And the UK's top Sci-Fi Icon of all time is......

.......Capt. Mal Reynolds??

Now, there's a shocker!! Shows just how much love there still is for Firefly!

SFX Magazine, one of the UK's top sci-fi magazines had 10,000 people vote for their favourites and it was published in a special 1 off magazine, out now, but we get a look at the top 10 here.

Some interesting surprises in there as well, only 2 Star Wars characters in the top 100? That will be Vader and Solo, I would imagine. Buffy did well, with the lady herself at 4 and Spike right behind her in 5th.

Nice to see that UK sci-fi fans are so discerning, I would have put good money on it being The Doctor at number 1!

Or rather, how well organized the Browncoats are online. This is just like the time River Tam beat out Batman in an IO9 Poll.

Also, Roj Blake and Professor Quatermass didn't even crack the top ten? Kids today, no respect for the classics!

I sense a stitch up.

Although, this would be the perfect excuse to have a Doctor Who Firefly crossover.

Edit: Seriously though, that list is all kinds of weird. Ianto gets 6, but Kirk and Picard aren't on the top ten?

It's worth bearing in mind, this is a UK based thing, so Ianto getting in there isn't too much of a shock, he was MASSIVELY popular over here!

Not sure how the voting was done though, if it was online I can sense a disturbance in the Force, but still a surprise for number one.

*strolls out of SFX's computer room, tossing hydrospanner in one hand and whistling innocently*

...what? Mal is the greatest thing since sliced fa mian bing, you should all know and accept that by now. Move along, nothing to see here, all is proceeding as I have foreseen it. Oh, and watch Castle, it's awesome and stuffed with Firefly/Buffy backrefs (watch the Halloween episode, "Vampire Weekend" for a full 45 of pure fanservice.)

Apart from one even more suspicious thing: there's a lot of love for Torchwood out there, and not for Shouty Gwen but for Ianto. Beating out Starbuck and EVERY SINGLE TREK CAPTAIN is a bit of a surprise score for the Welsh side there, boyo...

Is it time for the dance of joy yet?

I'm with True, kids nowadays, woefully ignorant of the classics from their own culture.

While I love Firefly, I really wonder how Capt Mal Reynolds got the number one spot, when the movie bombed, the show had like twelve episodes, and really if I went to 10,000 different people with a picture of Picard, Kirk and Mal, more people would recognize Picard and Kirk.

Now that said, yay Mal! \o/

Well the list was for top Sci-Fi icons of the 21st century.....so going by that line of thought I can see Mal beating Star Trek, and Star Wars, but the fact that he beat the Doctor in a UK survey is rather astonishing.

Anyway, kudos to Nathan Fillion.

Also I reiterate that IF Lucas ever completely remakes the classic Star Wars from scratch (yeah yeah I know, sacriledge! blah blah) then please get Nathan Fillion as the new Han Solo!

Even as a diehard Browncoat, I feel I have to employ my usual rule with these kind of lists:

"Never trust any list with the words 'of all time' in it as they have a very poor grasp of temporal mechanics."

A British SF poll without one of the Doctors in first place is an automatic fail. While I do like Firefly and wish it lasted for more than half of a season, it is not the best SF of all time. It might have been with more seasons.

The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.

Pretty decent Western, though, in a Fallout: New Vegas sort of way.
