I've read where this launcher wasn't very good a long time ago and that very well may have been the case. But when I started using it a few months ago I could easily access the Live, Test and Beta servers without any difficulty. It updates these clients much better than the old CoH updater ever did. It has basically been nothing but an improvement over what I was using before.

That's great for you and me. But I'm sure the player who starts playing this game say a year from now will appreciate being able to get access to an aura that otherwise would have been pointlessly impossible for them to enjoy otherwise.

The problem was that I couldn't find any instructions on how to set it up for the test (and later beta) server. Other than that it worked just fine.

My comment was more a statement that I wouldn't complain and say the aura was cheapened when it eventually becomes available to purchase.

Now I believe the devs stated that the bonus stuff from the CoV Collectors Edition will never be available to purchase, unless you some how find a copy where the serial number hasn't been used yet. But I don't think they ever made a statement like that about other edition upgrades (like the CoH DVD upgrade). So Power Slide and the V.I.P. badge might eventually become available for purchase.

They'd be better off not hyping the aura at this point at all and just let it become unceremoniously available with Paragon Points at a later date. *shrugs*
I'm going to guess that the wisps aura might make an appearance in the Tier 9 VIP options at a later date.

I'm suspecting the same -might- happen with the CoH and CoV DVD bonus items as well.

The devs stated that the bonus stuff from the CoV Collectors Edition would only be available if you purchased that particular edition of the game. It would never be available any other way. Copies are listed as being available on EBay and Amazon so that's going to be the only way to get them.

IIRC (and according to Paragonwiki) there were no exclusive in-game items related to the CoV Collectors edition. The only exclusive items related to that were the physical items in the box. Regardless I've never heard of them planning to single out CoV items versus any other expansion for this game.

The Paragon Points system will provide a new opportunity for people to buy in-game items that people originally had to pay for anyway (like the items from the Good vs Evil Edition) so I see no good reason why the Devs would avoid offering any/all of these things.

I guess someone needs to fix that page:

http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Unlock...or.27s_Edition

http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Unlock...rachnos_Symbol

Those two pieces are ONLY available with a code from from the CoV Collectors Edition. And when the devs said they wouldn't make those pieces available any other way it wasn't an off hand comment, it was a promise.

Actually it was CoH DVD, and even that wasn't quite true. They never said that it "would never be available any other way". What Positron said was that they would not give away anything that players spent money on.

Note that this was before NCsoft bought out Cryptic (the maker's of that promise), and that Positron is not in charge of Marketing. He is also not the Producer of the game. Paragon Studios is (subject to NCsoft's whim) in charge now, the exclusive period is over for every other DVD/Collector's bonus (even the EB GR-preorder enhancements are going to be available), so it is high time the CoH (VIP badge, Cape of the Four Winds, Prestige Power Slide) and CoV (Arachnos Chest Symbol and Cape) bonus items be made available.

And I can say that with impunity, as I have them both.

Yep that page needs to be fixed. But remember there was a time long ago when the Devs made a "promise" there would never be a way to get the preorder Prestige Sprints, CoV Helmets and so on either. Frankly (as Snow Globe has implied) I'd consider it shortsighted to think they might choose to leave ANYTHING off the Paragon Market table. *shrugs*

As we will be switching over to the NCsoft Launcher or the Steam platform, this will also be the last chance to get the in-game Wisp Aura! After the maintenance on Thursday, August 4, players will no longer be able to receive the Wisp Aura. So if you are using the legacy City of Heroes launcher, be sure to update to the NCsoft Launcher before Thursday, August 4 to receive your in-game Wisp Aura!

Those bonus items should have been made available a LONG time ago.

Clearly you figured it out - anyone else who insists on trying to run this game under Linux are probably computer savvy enough to figure it out too.

Actually the devs promise about the CoV:CE items was made after the prestige sprints were announced as vet rewards, which was long after NCSoft bought the franchise. And at that time they also stated that none of the pre-order bonuses (CoH or CoV) were every stated as being exclusive.

Now there's not really much that I, or anyone else outside for Paragon Studios, can do if they really want to put the Collectors Edition stuff in the Paragon Marketplace. I would just be very disappointed that they went back on their word about that stuff being exclusive to limited editions of the game.

Why? You paid extra for those things back in 2005. Would it really be -that- different for someone else to also PAY extra for those same things in 2011? You got the box with all the physical items - someone who uses the Paragon Market would still not be able to get those things. Frankly I'd rather allow the company get a new chance to make more money off of these two particular items than to "preserve" any sense of perceived exclusivity. *shrugs*

Well, I can point you to several other offers from this game that stated they were "exclusive" that were later offered in another way:
  • Wisps Aura
  • GR-Pre Order Bonuses.
  • Prestige Sprints
  • CoV helmets
  • Good Vs Evil at Wal-Mart (that was a marketing blunder.)
When something says "exclusive", the best course of action is to treat it as a limited time, not forever and a day.

Also, please provide a direct quote or provide any reference to said claim. I think you might have subtly altered what they did say because you are trying to remember something from 5 years ago. Fun fact: people do not remember details all that well, and that is why witness testimony isn't always accurate.

1) That is bad for business.
2) Exclusive has been used for every other special of this type, so it is glaringly bad that the 2 collector's edition in-game goodies are not available in some manner.
3) They never said exclusive forever.

Edit:
4) 6 years in the Software industry equates to a lifetime. The any promises of exclusiveness of the early DVD editions has outlived the term's lifetime.

When I first read all this, I thought they were using an entirely NEW launcher than the one we downloaded about half a year ago. I was gonna be pretty ticked if they were going to keep switching on us like that XD.
