Building a gamebreaker. I need advice.

I feel I've mastered the realm of melee ATs. I've made a Tanker build that can stand up to Lord Recluse without any outside buffs, I've made a Scrapper that could solo AVs inspirationless before the Incarnate system (with incarnate powers, he can solo a pylon, and AVs are a joke). I'm no stranger to non-melee, but I'm far from an expert on it, so here's my question:

I want something that can wreck house solo whether it's against a large number of mobs or an AV (or maybe even two AVs). I've got two powersets in mind for this: an Ill/Rad/Psi controller, or a Mind/Psi/Psi Dominator. Which of these would be better? Is there a powerset combo that I'm missing that might work better than one of the two I've listed?

Bots/Traps mastermind. Can solo just about anything in the game.

Ill/Rad or Bots/Traps come to mind.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

I, for one, am dazzled by the humility you show.

Ill/Rad and Mind/Psi share one thing in common, they're both go-to TF soloers. They both excel at what they do, but the problem is outside of those situations where they shine, other ATs can be much stronger. There just isn't a character which is the best at AV/GM/TF soloing which is also best at the other stuff (nuking spawns, speeding missions etc)

Fire/Traps comes close. Very capable AV/GM soloer, capable of soloing some TFs, but not as good at it as an Ill Troller or Mind Permadom. For that, they have much better AoE damage.

Something else to consider would be Ill/Cold instead of Ill/Rad. Ill/Cold will be tougher to get perma-PA on because you don't have AM, but I feel its a stronger combination once you get there. Sleet is easier to leverage as an AoE -res debuff than EF is and Heat Loss is a truly fantastic power. With the Ice Mastery pool you can softcap your s/l and pick up 2 additional AoEs.

I've got an Ill/Cold and that's the route I went. Solos AVs/GMs/whatever like a beast, but where I felt it was weak was when I couldn't fully leverage my pets. I needed something to boost my direct damage output, and Ice Mastery fits that bill nicely.

Edit: Ooh yeah, or Bots/Traps. Even more reliant on pets than Ill/Cold, but has good AoE and good hard target soloing ability.

I would say Ill/Cold on the assumption that as the bar raises soloing a "standard" AV will become less and less of an ideal. The AVs in the raids are more or less immune to control powers. Illusion is the only control set worth anything against them (the powers are useful for other stuff but not dealing with the AV). I have no idea how /Traps Masterminds do in raids but my guess the pets get obliterated.

You know, I actually have a Bots/Traps MM, but he's still in the 40s, and I'd never think of him as an AV soloer, let alone a living destruction machine. Maybe I need to learn MMs better.

I understand how to use bodyguard, but I'm not great at knowing when to use it. And I get that Traps' forte is setting up a zone of influence where you have the advantage, but again I'm not sure how to actually put it into action.

I've seen an ILL/Rad Controller do many impressive things, like solo basically every GM in the game, they're strong and can be built to take on almost any High-Regen enemy.

Since you like soloing Av's I figured that this would help, it's so strong because if you can reduce rech of your illusions as much as possible, they'll hold ALL the aggro...so u take nearly no damage and you can focus on debuffs.

Not really, Traps forte is slamming into enemies and coming out the other side unscathed. It's an extremely offensive buff/debuff set.

If you're going to do a mind/psi dom, go for //ice instead of //psi. Sleet will increase your damage and goes nicely with the -regen in drain psyche.

Yeah, my bots/traps not only solos AVs, but GMs. Even the ones in the Hive. Before incarnates, he could do some missions on +4/x8. If you want something that's completely broken, bots/traps is your way to go.

It's just... not exactly easy to be that good with one.

Illusion/Radiation is, of course, well known for being effective solo against AVs as well as contributing to teams. You may want to think about an APP other than Psi, especially with the Clarion Destiny power available. The Fire and Ice APPs do more damage and, more importantly, do a different type of damage. A lot of foes in the late game are Psi-resistant, and the different damage type makes a huge difference when taking those guys down. If you don't need the mez protection from Indomidible Will, and you shouldn't if your PA are drawing the aggro, then other APP sets will help you more.

As explained in my Ill/Rad guide (linked in my sig), I prefer the Fire APP but agree that Ice is also a great choice. I used Ice on my Ill/Cold.

On Ill/Rad vs. Ill/Cold -- both are outstanding characters and play surprisingly differently. Both sets have AoE debuffs to make PA more effective. Both sets have AoE slow, -Recharge and -Regen, -Resistance, -Damage and -Defense.
(a) Ill/Cold has stronger debuffs on AVs and will help take them down faster. Two of the debuffs are single-target, making Cold not as effective against large groups. Two of your debuffs (Benumb and Heat Loss) are on long timers so they won't be up for every group, including your single target -Damage power. The Cold set is late blooming, so it is more of a struggle in low levels. Cold's Defense shields are fantastic . . . except that so many characters are soft-capped and the shields accomplish nothing for them. Your only heal power, Frostworks, is the most skippable power in the set and doesn't work on you. Cold Domination also does not have a ToHit Debuff power and has nothing that can be used as a "panic button" power. However, Sleet is great and provides some partial control (Slow and Knockdown) as well as great debuffs -- once you can get it at 35.

For TFs against tough single targets, like a lot of AVs, Ill/Cold is a great choice. Without question, it helps AVs go down faster than Ill/Rad.

(b) Ill/Rad is a fairly early blooming set with a nice general purpose set of powers. With an AoE Team Heal and Team buff (AM), it always helps to make teams better, and yet these powers work on yourself for playing solo. Ill/Rad is cheaper to make Perma-PA since AM provides a 30% Recharge. The Debuffs are not as strong as Cold, but are foe-targetted AoE toggles which are up for every group and last as long as the anchor does -- these provide -ToHit, -Defense, -Damage and -Resistance. The only ally-only powers, Mutation and Fallout, are two of the three most skippable powers in the set. Radiation has a one of the best AoE Holds in the game in EM Pulse, which makes a pretty good "panic button" power that can be combined with Flash to hold bosses.

So I would say that Ill/Rad is more flexible and general purpose than Ill/Cold, better for solo but not quite as fast to bring down AVs.

Thanks for the advice, people. I've decided to go with Ill/Rad. I know there are better APPs than Psi for making a gamebreaker, but the character is supposed to be psychic and completely immune to mental attacks, so it's necessary for concept.

This is what did it for me.

And Silas's Corrupter guides have me thinking about rolling a Corr now.

Ill/Rad solo's GMs and AVs so easily it's kinda boring after the first few: Cast pets, cast anchors, LR, blast blast blast. Recast pets and LR as available. I tend to get a little overwhelmed by more than one x8 group, though, and sometimes my pets cannot save me from a difficult ambush situation.

I'll add fire/mm and rad/mm blasters to the list of recommendations. Rad/MM is especially fun for me as it spends most of it's time in melee (2 PBAoEs, one ranged AoE that usually gets fired point blank with the other two). I've solo'd GMs on mine, it goes a bit quicker than on my ill/rad because dps is a lot higher. It's more dangerous, and I die more often. Where it really shines is buried under piles of bad guys- 115 hp/s regen from DP and capped defense, plus a ton of AoE dmg (sort of a weak spot for ill/ trollers) make it lots of fun to play. Destiny Clarion keeps it from getting mezzed and dropping toggles, which was its most frequent cause of death previously. Haven't tried solo'ing Lusca, but another player has done it on his fire/mm.

Son/Rad Corr can be very effective. I've never pushed mine to be a gamebreaker... I imagine it could.

Illusion/rad is quite good, but it's strength is against hard target, so it's not as good against crowds. Mind/Psi dominators are very well rounded, excelling at mass and single target control. They will do less single target damage, but go through crowds more easily and safely.

Choose yer poison.

Other considerations:

Crab spiders. On SO's, they are incredibly strong. Throw in some inventions, and they become even better. Pets, buffs, debuffs, AoE's galore.

Fire/Fire/fire dominator: Expensive as all get out to do it, but this can become embarrassingly high damage. It starts of with sort of weak control, but with enough recharge flashfire will always be there, and the embrace of fire being up frequently for blaze, rain of fire, and so on is crazy.

I find these two statements to be rather strange, seeing as pylons are several times easier than most AVs.
