my little brother (9yrs old) wants to play coh. I want to start him with something easy. What would you recommend? I was thinking MM... But maybe a tank would be better?

I'd advise against a MM, while they are powerful effective damage mitigation can be rather difficult for a lot of them. If you do go MM, I'd say give him a Bots/Traps it's a combo that works well with minimum pet management (it still benefits from it, but doesn't need it).

I'd advise a Scrapper or Brute. They aren't as tough as a Tanker but they deal more damage. Give him one of the more toggle reliant secondaries (Willpower and Invulnerability are good) and he can focus on beating up bad guys.

An MM is actually one of the toughest AT's to play, since you need to control all of your pets.

Brutes and Scrappers are very easy to play, that might be better.

MMs aren't one of the F2P options due to the complexity of the AT. Something like a Kat/wp scrapper, or Claws/wp brute will work.

In a couple of weeks the 9 year old will probably be better than many of the 30+ year old players.

The 9 year old likely has more applicable gaming experience.

actually he doesn't play alot of video games. We picked claws/wp brute. He's running tutorial now. Thank you guys for ur help.

Late to the party, but yeah, I'd say Brute or Scrapper for a starting character. Enough damage output to offer instant gratification in taking enemies down and enough survivabilty to prevent a lot of deaths early-on while learning. They're good ATs for about anyone who is first starting out but especially so for those with short attention spans or those who may be easily discouraged.

This description applies to but is not necessarily limited to children.

More than narrowing it down to Brute or Scrapper, I'd honestly just say Scrapper. Brutes are more survivable, but you do need to manage fury - which can lead to either not using it to its fullest or getting overly reckless. Scrappers are just point and go - and critical hits are fun to get.

I was thinking Scrapper or Brute. Good choice! Let us know how he does!

Good choice on the Brute. I've shown several kids CoH from ages 5-8. I too had thought that the 5 yr old needed something as simple as possible and picked out a MM for her, whereas the others got Scrappers, Blasters, and a Brute.

Turned out the MM was a mistake due to what I'm going to term the "fire and forget" factor. With the other kids, they were constantly pushing buttons for attacks while in combat and the other kids or an adult might tell them when an attack was recharged.

With the MM it was push one button and wait until target dies. She got bored and walked away pretty quickly.

Let him play anything he wants.

You're taking about a 9-year-old who doesn't play a lot of video games, though. Brute really is easy to pick up. Something like a Claws/WP Brute is good enough for an introduction.

For his second toon, he can probably broaden out and try something else. That'd be a good one for letting him pick whatever he wants to try playing.

And +1 on telling us how he does.

I would have recommended a Blaster, to be honest. They just has to worry about being in range at that point, especially if they are playing with you.

he likes his Brute, played him for a bit yesterday got him to lvl 5. he plays all on his own, and appears to like it. i told him he could make other characters if he wanted, so he also made a blaster (AR/elec), i don't think he really got to play him though. my computer is currently the only one with the game loaded on it, so we can't team up.

You don't play MMs or team with them much, do you?

No he doesn't. Particularly not with mine.

Bots/Traps is more than likely the most overpowered thing this game will ever see, but I've got experience with Mercs, Thugs, Necro, Demons, Storm, Pain, Thermal and Dark. All of these combinations have incredible potential, from x8 maps to soloing GMs. Hell, the bots/traps can do it on SOs.

Children I find, despite the lack of what adults may call common sense, have sponges for brains if you can focus them. A kid could be taught to play alot better than some adults you know on anything, the hard part is perhaps teaching them how to win with grace and lose with dignity or maybe that just my nephew. I would be careful who they come in contact with as its the internet. I would trust no bugger.
