Looking to get my youngest a laptop; can it play COx?

Hey folks, my youngest (young) always like to hop on while I'm playing the game, and she is going to need a new computer for school so I was wondering if one of the new SandyBridge second generation i3 processors with on-die graphics would be able to play the game; I'm looking at getting her a cheap laptop and didn't know if the new Intel processors would be up to snuff in terms of playing the game. She doesn't need high detail graphics, just a fairly smooth game experience.

Thanks for any feedback.

City of Heroes supports an OpenGL 1.4 rendering mode that will still run on ancient graphics cards like Radeon 8500, so yes, the game will run on a Sandy Bridge graphics chip.

At lowest settings, CoX is quite smooth on my first generation i5, and playable during a Rikti mothership raid so I'd say there won't be a problem.

Thanks for your replies folks.

I believe it can be playable with Intel HD graphics, but it may be a bit limited. There's an Acer TimelineX 13" laptop with an nVidia 540M which can run it at 50+fps in Ultra. No, really.

no.

it cannot run it in Ultra.

The 540m has a theoretical MegaPixel throughput of 2,688mp and a theoretical Megatexel through put of 10,752. http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=98&pgno=7

The starting point for MPixel throughput in Ultra Mode on Nvidia hardware with low settings is a little under 11,808 MegaPixel / 47,232 Megatexel :: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=251721

Got her one of the new 2nd gen i3 laptops; pretty low specs with only 3GB ram; it was only ~$380 ($413 w/tax). We're running the game at 1366x768 or something like that; low detail. It is running just fine. She's really excited about it.

I'm excited by the fact that a) my wee one can game with me, and b) this really provides her with an incentive to work on her reading.

Congrats! I've been looking into a beater of a machine for littlemage to play on. She loves making my characters jump. There was a thread on these forums about "What my 6 year old has learned from COH" and it was adorable.

I have a $300 Wal-Mart special laptop that runs CoH reasonably well. It requires pretty low settings and one of those cooling fan laptop pads helps immensely. I suppose the question for any modern laptop isn't "Will it run COH" but "how WELL will it run CoH".

That is how mine started. It is amazing how quickly she is picking it up. She is now level 5 and she is totally gung ho.

Littlemage is not quite 4, but she'd probably pick it up. She starts junior kindergarten in a few weeks, and I know they're going to do some computer stuff, so we'll see. We've tried to get her to play games on the Wii and playstation, but she doesn't seem to get it.
