Server Downtimes

Ever since the EU servers were moved to the US, we've had to suffer having our servers taken down for patch releases etc during the height of our prime time. It's NEVER the US servers which are scheduled in their prime time, always ours.

This is now getting extremely irritating, especially with the hotfix due today. I mean, seriously, 8pm to 10pm UK time? for a lot of people, that's their evening's play gone.

Now, I fully understand that patches have to happen, and that they need to be done during the devs working hours, but 8pm is about 12pm PST, so why can't the devs just patch in their morning instead? Seriously... if you need pre-patch tinkering time before taking down the servers, do that the day BEFORE, then do the publish first thing the next day, 8 or 9am local time. That equates to roughly 5-6pm UK time, right when people are getting home from work, or sitting down to their dinner. It's also about right for most EU folks dinner time, too.

At least then, you still have all the devs there, and NO ONE's prime time is ruined by the patches.

Having had to deal with 4 PM to 6 PM downtime for the past seven years, I sympathise with your plight. It's not a lot of fun.

Prime time on a Friday night is no fun, it is sometimes unavoidable, and if I weren't at work during this downtime I would be pretty upset.
I do feel for you all.

see you on the other side.

Sorry FFM but our Aussie brethren have been having their prime time gaming hours disrupted by server downtime for 7 years. Please remember that the game is played all around the world so it's always someones prime time hours. It just so happens that it's your turn now.

It's a slap in the european faces,... again. Yesterdays regular downtime was pasted, why not patching it there. I was never upset about the scheduled down times but this is crap.

But it's okay to slap the Aussie players in the face.

Probably because the patch wasn't ready then, hmm? They don't materialize out of thin air you know. No, you're right. I bet it was all good to go yesterday, but they held it back just so they could throw a prime time downtime in our face just at the last minute! Our devs are evil like that.

I'm glad that they decide to add a stability patch before the weekend. Lots of people are having problems with disconnects and crashed. If you can't put yourself past that, you're a selfish *** as far as I'm concerned.

^ Actually, yes.. It almost certainly WAS ready yesterday or they wouldn't have posted that they'd be patching today, as they wouldn't have known it would BE ready. These things have to be tested and passed by QA before released, you know.

So yeah, they COULD have done the patch first thing this morning, IMO. But they probably thought that might not be enough notice, so end up doing it in prime time. Genius.

Ah, they enjoy that sort of roughhousing.

It does render yesterdays "No downtime for maintenance, aren't we great" thread a bit of a joke. If you're going to labour the point that you've saved some middle-of-the-day downtime it's best not to then force prime time downtime the day after.

I just want to say that the attitude of "It sucked for me, so now that it sucks for you I'm going to gloat." does nothing but breed even more unnecessary contempt over what is already an annoying situation. I've been dealing with mid-day patches since the game began. My very fist play session ended with me being forcibly disconnected from the server at 2 PM, no more than an hour after I first logged in.

I prefer to sympathise with these inconveniences, rather than mock and belittle them.

I think the only fair way to do it, is to set the downtimes to times suitable for the region the servers, serve.

I'd be all for AU getting their own Oceana servers.

Someone will be inconvenienced in whichever timeframe they decide to bring down the servers. As someone who lives in the +8 GMT time zone, I've had to put up with server down times that take place from 7pm to 9pm or thereabouts (due to US daylight savings), all the years of playing this game.

Surely, a server downtime taking place during Europe's prime time once in a while isn't such a big deal when taken in perspective.

I'm surprised anyone still uses that phrase seriously after all the mockery it gets here

When I read that line I actually thought his post was going to be sarcasm.

Thing is, once we go all Server List Mergey, you have to do the work at the same time on all servers otherwise it doesn't work

Sure it does. Individual servers can be up and down in the list without affecting others, no problem. Besides, the EU servers are already located in the US datacentre.

Ok, let me rephrase that

Statements like this, particularly where you EMPHASIZE part of it, lose their impact when you are WRONG. Unless by "NEVER" you exclude last Friday, when the servers were taken down for emergency maintenance during USA prime time.

Umm, yeah. Servers were down last week during US prime time. You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake.

No.
Players pay subscription money.
Players facing downtime in prime time get annoyed.
Most players are in the US.
Thus patching in US prime time is not wise.

Pretty much, if they'd have a world map showing income per region where higher income would be indicated by a brighter color the US would be all white and Europe would be darkish gray.
Downtime is put in the timezone of the darkness, in that case.
That's business.

They don't always have the choice, but when you do you gotta do what's good for business.

Like, yeah Bob, I know. How about maybe they only finalized the build late last night or even this morning, hmm?

If we could wait for this maintenance we would. The fixes that are going in are actually very important fixes to several mapserver crash issues which we felt to be important enough to get to live before the weekend. Obviously the time slot isn't ideal for the EU Community, and we did everything we could to get it earlier in the day (ideal would have been during our normal maintenance window starting at 5 AM PDT).
But anyway, apparently they took the servers down two hours early in order to bring them back up earlier. So yey, everyone wins.

Of course people are going to complain about that now ...
