Put in too many restrictions, and you won't get enough people willing to play in Premium mode. You want players to have some fun with Premium - enough to keep playing and buying features piecemeal - and also be drawn/tantalized by VIP.

Personally I don't know what is the best thing to do business-wise with global channels. If Premium players don't have access to global channels, they miss out on most of what the active players are doing now; both socially and with organizing activities.

If Premium players can access global channels, then that's one less (big) reason to be VIP.

Maybe like Des said, you'll be able to buy global channel access if you're Premium.

I am curious to see what they decide.
Here's the thing, though. How are global channels being open to Premium players really going to take anything from VIP status? I can completely understand gating more content, powersets, costumes, etc., under VIP status, and that's what VIP is going to do. We keep talking about being able to purchase stuff and get it in Premium mode all the time, but the devs don't have to do that for a lot of things, and can even limit that so people want to keep getting VIP status (not to mention the "free" points every month).

Better communication channels for players that are at Premium will make sure they have things to do with other players more easily, enticing them to play content that they hear the others talking about, or to get costumes and things those VIP people have. It also can keep players who need to go Premium for a bit interested in going back to VIP, rather than being annoyed that they can't keep up with things as well, which can easily draw them on to other games.

There's plenty going for making communication easier for non-VIP people... the main thing I can see against it is RMT, but that's an issue no matter what you do, and can be limited with this some by keeping it to Premium and higher for channel usage.

the actual reasons given in ustream chats was because of the pets, mm and controllers both have pet summons and pets are more server intensive, so they are limiting the pet sets available to theoretically help reduce server stress and essentially create less lag

Sorry, but the VEATS are worth it

Not seeing any info from a redname regarding globals and premiums, also can't tell if anyone has actually asked yet either. Closest to it, without going over (or even touching the subject):

Thinking of how to advantagize the prospect of a 2nd account; people paying for 2 accounts, IMO, are going to make out like bandits for the most part. I think. Those who haven't bought GR , but are subscribing, get a free boost.

I've already forgotten about most of you

Most active CoH players want access to global channels - hence it is a desirable feature. Personally I hope that Premium players have access because I think you lose too much without it. Still, in the end, NCSoft wants players to choose VIP over Premium. If a VIP player knows they'll lose global channel access if they let their subscription lapse, then that's one more incentive to keep paying that subscription.

Think of how many people with free accounts would have to buy access to trollers just to make a fire/kin. It's brilliant.
In that very long thread filled with delicious, tasty drama, it was said by some kind of redname that performance concerns are why trollers and MMs were restricted. I guess the pet spawning does matter enough to count.

Edit: Necro already posted it. And I answered before reading the whole thread. I dub myself forumzfailz.

Huh.. so if I am understanding this correctly ..
Seeing as I have an extra copy of Architect Edition, when i21 launches I could make myself a second account and give it AE access?
::finger pyramid:: Excellent.

Oh well, this shall be very interesting stuff!
(watch them now lock Fiery Aura behind bars because of how awesome it is .. or re-fearify Burn!)

It's going to be nice that I can get access to my 2nd account again. For likely no/a small cost (depends on how the vet things work with global tokens) I'll get at the 3-4 characters on there that I'd like to still be able to play.

yeah, my 2nd account would most likely shift to premium, depending on the restrictions. Main account will remain ViP.

They have a couple of price comparison points out for Paragon Points... sounds like you should be able to get a reasonable amount of stuff with 400 points a month. Things are looking good there, but I'm not happy with the news that Incarnate powers are grayed out for Premium people that bought Going Rogue, even though, yes, I know you're playing for free.

i was looking at that, if you noticed that aside from the 400 pts per month we get, we also get the free server transfer and free signature arcs which is another 1200 pts worth

so were getting around $20 in free stuff just staying subscribed, plus we can use those 400 pts however we want like to get costume sets from boosters, or more character slots for free as well

being a VIP will have some serious perks with it lol

My search-fu is lacking, provide links .. I wanna see
AND NO!
I am not going to the front page and looking for myself <.<

o.o they are now paying us to play their game? Interesting..
We earn Server Transfer ($10 value) and access to new stuff .. and those arcs ($5 value)
So, it is $10 per month earned .. and that one time of $5 all include for VIP .
Nifty

heres the offical post and details

were actually getting more than $10 per month

current subscription is $15 per month, and were going to get:
  • 400 paragon points ($5 value)
  • 1 free transfer ($10 value)
  • free signature story arcs ($5 value for each one thats out)

which is at least $20, so if you think about it, the devs are actually paying us $5 per month being a VIP (if thats how you want to think about it lol)

either way $20 of free stuff every month is really good deal

I like this business model, I was almost scared at first, but I really like it.
It's a good thing I just beat the Witcher II, I'll be in CoH a lot more, especially after w00tuesday.
Now if they would just get the game down to only three types of currency...
