I can't stress this enough: the function call CoH is currently trying to use is not present in Windows XP SP2.

The documentation of the offending function can be found here: GetLogicalProcessorInformation Function (Windows)

Notice the Requirements specifications at the bottom:

I assume the new updater allows interrupted downloads (it better or I'm SOL).

At least before I could get the bulk of the patch over a couple of weeks and only have to deal with a 30-40MB patch on release day.

C'est la vie.
Yes, the Launcher does allow for interrupted downloads.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong (I'm not allergic to being wrong ). I'm still going to wait until tomorrow before installing SP3. I never installed it in the first place because it was superfluous considering what my personal computer gets used for, and SP2 users still receive security updates.

Anyone who doesn't want to install SP3 using Windows Update (whatever your reasons may be) can simply go here to download it and install it manually. This area of the Microsoft website is just offering a manual download and will not ask to scan your computer first. Feel free to ignore the bit at the bottom that dissuades single-computer users from the manual install. That bit is there solely to persuade users to visit Windows Update. Alternatively, you may go here if you want to download a CD image file to burn to disc.

Cas,

You can STILL get authorized OEM copies of XP. They're just not in normal channels any longer.

Granted, you're going to have to reinstall your OS to do so, but...

does it say anything that i already have the ncsoft launcher installed and have been running CoX from it for weeks?

i mean, given my past experience, i'm going to wait and see. if i have to figure this out, at least i can count on threads like this to give me ideas and options.

I want to chime in on the question of "Why illegal?"

I work as tech support for a university here. We have "Professional Edition" copies of Windows XP and Windows 7 enough to cover all work computers, as those work off a multi-use key. About every other time I sit down to service somebody's work computer, I run into pirated software, be it operating system, anti-virus software, system optimizers and so forth. Most of the time these date back to three, four, five years ago to people who no longer work with us, who've installed this crap on their machines and them passed them down to other people who are not computer-savvy enough to know better.

Part of the problem is irresponsible people. I can't tell you how many times I've yelled at my co-workers for having downloaded illegal torrents of software we have perfectly licensed, that I could have legally put on their machines within the span of a few minutes. Failing that, how many people will download torrents for paid software that perfectly free alternatives exist to that aren't really any worse.

So, yeah, it's not hard for me to see why someone might have ended up with an illegal copy of Windows XP and never noticed. Those tend to have auto-updates disabled on them, so a not-too-savvy user may never even realise his or her system is not updating. Or, worse still, said computer could be behind a proxy, and Windows Update sucks for that. Part of its communications fail to take proxy settings into account.

I do know there are options for solving said problem, but I also know discussing them is probably against the rules.

The inevitable thread starts. This is (mostly?) solved by updating to SP3?

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. So- if we cant for whatever reason update to SP3, we can no longer play CoH, due to patch content requiring SP3? thats lovely, account cancellation here i come.

Not for nothing, but a couple of years ago I purchased an OEM 64 bit version of XP from New Egg, according to Microsoft it is not "genuine" and it won't update either. That was and will be my last Windows based machine. I'd rather pay the extra cash for a Mac that will give me less hassles. Or when I get extra time, blow that machine out and try to figure out a way to run CoX on a Linux box.

You are lucky when I Microsoft send me an email saying my version of Windows was unauthorized they just crippled my system so I HAD to buy a new copy of Windows. Got my system (with Windows installed) from Comp USA who apparently went broke for a reason. :-|

You can upgrade to Vista for free though. Just throw your system off a 300 ft cliff, it has pretty much the same effect.

You can't please everyone, so lets concentrate on me.

Let me be the first to say "HEH!"

So you're looking to play the game with "no hassles".

So you're going to go to operating platforms that are afterthoughts and require third-party software to run. More over you're going to spend a bunch of time, money, and effort teaching yourself a new operating system.

DOES NOT COMPUTE!

Also, speaking from experience here, Mac and Linux have their own hassles. Just different ones (usually).

You hit the nail on the head, though stick around. I expect a "hotfix" before long that will address their dumbfounding mistake.

CoH runs beautifully on Linux.

I'm sorry, but Windows XP is a ten year old operating system. Move along into the 21st Century.

I couldn't get it to work on my other computer under Wine, but I imagine Cedega would have done the trick (had I been able to afford it).

WINE's come a long way recently, and I think I heard that the Cedega project got a new name and is free now.

You might not need to reinstall the OS. When you buy the OEM copy, it'll come with its own serial number; you can apply that serial number to the already installed OS and it should work. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328874

Only works on a volume license key. If you try it on an OEM copy, it'll fail. The license is matched to the media. And there are several "versions" of the OEM media out there at each major patch level.

So multiple versions at:

XP (Release)
XP SP1
XP SP2
XP SP3

Hmmm... I may have to do a Linux partition on the new rig and see what happens, then. Although the last time I tried getting WINE to work on my old computer, I couldn't get any games to work, due to my particular video card not playing well with it.
