New Earth/Fire dom...

So, I'm planning on levelling an Earth/Fire dom and I was wondering if there is anything I should know or any handy tips?

I've picked the combo because it looks to have a great balance between control, mitigation and damage output. Guess it's a case of opening a fight with stalagmites, earthquake or volcanic gasses, then popping fiery embrace and burning things down. Any powers not worth taking?

I imagine I'll go for fire mastery so I can unleash fiery embrace buffed fireballs.

Any comments or advice greatly received so I know what to let myself in for.

I don't have any specific comments, other than to say it's a great combo. I leveled one up into the high 30s, then set him aside because I got sucked into all the Incarnate stuff on a few other characters.

Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.

i got a awesome (but slightly squishy earth/fire dom) at 50 and 99% IOd

one power i would say is optional is the salt crystals (the sleep) as i did not want that on my build

the attacks flares and fire blast are kinda subjective, i did not slot flares at all and i completely skipped fire blast (with my rech being around 200% my normal attack chain is blaze fire ball and fire breath with a rain of fire thrown in somewhere), most mobs usually die within 1 attack chain while perma stunned from stalagmites

I have one I'm leveling. She's only 20 but I have two regrets already: taking Incinerate and maybe Stone Cages.

Incinerate is a great attack but I don't use it as much as I would like to just because Earth/Fire plays so well from Range, I don't see a reason. Fire Blast deals almost the same damage, has less rech and I find myself overkilling mobs because Incinerate is a DoT so I use Fire Blast or Flares before the DoT is over.

Stone Cages was a good pick for the REALLY low levels to help everyone hit but... Now that I have QuickSand (bigger -def), Earthquake and Stalagmites I might respec out of it. After all no containment for us, everything else has -def and it gets in the way of Earthquake. Anyone you have to pick one or another (or the ST immob but meh), so I'm sticking with the Cages I guess.

That's what I currently have planned for leveling (I picked resuscitate because I'm not going to have two LOTGs for manoeuvres and CJ or a lot of defence until epics, I plan to spec into a build with good def and permadom later):

I would keep Stone Cages.. it stops mobs from wandering around after hitting Stalagmites.. keep them nicely grouped for your fireball and rain of Fire..

Here is my guy as he is live..

I have both Fire/Earth/Fire and Earth/Fire/Fire, i like my fire/earth much more, able to slot for better s/l def and its not as squishy as my other dom, i took phase shift on both for running thru TF's (LGTF) and not getting hit and also for when i am gonna die, which rarely happens since i got rebirth for a nice heal...

If your stuck on earth/fire i recommend the fire mastery..great damage and i took the rez for the times that i get 2 shotted and cant get the phase off in time or its down. Was able to get 182% rech and 20 s/l def on the earth/fire/fire compared to 30 s/l def on the fire/earth/fire.

But the earth doms attacks do sound very nice with the rocky sounds, but i dont really care for the Location AOE hold compared to Fires PBAOE hold. longer animation and it seems to take longer to get them held, also earthquake is good for the slotting but i hardly ever have to use it when teaming..most will tell u to take it though, i did just for the slotting. The long animation time on it has gotten me killed b4.

Cosume is nice +end power, id skip combustion, quicksand, salt crystals, i skipped the pet but totally optional there for your play style

Heres my build

Any comments/suggestions regarding Ice Mastery on a Earth/Fire Dom? I'm mostly planning to take Sleet, Frozen Armor and Ice Storm. I'm not sure about Hoarfrost, it's a decent power but the recharge seems a bit long to make it useful. Hibernate is one of those powers that just doesn't work well for me, I tend to play to close to the edge to activate it in time (Oh, no need to Hibernate I can win this! *splat*).

I have a Earth/Storm/Fire Controller and while he's ok I find that I don't really enjoy playing Storm Summoning that much. Consequently I'm thinking of re-rolling him as either an Earth/Cold/Fire Controller or an Earth/Fire/Ice Dominator.

It looks like Ice Mastery should work out well with both Earth Control and Fiery Assault even if I will end up with a LOT of location target powers .

hoarfrost is not really worth it, hibernate is a better power to use than that

the other powers you are taking are good though

Your willing to pass up Fireball and Rain of Fire ?? I wouldn't give up that much AoE Damage not by a long shot.

The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.

If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

The character is an elementalist, and as such I really want powers to represent all four of the classical elements (water and air sort of get combined with powers like Sleet and Ice Storm). Additionally I want the powers associated with the element to tie into the general theme of the elements. I like Earth Control since it ties in well with Earth (solid and reliable, using terrain to hinder your foes). Fire I associate with rage and aggression so I want that for my primary attack powers. That means Air/Water as the third set.

In the case of a Controller that lends itself to Earth/Cold/Fire or Earth/Storm/Fire but for a Dominator it leads more towards Earth/Fire/Ice. The alternative combos of Ice/Stone/Fire or Earth/Ice/Fire just don't work as well thematically.

I found Hoarfrost quite useful on my Earth/Fire, adding another 400 or so hit points for the majority of the time. On top of softcapped smashing/lethal, it made a nice difference in survival.

Hibernate, on the other hand, I've always found difficult to leverage for survival. Though maybe it's just me. I could never getting the timing of when I needed it and usually ended up dead before it activated and the Untouchable kicked in.

I tried both on my Plant/Thorn/Ice dom. I found that I liked Hoarfrost better. As has been said, once you get into perma-dom levels of recharge, it's up fairly often, and provides a nice benefit most of the time. Hibernate was hard to use. But that is likely a playstyle thing, both can be good, so up to you. Both can take a doctored wounds set, so as somewhat interchangeable, at least in my builds.

I also wanted to comment, the only reason I would take Salt Crystals is for a cheap purple set. The sleep set is one of the cheapest purple sets out there. This only applies at 50 obviously.

ahhh cool I understand building around a concept.. I do that quite a bit myself..

You could also go Earth/Fire/Leviathan which gives you access to Water Spout and Hibernate.

But you give up the Ice Shield which is key if you are building for defense.

That's where I'm stuck right now on my Earth/Fire Dom (45). I can't decide if I want to build a soft capped S/L build or Earth/Fire/Fire for more AoE ridiculousness. Blah.

I contemplated that. However while Leviathan has one of the few actual water powers in the game it doesn't really have any Air powers. If the Dominator version had Arctic Breath instead of Bile Spray then I probably would go for it.

Here my Earth/fire dom, S/L soft cap, perma dom, 2 seconds off perma hasten. Only used 1 purple set the hold one so kinda cheap. I went mace cause I hate the ice shield so I had to sacrifice some aoe but I think it was worth it.

Aren't Water Spouts just tornados that move across and pick up water?

Bit more expensive... but go for both, we can have three builds.

A side note about Stone Cages. Get a stealth IO and go near a mob, use your pet to bunch them together safely. Once they are bunched, I throw down cages followed by Stalagmites, QS, then EQ. While the pet is doing his ST damage I fill in with your attacks.

As an Earth/Ice, I took Ice as my APP. I also have an Earth/Fire/Fire...same tactic.

Fair point. I'm still taking Ice Mastery though
