I don't know how many of you have done this before, but I came up with a costume I really like and decided I wanted to play yet another scrapper just for that reason alone. I've already taken /shield to 50 twice, though I've never played BS before. Anyway, I just wanted to share my altitis with the world.

Anyone have any experience with BS/Shield out there?

It's the most fun I've had leveling any toon to 50. Didn't IO out when I got there, as I already had plenty of toons that could do everything an IO'd Broad Sword/Shield could do, but it was great fun. I can't really even point to what made it fun. It just was. Everything just came together with that toon, even if it wasn't ever really best at any one particular thing.

I actually have two BS/SD characters with identical builds! I enjoy them both because of their character's theme. BS/SD is really fun and Against All Odds really helps with that CRUNCH! effect that Broadsword has.

One application of Parry will get you to the Incarnate softcap with Melee, so if you're fighting someone like Marauder you'll be set for most of his attacks against you. The build doesn't even have any Defense IOs in Parry either!

A great thing about Body Mastery + Shield Defense is that you can use Conserve Power to mitigate the 60% Endurance crash of One with the Shield. No reliance with Inspirations on that part! All of the benefits, none of the calories.

BA; I know you've posted those screenies before, but those are two very sweet looking costumes you got there.

As far as the making a costume and then wanting to play it, yeah sitting on a couple of those at the moment. Not sure what to do with them though. Heh.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Really got me motivated!

I have definitely played characters specifically because of their bios and/or costumes. Even when that causes me to repeat powersets and such. Sooo, I don't think that is at all weird.

I always have to like the background idea, costume, playstyle or ideally all three of a character before I'll take it to 50.

(a side effect of this is that my characters spend 95% of their time in their initial starting costume since I make my mind up on a character at level 21, a holdover of 'if I can't hack it with slotted stamina on this toon I'm not going to take it any further')

To me, if you're playing a toon just because 'the numbers say it'll be the best ever' then you're doing it wrong. I'm not going to try and stop anyone doing that if it's what floats their boat, but it's not for me.

I pick a powerset because it's cool and I don't have one. Then I usually pick a second powerset to go with it based on good or interesting synergy. Then I make a costume. Then I change it. If I don't have a costume I like, I don't want to play the character.

And when did they fix patterns on shields? Incidentally, I picked shields because it was cool and I didn't have one. Then I found out it was the best evar.

I recently made a prestiege drone to help a very small SG. The random costume button threw out such a nice look that, instead of deleting it, I tweaked it after it got a cape and aura and am adding it to my Alts. Doesn't hurt that it was able to PL level itself after getting SO's.

Isn't that just called "leveling"?

I have three level 50 MA/WP scrappers, but I wouldn't have the third one if I hadn't come up with a look and name that I liked. The character started out as Nina Ballerina on Freedom, but then I liked that character concept so much that I made a Nina Ballerina on Virtue and leveled her to 50. Later I completely remade the Freedom character into someone different and liked the new name/look enough to play the same set to 50 a third time. ^_^

Different strokes and all that, but for me leveling is doing normal gameplay i.e. missions, streetsweeping, teams, TFs, whatever ; whereas powerleveling is maximising the path taken to gain the maximum exp in the minimum amount of time (which in this game would often involve doing the same mission over and over), with some kind of efficiency at it implied.

The first path tends to take dozens of hours, the second path tends to take hours - hence the "power" part.
