So Jonah Hex
Come on, don't be shy. Tell us what you really think.
So you either missed, or were oblivious to the vast amount of hate and bad reviews the film got when it came out.
On this board, I'm usually a proponent for most films (especially CBMs), but this was one movie, I couldn't really say anything good about. I mean, they made a tent explode...a tent, and for no reason other than to make it explode. Even Bay was going WTF!?

I kinda wish I had missed it entirely, this is one of those times I wish my brain could un-see something.

Some one please tell me the comics weren't that bad. Were Josh Brolin and John Malcovitch trying to see who's career would nose dive harder from that flick? |
And neither Malkovitch or Brolin will be hurt by the movie. For actors with the resumes they have, they can afford to make a bad choice or two without breaking their careers.
(Don't know as I can say they same for Megan Fox, though. I guess as long as she is cute and doesn't break down like Lindsay Lohan, people will still hire her)
New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):

Sparks & Steel (level 5-20 Heroic arc)
and
So you want to join the Skulls? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
If you ignore the fact that it came from a comic book, I didn't think the movie was all that bad. It was a fun little movie. Nonsensical, yes. Rushed at many points, yes. But still a fun movie. It doesn't share much with its source material, other than the name, but still.

That movie sucks more than a straw....
So WTF was that movie? Seriously who thought that was a good idea to put on film, then print thousands of copies and put it in theatres?
Some one please tell me the comics weren't that bad. Were Josh Brolin and John Malcovitch trying to see who's career would nose dive harder from that flick? I mean hell, that movie made "Wild Wild West" look like a stunning, epic depiction of the gritty west. The only redeeming thing I can say about that movie was I watched it on an HBO account I'm not paying for, and I watched it while I played CoH, so I didn't waste any money and it wasn't a complete waste of 2 hours. Ohh wow was that movie bad. Horrible dialogue, horrible writing, what was with that weird near-death quasi flash forward later turned into a hallucinogenic flash back. Hey it's the final fight of the film, but not really, and now were going to flash back to it like it was the last meeting of these two, except it wasn't he was just on way too much peyote... You know it's a bad movie when Megan Fox's "acting" didn't make it any worse. |

Which doesn't change the fact that it was a terrible, terrible movie.
Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...
I don't know, I found the movie enjoyable as long as I ignored Hex was based on comics, the supernatural angle to him was actually interesting, plus Megan Fox is such good eye candy. And it was closer to the comics than Catwoman was( which is to say it wasn't at all, although Halle Berry is also good eye candy), and wasn't as painful as watching Shumacher's(sp) take on Batman
The Same can be said about the Green Hornet, I watch the old tv so and love it and other stuff about it is great however. Now the Movie came out and the main Character is dumb as hell, the Whole Movie was an Joke, I think some stuff should not be made into movies.
|
Look at the Batman and Robin Movie. that thing was horrible and some one watching that might think Batman shouldn't be made into a movie. Then look at Batman Begins or TDK, obviously it works if it's done well.
Jonah Hex and Green Hornet were not done well. Seth Rogen had no business writing part of Green Hornet, it's not his kind of material.

I've not read any of the current Jonah Hex series, but I caught the movie on HBO (where bad movies go to die). I have read the three Lansdale/Truman/Glansman mini-series, all of which were pretty awesome.
The Good --
1) Josh Brolin as Hex.
2) There is no number 2.
The Bad --
1) Hey, let's make a character known for being a bounty hunter in the Wild West and we'll set most of it in...Baltimore.
2) Megan Fox -- girl can NOT act and she seemed thrown in there as the "hot" star that needed to be in every movie.
3) I just don't see Hex working with the U.S. Government regarding anything.
4) The whole "talking to dead people" thing was pretty dumb. I know the comics (especially the Lansdale mini-series) always had a bit of weirdness to them, but this was a bit much.
The Ugly --
1) They recycled the plot of "Wild, Wild West," which had to be, up until "Jonah Hex" was released, one of the greatest cinematic travesties ever filmed. Really? I mean, REALLY? They only thing missing was a giant, robotic spider.
2) They spent $85 million on this garbage.
I could have pooped out a script better than this for a movie that would have cost a fraction of that budget to make.
Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!
Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.
Eh it was ok, not great. I simply took my disbelief and tossed it off a cliff and forgot all about suspending it. Then I sat back with a drink and some popcorn and watch guns fire, and things blow up.
It was adequate from that point of view and it doesn't hurt that I really haven't seen or read any of the jonah hex comics.
It wasn't a good movie, don't get me wrong but it wasn't a horrible movie either. There are really really bad movies out there and this one wasn't one of them. I generally get bad B horror movies and sci fi movies on netflix in hopes of catching the occasional gem and I'll rate this one as an eh... not horrible, not good but not horrible.

The opening intro where they talk about his becoming undead and chasing down Turnbull, finding out he died in a fire. That could have been it's own movie for one thing, and the way they did it left no doubt in my mind that the big bad wasn't dead. Yet they seemed to rely heavily on the surprise of the man still being alive.
Also, they start the movie so quickly that his betrayal of his friends for the sake of doing the right thing, and the murder of his family, meant nothing to the viewer. It all happened in under 5 minutes before the viewer could give a damn about the protagonist.
The rest of the writing was horrible, many of the scenes accomplished nothing except filler, the acting was wooden and there was no redeeming feature to the movie. I won't say it had no plot, but the plot it had was assinine at best. They had some sort of 1860s nuke shot out of a cannon? What the hell was that..
The movie was terrible, just terrible. I never read a Jonah Hex comic, I'm not mad that they destroyed the methos or what ever, (but I'd be dollars to donuts they did.) But the movie was terrible.

Ice Wall there were flashes of brilliance showing that a fairly decent fun film was screaming in agony trying to escape from the film and be born. Pity, clearly there were elements of a much better movie in there but they got killed and strangled by what was put on the screen.

There's a running gag that Lansdale uses where people ask Hex about his scar, and he has a different answer for them each time ("Bit my cheek eatin'", "Cut myself shavin,'" etc.) There was a moment of that in the movie, but nothing more.
Here's what I would have done:
1) Open the movie at Gettysburg and mess with Hex's origin a bit. You can even put Turnbull in this scene and show how Hex got his scars. This would probably be the most expensive part of the movie (big battle scene -- Pickett's Charge).
2) Flash forward 5 years later and adapt "Two Gun Mojo" and fleshing things out a bit for run time. Basically, the story would pick up with Hex, now a bounty hunter, being dragged to his own hanging behind some horses. It's a great story that gets weird once he encounters Doc Cross.
