I20- I'll be watching from the sidelines
does it say anything that i already have the ncsoft launcher installed and have been running CoX from it for weeks?
i mean, given my past experience, i'm going to wait and see. if i have to figure this out, at least i can count on threads like this to give me ideas and options. |
luckily i was able to download the SP3 installer (300 MB) and install SP3 and have everything run fine. i would have liked to know beforehand though as i wasted an hour i could have been fighting...

I'm scared to even ask your opinion of Flash. |
Flash is ok but the Whizzer is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better ;-)
In fairness, Linux does pretty well everything that Windoze does except run games. That will only change once the take up of Linux is sufficient to persuade games manufacturers that there's a significant market.
That isn't helped by the fact that some distros get a bit precious when it comes to running non-free software on their OS.
However, generally speaking you can do pretty well everything you can do on a windows or a mac on linux. It is possible to run games on Wine, but that can be flaky. I wrote a guide to running it on Ubuntu, but I've since switched to Fedora and I'm migrating to CentOS, and Wine isn't as stable on them. If you can get it running, generally there is a graphical penalty to pay simply because AMD and nVidia tend not to release their proprietary drivers as often as they do for Windows. There are free alternatives that work well for most things but often the free gfx drivers don't give you the quality.
With that said, when a game is ported or built directly for Linux, there's almost no graphical penalty: I run Second Life on both Linux and Windows, and it's very difficult to see a qualitative difference.
CoH on a RH fork? Yes please!!!!!!

Who said I needed to learn a new OS? I'm well versed in a couple flavors of Linux. I stated I'd have to figure out a way to get CoX to run on that platform. Big difference.
I currently play CoX on a MacBook, I have no problems with CoX on that machine that I do not have on any of my Windows machines. As far as spending extra cash, I'd gladly trade the extra cash for less hassle. With a Windows machine it's always something, never fails. |
Even so...I ran Windows XP for 3+ years on my system with no major issues that were related to Windows specifically.
Furthermore, after over 15 years working as a field engineer and IT admin for Windows based systems, I can say for sure that the biggest problem with Windows is usually PEBKAC.
That's not to say that there are never issues stemming from Windows, but on average I've seen more hardware and user-created faults than anything that comes from Windows itself.
The one thing I can truly accuse MS of with XP is not making their OS idiot proof enough, something they tried to correct with Vista and the UAC. I, of course, don't excuse idiocy, so someone not knowing how to use their own PC isn't something I think MS should be responsible for anyway.
Windows 7 though, I have found a joy to use. I didn't think I'd like it much after the whole Vista fiasco. But it is much better optimized and all around better to use than Vista.
I've used Linux a fair bit while I was doing support for the company I worked for previously. Its a pretty decent OS but it isn't particularly aimed at the 'average Joe' user segment. The advantages of using Linux aren't really things that the guy off the street would jump at or appreciate. Which is why its not the preferred choice for most users. Especially so if you're a dedicated gamer(which I am).
*Maybe there are distros of Linux which fit the bill better than I remember. But I haven't been inclined to explore it all that much recently.
It's good to hear that you managed to get the problem resolved. I also sympathize with the legal issues you've had with your computer.
I run my own little computer business, fixing and repairing computers. I'm a stickler when it comes to legalities, and I absolutely refuse to install any hacked or illegal software. However, I know MANY other self-proclaimed computer experts do, and I've had to help many people over the years deal with a computer that no-longer works because it turns-out that it never had a legal copy of Windows in the first place.
Just last month, I had a customer that knew for a fact that she paid extra for MS Office when she bought her computer a couple years prior, but the version installed on her computer was an illegal copy (5 seconds of Googling confirmed that very quickly).
Then not long after that, another customer wanted me to help her install Office 14 on her computer - a copy she bought on EBay recently. Guess what? It was counterfeit. Admittedly a good counterfeit, but even before looking at it in-detail, I could tell something wasn't right.

Up until windows 7, there wasn't a better operating system. Vista was, is and shall always be. a piece of crap.

Sorry but Windows 2000 was much better then XP.

Somewhere in this thread I said I was going to wait patiently for a hot fix instead of freaking out and messing with my computer (which isn't broken, contrary to Issue 20's bug affecting SP2 users). Now I'm glad I decided to wait.
The hot fix will be in tomorrow, says Dev Zwillinger.

Which will only take maybe...10 years?, 20? Duke Nukem Forever long?
I keed, I keed, okay not too much.
I like Linux and all but Windows it is for me (at least for playing games).

So you're looking to play the game with "no hassles".
So you're going to go to operating platforms that are afterthoughts and require third-party software to run. More over you're going to spend a bunch of time, money, and effort teaching yourself a new operating system.
DOES NOT COMPUTE!
Also, speaking from experience here, Mac and Linux have their own hassles. Just different ones (usually).
