Discussion: CoH Launcher deprecated August 4; last chance to get the Wisp Aura!

The City of Heroes launcher will no longer be supported or allow players to connect to City of Heroes on Thursday, August 4. This change is set to occur during the morning maintenance scheduled for 4:00 a.m. PDT (7:00 a.m. EDT / 1:00 p.m. BST / 2:00 p.m. CEST).

As we will be switching over to the NCsoft Launcher or the Steam platform, this will also be the last chance to get the in-game Wisp Aura! After the maintenance on Thursday, August 4, players will no longer be able to receive the Wisp Aura. So if you are using the legacy City of Heroes launcher, be sure to update to the NCsoft Launcher before Thursday, August 4 to receive your in-game Wisp Aura!

How does one start the game in safe mode with the new launcher? I've been working on trying to get my game to start up outside of safe mode on the old launcher, but I can't seem to be able to isolate what's going on with it.

Is there a menu in the new NCSoft Launcher that allows me to start in Safe Mode? Because I can't find one. Otherwise, I'll be locked out of the game on my desktop until I get the issue resolved...

Always up for teaming with good players, so hit me up: @Deceivius and @Deceivius2

Open the Launcher, right-click City of Heroes, choose Properties, check the box beside "Launch in Safe Mode" at the bottom of the window.

Open the Launcher, right-click on the game and select Properties. There is a checkmark there to Launch in Safe Mode.

Edit: Scooped by seconds.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

I got the aura, so I personally don't care about the answer to this question. But just because I know that people will be holding you to it later, do you literally mean "no longer" as in never, you're going to make a special point of making this an all-time exclusive item? Or do you mean, "no longer" as in for now, but possibly as a purchasable add-on in the Paragon Store, part of the reward tree, or by some other means you haven't thought of yet at some indeterminate point in the future?

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

Hey wait a minute, that means all new characters I create after that date can no longer use Wisps unless I 'buy' them after issue 21 hits?

PLEASE CLARIFY

No, it means accounts that switch to the NCLauncher (or are created) after August 4 won't unlock the Wisps aura. If you already unlocked the Wisps aura, it is yours to keep forever, for free.

No, Wisps are unlocked per-account, not per-character. If you've got them now, you'll always have them on new characters as well.

(Try launching from the classic loader and making a new character with Wisps for proof--it's not tied to the new launcher.)

Ah ok, still, that seems like an odd choice - taking it away from people. I totally agree with getting on with forcing the new launcher, as it is superior, however taking away the Wisps aura seems... like a weird choice. What does that accomplish?

Nobody who has received it will have it taken away.

The free gifting of the Wisp Aura, which was the carrot to make people early adopters of the new Launcher, will stop on Aug 4.

It got people to adopt early. If they then say "hey, you can all keep getting it forever" no one will believe them again. "Hey, if we don't adopt, they'll give it to us anyway".

My bet is that they probably will eventually, but not for a while, at least. Or we'll have to buy it.

This is my assumption as well; it'll likely be added to the Paragon Market when CoH Freedom launches for like 20 or 40 points ($0.25 or $0.50).

So, how do we claim the aura? I've also got a jetpack I'm supposed to get, and I don't know how to claim that either....

You can access the aura in the tailors. You might need to be level 30 to unlock and use it though.

As to the jetpack, click on "powers" on your powers tray, scroll down until you see the jetpack, and either click on it to add to a tray, or drag it to a tray.

Welcome to the forums.

to clarify, you do not need to have run the aura mish to unlock wisp aura, it should be avail from lvl 1 (or char creation)

Thanks everyone. I went to the tailor, and the Wisp Aura is available, but I'm being charged Influence for it. Is that right?

You're charged for alterations, not to purchase. All costume changes in the tailor have a price. If you have a Costume Token, you can 'spend' that instead.

Yes thats normal. You are always charged influence whenever you make changes to your costumes in the tailor. You can of course use one of your tailor tokens instead.

I switched to the new launcher months ago so I'm not really worried about the aura personally. But for what it's worth if doesn't become something we can eventually buy with Paragon Points I'd be really amazed. I understand it was used as an enticement for the new launcher. But as JayboH says what point would it ultimately serve if it becomes one of the very few unlockables in the game that becomes impossible for any newer player to get?

I know things that used to be "exclusive enticements" (such as the preorder sprints and helmets) have since become available in other ways. But the Devs never made a big deal about stressing their exclusivity right before they made them un-exclusive. The whole idea that the Devs seem to be spinning this thing as the "last chance" to get this aura seems very weird and misguided somehow. They'd be better off not hyping the aura at this point at all and just let it become unceremoniously available with Paragon Points at a later date. *shrugs*

It teaches people to not drag their feet about adapting to changes in the game. Adapt early you get rewarded. Wait until you have to, no reward.

So anyone who want's to complain about not getting the aura because they waited to long can bite my shiny metal.... well you know.

I believe it is one of a few costume items that are NOT available at character creation, but it definitely becomes available once you've logged into the game for the first time.

I may be wrong about that--I was messing around with a character concept last night and didn't see the option on a new character, but I wasn't specifically looking for Wisps to begin with.

The irony here is that the new launcher is clearly better than the old one regardless. That was the only "enticement" I needed to switch to it many months ago.

I suppose when this aura appears in the Paragon Points store there will be people who'll complain that their once "exclusive" aura has been cheapened the same way just about every other exclusive item in this game has been already. People will complain about anything really. *shrugs*

I had installed the launcher years ago because of some beta for one of NCSofts other games. You could launch CoH through it, but i couldn't figure out how to launch the CoH test server so i never used it. Besides I had a shortcut that would bypass the updater so I could play the game if the update server was acting up (assuming my client was up to date).

And I don't care if you will be able to buy this aura later. Those are points I'll be able to spend on something else.
