Remember the Real Money Trading spammers? Trial accounts used to be able to send tells, use broadcast, and chat in global channels. They lowered the communication rights of trial accounts because of all the spam. This whole thing is just an upgrade of the current trial accounts, it's not a downgrade of anything really. Trial accounts are RIGHT NOW limited to local and team chat already; they're not losing anything.
I cannot say this loudly enough.

We already have a trial account system. This is a good way to make it more accessible and welcoming. The trial account system is only getting better. Stop with the doom.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts, with two thumbs up. Trial accounts bring more people in to the game. With a piss-poor advertising budget, word of mouth seems to be the best way this game gets new subscribers, or since returning vets can see what's changed without paying for anything, I'd expect to get more of them back as well.

The only money making game in the NCSOFT portfolio and they are mucking it up... Insanity. I fully expect the victory community as it stands today will move to the VIP server at that point. I mean seriously this entire thing sounds like a bad idea for the people that have been paying for YEARS!!! and it looks like new content will be pay to unlock from now on. so we will have to pay twice. Its just pissing people off.

Personally I'm glad I'll be testing GW2 soon and I can walk away knowing the best years of COX is behind me.

So... I should remember that and try to grin when I'm on a premium stint for awhile rather than VIP and trying to team? That helps me not at all...

Also, are you quoting with this bolded statement, too? I'm not crying doom, I just don't like the communication limitation. The new F2P stuff are supposed ways to play the game, not glorified trial accounts, and it's going to be much harder to team up if you're not on a VIP account with the current setup. In other words, a pain for new players or those that are wanting to use a premium account for awhile.

I'm not exactly sure how you are ever going to be rid of spammers no matter what you do, and I'd rather have communication tools for people that actually want to play the game. We co have ways to moderate and control communication channels, too, so it's not like players would be powerless if they let premium types use chat channels (I could see not allowing non-premium people... that would catch most spammers, I would think, as premium people would have an account and a record for the devs to follow).

If you keep up your subscription you won't have to pay for any content, just new shinies if you want them.

As for whether Victory will migrate to the VIP server, that remains to be seen. I don't see it happening right away at least, as there's nothing special about this new server except that it's restricted to VIPs.

Now that seems rather doomtastic. Payment models for MMOs are in a state of flux, and the current setup doesn't seem entirely different than what they have now if you want to pay a subscription. It's really not worth getting too worried about this before you see how it goes and we have more details.

Me, I'm staying on Victory. Maybe they'll let us swap all our characters easily to the VIP, but I doubt it... Zwill was saying it was a way to get the "brand new game experience" or something like that, so you can transfer to it probably, but now wholesale. My favorite characters are on Victory and it would take over a year of free rewards to get them over there. Plus, I LIKE Victory. Hopefully everyone else will stay as well.

It seems to me you did not actually read any of the literature or listen to the ustream. You will not have to "pay twice" for anything. If you contine with your subscription as it is now, you will actually earn points to get things FREE, and you can use those points to get whatever you want, you will not have to buy a costume pack to get 1 piece you want any longer. The only way you'd need to pay for extra stuff ala carte is if you decide you do not want to be a subscriber. And hey, if you stop paying the monthly fee, you deserve less stuff... it's pretty simple.

As for Victory going to the VIP server... I don't think so. We have a strong community here. I see people moving one or two characters there, but that's it. There is nothing special about this VIP server except that people on free accounts can't play there. Thus the only different is less people in local asking for teams or invites. If people asking for teams REALLY bothers people, they should play a single player game and not an MMORPG. (okay and no spamming for inf sites, but that's only really popular on Freedom in AE lol) With free transfers, friends who play on different servers will have an easier time playing together (if they both transferred to the VIP server) but again, that's not going to be the entire community. I don't think people who have spent years here and built up a SG and friends are going to leave for this... if they wanted to leave, they already have 14 other servers to choose from, and they'd be gone already.

After watching the ustream and having a lot of my questions answered, I say two thumbs up!

If you have a few months where you go premium, you are getting to play FOR FREE. Again FOR FREE. You might lose an easy way to communicate, yes I see this, but if you couldn't afford the subscription before... you would be not playing AT ALL. Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth!

I'm grading papers and I'm grumpy, but how is wanting better communication looking a gift horse in the mouth? I haven't said no one should pay anything to play CoX, or even that how they're laying out content with payments is bad. Since Premium players are going to be playing most of the same game VIP players are, it would make sense to let those people talk to other players more easily.

You're all acting like I am horrible for wanting players to be able to communicate and team more easily... that makes no sense at all.

*added*

Doh, sorry Chad. One good thing about this is I'll probably be able to get my wife to play the game. She's never thought she'd want to play enough to make a sub worth the payment, but for playing once or twice a month with me, this would probably be great for her.

Yes, I will agree with you, you are grumpy . Please note the .

No where in in my post did I say that you were horrible. I simply said that complaining about something that is FREE that you have to do no work to get, versus having NOTHING is (in my opinion) looking in a gift horse in the mouth. I would think that you or anyone who has occasionally like their sub lapse (for financial reasons) would be doing cartwheels that they will never have to stop playing again for that reason.

I totally understand the reasoning behind not giving Premium too much, if they do, there is no reason to go VIP. And from a business standpoint... that is their goal for everyone to go Premium then VIP.

Now, I will give you a point in your favor that you said you are not crying doom. And I will also give you a cookie and hope that it will help ease the grumpiness <3

My main concern is what this will do to the player base and supergroups.

All my storage and people are on Victory.

No, I think the free aspect is nice, as there have been plenty of stretches where I had to let my account lapse: I've even stated that I am going to be taking advantage of the game in that sense (I've thought about checking out LOTRO, to be honest, but I don't have that much gaming time). So there is no asking for too much.

Being able to communicate with players checking out the game is a good thing. If I were new and coming in and could never find a team (since I didn't know about or could use channels), I'd think the game isn't worth playing. And if I'm doing F2P and not buying goodies or going VIP because I don't enjoy the game while playing F2P, that's a bad thing as well.

I understand the logic of segregating some things for VIP players... but adequate communication tools is not one of the things needed. More content, more powers, more access, etc., is what is going to make VIP enticing, and they already have that. Cutting out communication tools is a bad idea.

I'm already concerned enough about all the people posting about "F2P player cooties." I'm sure we're all better than that on Victory, but segregating players and making it harder to communicate are not things I would look forward to with this new system.

And thank you for the cookie.

*added*

Hamster, in case you're not joking, UStream is that new video channel thing the devs are using for some reason to communicate with players. Not sure why official videos, posts, etc., on the website (tied in with other types of media) aren't good enough, but whatever. I miss out on tons since I don't sit on Twitter and Facebook. Meh.

Judging by the comments being made, I have to wonder if everyone understood that if you are currently subscribed now, you will never fall into Play For Free status? If you chose to stop "subscribing/paying" you fall into Premium Player status. In other words, you retains 80-90% of what you have now...with out paying for it. Anything you do lose, can be recouped by a single, one time fee; after which you keep it even though you don't pay a monthly fee.

....sorry, not seeing any restrictions here what so ever.

I was wondering about this. Someone should crunch the numbers to see if going Premium, and then buying back everything you had as a subscriber makes more sense over time than staying subscribed. If someone doesn't really care about the free Paragon Points, then it probably does make more sense to go Premium.

Look at this way, if you bought most of the packs that came out, you are WAY better off staying subscribed. If you did not really dig the packs and have 8 alts you never play, Premium is the way to go.

Remember folks, it isn't just the upstanding citizens of Victory that will be able to move to the VIP server. All the subscribers currently on Freedom can go there, too.

Plus the non-VIP folks will have such limited communication options that you won't even notice them around unless you actively seek them out.

What gripes me the most for Premium accounts is the loss of 10 character slots on one server and ALL of them on the rest.

However, if you had no intention of stopping payment, VIP accounts is pure win.
Even if you DO quit paying and downgrade to Premium its still loads better than NOT HAVING AN ACTIVE ACCOUNT, which is how it is currently.

oops... mental capslock off.

The VIP server is only there for people who are so damn scared they may see RMT spam in local chat that they feel the need to flee into their gated communities.

You need to let new players team with existing players if they are to have any hope of actually becoming a veteran player in the future. Complaints about Winter Lord and AE Babies? You are talking very high probabilities of having a permanent section of the player base emulate these reviled banes to the server. You can't learn about the game and proper behavior/mission etiquette/slotting if you have no one around you to learn it from.

I'm not going anywhere, and I hope no one else from Vic flees for the "promised land" of the VIP server either. Ignoring a given player is such a minor expenditure of time I can't believe it would even register on someone's annoyance meter.

Granted it could come in the future, but for the moment I don't see it happening.
