease that AVs chance to hit you. Their tohit is higher than 5% because of acc, and there currently is no way around that in the game.

Imo, SD > SR. SR is cheaper and easier to soft cap but SD comes with more dmg. An SD can become as tough as an SR but the SR can can never do as much dmg as the SD.

I can't speak for Arena, however for PvE & AVs, I think DM/SD/Soul with Reactive will be the better option.

Softcap + Darkest Night will cover you on iTrials - you will have little to fear from anything that isn't an AV with Darkest Night Running.

You want reactive for soloing AVs imo, because debuffs will be resisted and speeding up the fight will be the better option.

FWIW I run a DM/SD/Soul with T4 Cardiac*, T4 Reactive Radial, T4 Void Radial, T4 Cimerorans Core & T4 Rebirth Radial.

*Cardiac is an odd choice. I took it specifically to help run Darkest Night & Maneuvers as well as for the +Resistance bonus. Spiritual is an equally and possibly superior choice depending on build.

DM/SD scrapper would be a better choice if you are wanting to actually KILL those hard targets. If you just want to be able to survive the hard targets, roll a tank.

Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.

This makes it sound as if the Brute is not capable of killing AVs. It most certainly is capable of such feats, while the Scrapper does it marginally faster and and with slightly more risk.

I'm not sure where you get the idea that the Brute version can't solo AVs, but you are wrong.

Agreed. I have an SR scrapper and an SD brute and the SR was much cheaper to softcap. So if you're on a tight budget you'll get a tougher character via SR, which also has better defense debuff resistance and scaling damage resists.

That said, with adequate investment you can softcap SD and as previously stated SD's big advantage is in your damage output. My Fire/SR scrapper is great but I never play it anymore in favor of my SS/SD brute.

I agree with this.

I've been getting both diamagnetic and reactive for most of mine. I use reactive solo and diamagnetic for teaming because pretty much everyone and their sister has reactive so at least I'm contributing something.

But I get the tier-3 reactive before I start building diamagnetic at all.

Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

I'd roll this combo on a Scrapper also. DM/SD scrappers do more damage and survivability isn't an issue so why not?

Unless you really want the Brute versions of the Patron Pools, which is a good reason.

I'll third the scrapper notion. The brute will be capable for sure, but the scrapper pairs better with SD than a brute does. Don't have to worry about losing taunt aura on SD, at least.

Not trolling. Sure brutes have the ability to solo an AV, but a scrapper can do it faster. With incarnates today, any toon can solo an AV, that doesn't mean that they can do it well. A toon with as much +dam as a DM/SD has will always do better on a scrapper than a brute. The only difference for a brute compared to a scrapper for a DM/SD is the brute will have 200-300 more HP and a scrapper will have a significantly higher DPS.
