I'm disheartened, saddened, and hurt. Just like the rest of us. This game has meant more to me than I'm been realizing at this moment.
The only thing I want to know is this: Why?
I think we, as a paying customer base, should demand answers. We should start at the top.
This man, Matt Turetzky, is the head of NCSOFT US. Here's his twitter account: http://twitter.com/mturetzky.
Tweet him. Bug him. Demand answers as to why we've been blindsided, bent over, and blatantly screwed
Any other places we could write/call/tweet/email to at least get some sort of statement or open up a dialogue? -
I went with Water/TA. So far, its a blast. Glue arrow helps keep enemies in Whirlpool, Sonic arrow is always great, and I can light my own Oil Slicks
.

I'll gladly bring along my Spines/Dark scrapper "Atlantian Guardian". He's 37, if I remember correctly, and has already run one ITF, so he's good to go. Is there still room?
-
So, I ran across a Call of the Sandman: Chance to Heal Self proc the other day, and thought "My Elec/Stone Dom could use that", otherwise I would've sold it. Given that this is a placeable AoE, not a click power like Mesmerize or Mass Hypnosis, would the proc be worth placing in Static Field?
I'm expecting it to be a decent chance for +Heal because of how often it would proc, plus how many targets I might have in the field.
Anyone tried this out, or know if it would work? -
How does one start the game in safe mode with the new launcher? I've been working on trying to get my game to start up outside of safe mode on the old launcher, but I can't seem to be able to isolate what's going on with it.
Is there a menu in the new NCSoft Launcher that allows me to start in Safe Mode? Because I can't find one. Otherwise, I'll be locked out of the game on my desktop until I get the issue resolved... -
Thanks, Bill! I like the look of that toon, but I'm really looking to get as close to a CoT mage as possible. They've always been some of my favorite foes. I had no idea they were giving us CoT costume pieces! I'll probably go ahead and create the toon and re-do his costume.
But, until then, I'd still love ideas!
Would the "butt cape" work for some sort of lower body selection? -
I think ive finally settled on a concept for the Elec/earth Dom I'm planning, and I wanted to come here for some inspiration for the costume. The only thing I could think of to make the concept work is a Circle of Thorns Mage. Perhaps a higher up Mage, looking closer to the bosses than the Lt. Mages. Only problem is, there's no "skirts" that would seem to fit the concept... or is there?
Do any of you out there have any good costumes of CoT Mages? Or think you could put one together to help a creatively challenged individual like myself? You have my eternal gratitude if so!
I've got access to most of the packs (magic, ninja, cyborg,)
Help? -
Quote:First off, thank you Dechs, for replying with great advice and knowledge.I apologize if I sounded condescending in any way; this was not my intent. You both have very valid reasons for choosing Cloak of Fear over Oppressive Gloom.
I was simply explaining my standpoint, as I had not done so in my initial quick comment.
And to your point, Des, I know for a fact that most times, that OG does more damage to my tank than it prevents. I like to think of him as an outlier though. My stalker loved oppressive gloom all the time. The tank uses it when the minions have nasty debuffs (I'm lookin' at you, Wrongbow).
Second, I plan on taking BOTH, and running them at different times when they might be needed. I hadn't thought about slotting Siphon Insight into CoF, but now I can't think of a reason to NOT get it due to the set bonuses.
My Katana/Dark stalker, in slight difference to Dechs, has LOVED Cloak of Fear for it's ability to stack the fear that's associated with the Demoralize Debuff from Assassin's Strike. It stacks to ensure that those bosses are cowering while you hack away, not to mention the to-hit debuff stacks as well.
I've gotten three possible good builds with this thread, and tons of good advice, so thank you guys! -
Quote:Yes, it comes up 800x600, but not in a "window". It just goes up to full screen like "normal".This should have nothing to do with your monitor. The Unigine Heaven demo ran fine with this monitor, right?
So, when you start the game in safe-mode, it comes up 800x600 in a window? Can you bump up the graphics settings and resize the window (not through the game's graphics settings, but just grabbing the corner of the window and making it bigger/smaller)?
I can't make it "windowed" to get it to that point where I could drag the window and make it larger. It re-sizes everything, not just CoH, to 800x600. When I ALT-TAB out to my browser window, it is at 800x600. Does that make sense? Or is it what you were asking? -
Quote:I tried this, and it still hangs up at the "Loading..." screen. Goes no further. So, what happens when you change resolution or enable windowed mode, quit the game, disable safe mode and start the game?
Here's what I did: I logged in to the game in safe mode, pulled up the options menu, used the dropdown menu to select the "Desktop", quit the game, and started it back up. As I type this, it's been three minutes and it's still sitting there at the "Loading..." screen.
Could it have something to do with my monitor? Someone was asking earlier about whether I had it plugged in to my video card through an adapter... it's plugged in to one, now that I check. It's a standard VGA plugged into my nVidia Geforce GTX 260 via an adapter that has two rows of plugs, with a flat piece off to the side (which has 4 plugs around it). Sorry, I'm not much of one for knowing adapters and the likes. Could this have anything to do with it? I hope not, I'd really not like to have to give up this nice monitor. -
So, lately, I've become obsessed with Spines. Moreso with the ability to customize the spines. I've got a Spines/SR that I'm loving the concept of, and I decided to get into the world of Spines/Dark, since I've found a concept that I'll actually enjoy playing.
Tentatively, I'm considering building for S/L defense, but I'm not going to go all crazy trying to reach the soft cap with it. For one, Kinetic Combats are *incredibly* overpriced, and my alt-itis and ADD keeps me from building too many merits on one toon :P. Not that I'm against getting a few, just that I'd rather not spend all my time chasing them.
Would it be more sound to shoot for melee defense, instead? I mean, it's quite a bit easier to shoot for melee defense (at least from what I've encountered).
What should I be building towards? Besides obvious +end powers, since I'll be sucking wind like a vacuum.
Does anyone have a decent build that's not *too* expensive? -
Quote:Thank you for helping me this far, Mandu. I tried switching to windowed mode, but anytime I try to switch to anything from the dropdown menu, it requires me to restart. And I cannot start in anything but Safe Mode, so that doesn't seem to be working. If you haven't changed the size of your icons yourself then they are likely just fine. But just in case it's
control panel>appearance>display
From there there are three check boxes 100% 125% and 150%.
By standard vga port I'm guessing you mean the standard connector on your video card and monitor, not some sort of adapter.
I'm running out of ideas here. Try switching from full screen mode to windowed mode.
I'm really hoping to hear back from Tex to find out more about what might be going on. Would it be worth it to contact NCSOFT support? Get someone on the phone to help me troubleshoot things? -
Quote:I tried installing the drivers provided by Samsung, and booted up CoH, and it still hung up without me going to Safe Mode. It's connected through a standard VGA port.Silly question but did you load your monitor drivers? Now, it shouldn't need them but I loaded mine.
I notice it doesn't list any info for your monitor in CoHelper.
Monitor:
Monitor's Max Resolution: (blank)
What kind of monitor do you have and how is it connected to your PC? I would assume is DVI-D. Did you check the monitor's manufacturer and check for drivers?
Mine says this.
Monitor: Dell U2410(Digital)
Monitor's Max Resolution: 1920,1200 -
Quote:I'm set to 1920x1200. I've tried changing my resolution in game to 1920x1200 (Desktop), but it says that I need to quit and restart before the changes will take place. But, I can't quit and restart in anything but Safe ModeWhat resolution is your desktop set to in comparison to the resolution in game? In game go into settings for screen resolution. You will see two possible settings that match your desktop. One will say something like 1680 by 1050 and the other will say 1680 by 1050 (desktop). Choose the one that has (desktop) after it and try setting your resolution to that. For some reason with some systems coh can only match that resolution or safe and trying something higher or lower causes it to default to safe mode resolution. I haven't seen anybody with that problem for a couple years so I didn't think of it till now.
If this is the situation and you have your desktop set to a lower resolution for text and icon size then you will have to play at the lower desktop resolution or else raise your desktop resolution to where you want it in the game.
And that reminds me of yet one other possibility. Do you have your desktop icon and text set to be a larger size? If you have it set to 100% or 125% then it's fine but at 150% coh doesn't like it., so it's not working like I need it to.
How do I see what my desktop icons set to? I'm on Windows 7, and I haven't changed anything in any settings like that, so I should be on the defaults.
Could it be something to do with my monitor? I got a new monitor from work, and it's larger than I used to have, thus the 1920x1200 resolution. -
Quote:I started the game in Safe Mode, and slid the graphics up to "Ultra", and it went to the CoH 'Loading screen', and then came back with better graphics, and handled it quite nicely. Only thing is, it's still in 800x600 :\. So, I guess the answer is, "Nothing unexpected really happened".Since you can get the game to run in the game's safe mode, what happens if you start the game in safe mode and then increase the graphics quality without enabling the advanced graphics options? Don't forget to hit "Apply" after moving the graphics quality slider.
What should I try next, Tex? -
Quote:I won't be able to try this out until a few days from now, but once I get a chance I'll let you know how it goes.Since you can get the game to run in the game's safe mode, what happens if you start the game in safe mode and then increase the graphics quality without enabling the advanced graphics options? Don't forget to hit "Apply" after moving the graphics quality slider.
As far as I can remember, I'm able to crank up the settings up to "Ultra" once I'm in game. -
Quote:I've disabled Vidalia, and tried to connect after disabling, and it hasn't made a difference. I uninstalled the Spyware toolbars, and it seems to not have made a difference. I might not be doing things correctly, though.First a question. Do you have a graphics tablet connected to your computer? In the past there have been circumstances where graphics tablets interfered with CoH and kept it from loading in anything but safe mode. The only solution was to uninstall the tablet and all it's software.
Second, a suggestion. Disable Vidalia. From what I've been able to find it's a program that is supposed to hide your identity and ip while you surf the web. Of course with all those spyware toolbars you have installed that's sort of like a fire truck with lights and siren running turning off it's headlights so it won't be noticed. At any rate there is a possibility that the software is preventing the server from seeing the game client in anything except it's base state.
Quote:If you can run other OpenGL applications (like the Unigine Heaven Benchmark here: http://unigine.com/download/#heaven with the API set to OpenGL), then it might be a problem with the game or game settings.
If other OpenGL applications also fail to run correctly, then it might be a problem with your system (hardware, drivers, other applications interfering with OpenGL, etc).(what with the cool flying ships and all :P).
What should I do now? -
Quote:Thanks, Tex... good to see a Red Name responding to this problem. I downloaded nVidia's latest drivers for my GeForce GTX 260, downloaded a driver sweeper, uninstalled the old drivers, did the driver sweep, then installed the new drivers (rebooting when the programs required), and am still not able to start the game unless I'm in Safe Mode.My recommendation would be to re-install your video drivers. In particular, you might want to run one of the driver sweeper tools after uninstalling the video drivers to make sure all remnants of any old drivers are removed before re-installing one of the latest drivers.
Any suggestions beyond this point? -
Quote:I tried both those things, and nothing new happened. When I try to launch the game in anything but Safe Mode, it just sits there at the "loading..." screen. Doesn't bring up the login menu. I even disabled my AVG firewall to see if that was the problem, and it doesn't seem to be.Have you tried plugging your computer directly into the cable modem to see if the router is the cause of the problems? If the problem goes away, you may want to check for a firmware update for the router or try to find a better router.
Would a call into NCSOFT support be a wise decision at this point, in case they might be able to help? Or should I continue to try forum help? -
Quote:How is your computer connected to the router? Is it an ethernet connection or a wireless connection? If it's a wireless connection, it's possible that you are flooding the wireless buffer with data when the settings are turned up (not in safe mode).
When you say it is a cable connection going through a router, is it a cable coming into a cable modem and then connected with ethernet to a router or is it a cable coming into a combination of cable modem and router all in one box?
My computer is plugged into a router, and my router is plugged into a cable modem. I'm not using a wireless connection. -
It's a cable connection going through a router. I'm able to get through on the safe mode, though. Is there anything about the firewall/connection that would work on safe mode that wouldn't work through the regular mode?
-
Quote:I didn't know about the motherboard issue... but it ran fine until I moved into a new apartment and got on a new connection to the internet. I haven't heard of anyone having the same problem. I'm sure it hasn't only been a problem that only *I* am experiencing.Heh, the first thing that jumped out at me is probably not related but your Gigabyte motherboard is loaded with an Asus bios.
Motherboard Product: EP45-UD3P
BIOS Version: _ASUS_ - 42302e31
So what steps have been taken? Have you run -verify on the coh loader?
Have you tried a complete uninstall and reinstall?
Has there been any other posts in the gameplay/tech issues forum with people who had the same problem?
I'm not sure what "-verify" means... is it the same as clicking "verify all files" on the original CoH Loader? -

I posted a while back with a problem, but didn't seem to be able to determine what was going on with my PC. So, a while back, I got my PC back up and running, downloaded all the patches, and tried to be on my way in game. Well, it just hangs up on the small, rectangular box that says "Loading...". When I launch the CoH/CoX launcher, I'm able to pull the game up in "Safe Mode", and have been for a while. Problem is, the graphics aren't up to what this rig is capable of, and I'm running at 800x600 resolution.
I'll gladly do any diagnostics and post my PC info. Can anyone help me out here?
I'll post a DxDiag in the next post. If it lets me...
Okay, so apparently, the DxDiag is too much information to be posted on here. Is there anything pertinent that I need to post on here from the DxDiag?
