I'll see you in the AM.

I refuse to drive 400 miles (800 miles round trip) to avoid this Hurrinothing. I've already endured an earthquake this week, I can certainly handle some wind & rain.

I'll be on my deck.

With my cats.

See you then, Irene.

For the rest of y'all, I'll see you Live as soon as I can

I'm in the Richmond area, so was even closer than you. Just checked the map again, can you believe there have been 10 aftershocks? I felt a couple of those, but not all 10.

As someone down in Atlanta who's only hearing hype about the whole thing and seeing a vague wall of grey cloud whenever I look to the north, I'm beginning to be a little concerned that the last post I see here was at just after 8am...

Anyone with a connection up there able to let the world know it's all gonna be okay?

All that is planned fails. All that is born dies.
All that is built crumbles. This will always be true.

But memories remain, And that is beautiful.

Pretty sure it's just an issue of no one wanting to post in here that the last response was from 8am. To those the hurricane applies to, I think they're boarding up. To everyone else, hurricane doesn't apply so they probably won't post about it.

I can say a lot of the people I called at work said they were busy getting ready for the hurricane. And since they had time to spare on the phone, I'd say they're pretty safe.

I taped my cats to the window with the X's so they can watch debris fly by. I figure if they like watching birds they'll like watching lawn furniture fly by.

BTW, the rain is just beginning to the downpour and the wind is slowly, slowly coming. The supermarkets were packed and devoid of yesterday, at 9AM they were packed and devoid of everything.

That's when I remembered: I own an obscene amount of tupperware, two bread makers, and a 3lb bag of rice. I've spent my day cooking and baking bread.

I live on the south shore of Long Island. My town was in the evac south (South of Sunrise Highway) but we decided to stay.

Fortunately the hurricane wasn't as bad as they predicted, in my area anyways.

Some neighboring towns got hit much harder than we did.

We lost power briefly Sunday 3:00am but it came back on within a minute. Our cable and internet held out until Sunday late afternoon. It's been offline since. What really sucks is that there's service a few blocks from my house. There's no ETA when service on my block will be restored. So that means no CoH until it's fixed

I've been tethering my cell phone for internet here and there but my phone gets super hot if I leave it going for too long.

The railroad on my branch is still suspended. I had to catch a ride to work with my brother this morning - meant getting up 90minutes earlier than usual, and being at work an hour early. Ugh. Not sure how I'm getting home lol

tl;dr

Hurricane wasn't as bad in my area. I'm safe. No internet/cable. Trains not running.

Why are you storing water in your bathtubs?

Oh. I never really thought about the water going out.

And, I live in North Carolina, which is not exactly a hurricane-free zone. So, I learned something today. Go me!

Being a long time hurricane vet, coastal plain reservoirs and water pipes are usually right in the hurricane path as well, storing water in bathtubs and sinks means you'll have it to use for toilet, washing, etc, and if you have no other storage, drink and cook (with some boiling) if your water supply gets contaminated by debris or shut off.

Yeah, if you pour water directly into the bowl (bucket of water from the tub, e.g.), it creates the flushing action.

Though, as I had to remind my guest in the basement, you do not do that if you're below the sewer line and the power is also out. You need the pump to get the water up and into the sewer line. If there's no electricity and no water, you have to rely on gravity.

And I'm half way done drinking all the tub water.

Northern Connecticut here, and potentially out of power until Saturday.

There are currently (at the exact time of this post) 363750 people served by one power company that are out of power, or 29 percent of their customers, with 1786 of them in my town alone and 8 downed trees within a mile of my house.

I'm running on a generator. Fun times.
