You need to unlock the first Incarnate slot - the Alpha slot - and then craft a Tier 3 enhancement to go in it.
You can unlock the slot by running the Incarnate Trials, or you can also do it by completing Mender Ramiel's mission at the Ouroboros Citadel - I'd suggest doing his arc, as it gives quite a bit of background info on Incanrates and the Alpha slot.

It needs Going Rogue.

Lets see :

Easiest way to unlock (to me) is
http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Mender_Ramiel

but you might need company for the second mission - the one against trapdoor. He clones himself (bifurcation) and the clones increase his regen. THis mission has a choice in it, so it is not auto-completible.

Some people will use the auto-complete on the mission granted by Lady Gray (so you go talk to her, then auto-complete the door mission, then talk to her again).

Alpha slot powers can be made directly from shards and TF componets, or via thread componets, all others are via threads (threads drop in Incarnate Trials, Shards without).

Yes.

Yes, the first two tiers of the Alpha abilities will not, but the third and fourth tiers will give you a level shift.

Later Incarnate abilities from the Incarnate Trials can give you more special-purpose level shifts -- I think up to 2 more, for a total of +3 -- but those only apply in the Incarnate Trials, not in other content. The Alpha level shift applies in all content.

Also, the level shift is associated with the particular Alpha ability you craft. If you unslot that ability (typically because you are switching to one of the other Alpha trees, like from Musculature to Spiritual), you will lose the level shift it gives you (although eventually you will be able to make a Tier 3 or 4 ability in the new tree and have the level shift when using it). Note that these Incarnate abilities can be plugged into their slot and pulled back out pretty much at whim (you just have to go without activating powers for a short period of time, so not in mid-fight) so they are not lost or anything if you decide to switch trees.

Each incarnate power has four levels.

One base power (Tier 1)

Two improved powers (Tier 2)

Four different powers even more improved (Tier 3, where the Alpha will have the level shift, and Lore and Destiny have their "Incarnate Shift" which is a level shift active only in Incarnate Trials)

And the two final powers (Tier 4, will also have any shifts the T3 have).

You craft them, and when you slot them, you can later slot others in their place without destroying the original power (crafting a higher level one will consume the previous one, however).

Also, Recommendation : Use this bind :

/bind I "Toggle Incarnate"

Helps you look at the crafting part of it real fast.

On the one hand, there are many builds that can farm at x8 without the level shift.
On the other hand, the level shift 'effectively' makes you 51 but you continue to earn rewards based on being level 50, so it really is very helpful.

Ok, well Ill get the Going Rogue expansion, but until then, will IO's be sufficient enough to get me able to farm at the x8 settings?

It should, yes. But that has more to do with the player behind the character than the amount you spend on IOs. Check out the Brute forums and see if there's a farming build for your powersets out there.

People have been farming for a lot longer than Going Rogue or IOs. You'll be fine with just IOs.

I farm on a Level 10 claws/fire brute slotted with Training Origins. If anyone tells you that you need anything other than a brain to farm, they're either lying, or doing it wrong.

If your only reason to get GR is to get a level shift for farming, I'd say don't do it. Once CoH: Freedom goes live GR will be included in all VIP accounts, so if you continue to pay your sub, you'll have access. However, if you want access to all the content and powersets that come with GR, I would consider it money well spent.

Well, if he pays he will get GR, but if he picks it up on sale before hand, he will also have a couple of extra slots he can unlock if he doesn't subscribe. They just had a $10.00 sale on Steam, I would bet they will have more before Freedom hits.
