Another "Enough Praetoria, Already" thread?

I'm probably looking a gift horse in the mouth here, but how many others besides me are just going to flat out not bother with the Lore pets, not because they generally don't like pets but because the Praetorian-NPC nature of those pets clashes with their character concept? Because don't get me wrong, I like pets just fine - my four Masterminds, two Dominators, and five Controllers including one that uses Illusions are somewhat telling. I just feel like they'd be a little immersion-breaking on a lot of my characters, especially the ones who are supposed to be connected to other NPC villain groups (the exceptions being my Meat Doctor character and two of my Menders, who will make perfect sense with salvaged Clockwork allies, and one of my Dominators, who's all about the mind control).

I guess I could think up IC reasons for most of the otherwise-odd ones, but that's a tall order for some of the more magically oriented and otherworldly characters, you know? Nordic frost giants, sentient black holes, ancient Anglo-Saxon revenants, genies, malevolent hurricane spirits, Soldiers of Rularuu, and Andrew Jackson don't seem like they'd be so easy to reconcile with the whole having-a-Praetorian-buddy thing.

Or maybe I'm just grumpy because with all the time this patch is taking to download, I won't get to play today. I dunno. I wish I could just give the Seers a Wisp skin... I don't care if their powersets don't match perfectly.

Word to the wise: Unlock the Tier 3 for the trial level shift, and just never use the pet. You'll be missing out on a free level if you don't.

Good idea. I never thought of that.

Keep in mind that we're going to be expanding/diversifying the Lore slot, as confirmed by Mr. Black Scorpion in the UStream dev chat. It definitely doesn't hurt to at least get started on unlocking it and working your way up.

I had the same conundrum with three of my toons (my main can explain away the Seers rather easily) so I figured I'd just grab the level shifter and only bust out the pet if I'm in a bind solo. Honestly, the Warworks/IDF pets will probably make taking on tough EBs/AVs much easier considering that the tier 4's will give you dedicated support if you go Radial. Again, take them and reap the level shift. If you're in a nasty situation, summon up and go to town.

Interesting. I'm assuming, in order to "switch" to the new "expansions" we'll need to break down our currents, since I'm sure aesthetic/utility reasons for wanting the new pets are just that--wants?

What I mean to ask is, if we unlock some IDF and then you folks release, say, Rularuu as Lore pets, there probably won't be an option to "make the change to the new stuff", right? Just break down and rebuild?

Another word: screw concept. A combination of a common pet and a Rare other slot lets that pet do 90 DPS.

I must have missed that. It certainly makes me happy to hear - seriously I would just about explode if I could match my Lore pets to my character's history.

It would have been nice if we could customize the look of our pet. I don't think I am too into any CoH pet.

You must not be one of those people who does things like skipping Lift on your Gravity controller because you've decided your powers are temporally-based and can't find a good explanation for how that could fling someone into the air, or playing a Forcefields/Electric defender to his mid thirties before rerolling not because he was terrible, but because Kinetics actually works just as well if not better for a guy who's supposed to be a time traveler.

Yeah, I did the same on my time traveling Grav contoller. Stopping people? No prob. Lifting them in the air and now its... um... that just doesn't fit with the concept.

The power is broken at the conceptual level. Short of doing it over (won't happen) any future changes fall into the "gluing feathers on a rat" catagory.

Just like giving you anything you want is pearls to swine, right?

Your point? Yeah, I didn't take Crippling Axe Kick until it got the alternate animation either. Some things are just too fugly to use, and too time-consuming to get just for the level shift and never use.

Screw concept, screw the game. I can assure you, I'm not here for the graphics and I'm definitely not here for the DPS. If it weren't for concept, I'd have jumped ship six years ago. Only thing keeping me here - and I mean that quite seriously - is that this is the only game where I can play MY characters as I envisioned them and I designed them in accordance to MY preferences and MY concepts. At least it's the only such game that doesn't suck. Yet.

In the meantime, I think the offered explanation for Lore is pretty solid. You've already spent ages fighting Praetorians, and this is just a reflection of an ability to summon a reflection of your foe. Alternatively, the IDF isn't a horrible special ops team, clockwork can stand in for just about any sort of android/robot companion. Seers are a bit tricky although it's not like 'people with psychic powers' is unknown on Primal; the main difference is the floaty head-covering bit. Since we can colorize Incarnate powers, perhaps you could color them red and call them Fortunatas.

Your use of the word "reflection" just justified my Rularuu character's Lore pets. How did I not think of that?

Personally, I'd like to see either a new Mastermind set that was IDF-style soldiers from the future, or otherwise see customization for Mercs to use models similar to that. The only futuristic set we currently have is Bots, and those get really old, really fast once you've used them on a bunch of characters.

Speaking of the IDF, what I wouldn't give to have customization options for Assault Rifle that use those Heavy backpacks with the guns and the belts and them missiles instead of the omnigun and the other stock prop models. Tech issues, I know, but I'd still like to see it.
