Ion or Void judgement?
For a Ax/wp build.
For concept reasons I am leaning a little more toward Ion, but I would like to hear from another brute that says it works for them. I am a little "concerned" about the chained-aoe thing as opposed to a straight pbaoe. Thanks |
That said, either one is tasty; the -Dmg debuff from Void makes it harder for any survivors to retaliate.

Mostly Pinnacle, with scattered alts on Liberty, Freedom, and Justice.
I had a great time playing with you!
My Mace/WP broot took Ion, and it is my favorite of the Judgments by far.
I love how it goes around and hits stuff that isn't neatly packed and isn't necessarily what I was fighting. I'll drag a group of baddies close enough to another group and just target someone from group 2 for Ion.
Most of the 2nd group goes down, and the ones that survive generally don't attack because I am already at the agro cap.

I've used Ion on my Elec/Elec Brute just fine; what is your "concern?"

For void, like any other pbaoe, each target within the radius gets a to-hit check up to the target maximum. So if I have 10 targets and a 90% chance of hitting, I'll 9 of them most of the time. [insert lecture on probability here]
For ion, like other chain aoes,... well I am not sure how they work. Do you just pick one target and they everything next to it has a chance to be affected? And so on until you either run out of targets or hit your cap?
Put another way-given 10 targets and a 90% to hit (I'm using that to make the math easy) which would hit more targets void, ion, or does it not matter?

Theyre both good, so take the one that you like/fits theme best. If you weren't thinking or caring for any theme and only worried about dps/fast/performance you'd already be judging them with FIRE!

I have Ion on my brute. It's good but it has a couple of problems the others don't:
If the initial target dies on the first contact, your chain dies before it has the chance to do anything
The long animation sometimes led to me corpse blasting when a teammate, and sometimes even my own damage aura, killed my target. Again, that prevents the chaining from going off.

I like Ion in trials, the bosses stay up long enough to always make them a viable target to bound Ion off of and the power will actually bonce quite far with the right spacing of targets.
On the other hand I went and made Pyro to replace it because I got so tire of having my targets die in any other type of content and wasting the power and it's long animation time.
Void's a nice middle ground and being as you live in the thick of things with a brute anyway it is easy to hit as many targets as are available. The -damage of the power is also nice.

I've used two Judgment powers so far: Ion for my Elec/Cold dominator and Pyronic for my SS/Fire brute as well as my Fire/Kin controller. My good friend runs a Brute with Void Judgment that I've seen quite a bit. For brutes and Tankers that can really draw a crowd around them it seems like a really great power. The radius seems larger than Pyronic, which makes up for the lack of range.
For the reasons stated above, I have a real love/hate relationship with Ionic Judgement. Yes, it does very well eliminating more spread-out groups, but you have to be very careful of your initial target. Usually I try and rush ahead a bit when using it so that the long animation can have a head start as the team approaches. Not rushing forward a LOT, granted. Just hopping over as the last couple of minions are being killed and people are getting reoriented.
...Now I want to try Cryonic.
Too many alts to list.
I'm a big fan of void, partially for the -dmg component (hard targets are usually the only things that survive a musc boosted void anyway) and partially since it is a PBAoE I don't have to worry about targeting it. Since brutes are usually surrounded anyway, it works out nicely.
Not that any of the others are any harder to use, just that void is the most fire and forget.
wow ladies just pick pyro and be done with it
I'll back Neogumbercules and the others on the issues with the original target of Ion dying being a pain. However, it does have utility the others don't. It is much better than Pyro or Void at widely spread out targets. Often I can get whole spawns when only one is visible and the rest are around corners or behind pillars both of which would keep them safe from Pyronic.
Pyronic is spectacular, and equal or better to Ion under virtually all other circumstances.
Cryonic pretty much sucks. but it looks pretty and is a thematic fit for the character who has it so I keep it.
Void is solid, I love that the damage type is lightly resisted, and the -Dam is not only high enough to be noticed, but it lasts a good long time too. It has a pretty large area of effect. And if you care about the visuals, pull back your camera and watch carefully. The spiraling tentacles of dark energy are subtle and awesome.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.
