Huh? Kin needs a travel power?
I don't think I've made a single character in the past year and change that actually gets a travel power instead of just running around everywhere with Ninja Run + Sprint + Raptor Packs.
Maybe that situation is rare... but plenty of players need certain criteria to be met before starting things.... oh well like Garent said better for you most likely as that player may have wanted the entire mish to run with exact rules followed.
You don't have a travel power on your Kinetics? Post your build and we can fit one in. Maybe we can drop Siphon Speed or Inertial Reduction to fit in Super Speed or Super Jump!

Since when are travel powers needed? Especially with all the alternatives there are at the moment.

Short of easily purchased jet packs, the only place that kinetic built-in travel powers are not so great are TFs in the Shard. Buy a jet pack, all is good.

Do you have Siphon Speed or Inertial Reduction? Then you have a travel power!
My namesake has SJ and SS. Siphon Speed isn't SS. IR can need to be cast again before I actually get to where I'm going. Yes, it's a character I made way back in the day and thus if I had to do it all over again I would likely do it differently, but for some reason it feels like second nature on that build.
If somebody requires you to have a travel power, then they are an idiot. Period.
Requiring a travel power is fail.
That said, Hasten is great for Kinetics, as is Super Speed. Siphon Speed gives you +run but requires aggroing an enemy and getting slowed as a result since its an offensive power. Superspeed also gives you stealth, so that and a stealth proc = full invis. IR also has a longish animation and CJ is great for combat movement and defense.
Moral of the story: You don't need a travel power, but skipping one just because you have access to IR and Siphon Speed = :C

I don't even bother getting travel powers anymore, unless its for theme (Fly on Gravity controllers/doms, for instance).
Or in the case of Stone armor, Teleport is really the most practical (plus I'm used to it from leveling my Warshade back before Ninja Run existed).
A travel power for Kinetics, nah... not if they have siphon speed.
On other characters... depends
If you are doing MO runs having no travel power sucks, i tried on on my claw/sr at one point and just couldn't do it. Its ok if you have somebody to teleport you but at some points everybody will speed off to the next objective. Sure you could have a kin to SB you but I personally don't like having to rely on another person.
I could see somebody not taking somebody because they don't have a travel power tbh, especially on MO or speed runs.
Also don't the two new trials (lambda and BAF) exclude temp powers?

Next time, ask them to instead kick everyone else from the team that doesn't have Recall Friend and see what they say. Hilarity usually ensues.

i still have a build on my ill/kin that has siphon speed + hover as his only travel powers (ok, i eventually got CJ for immob resist), but its definitely a viable way to go. especially with hover, i can cap my fly speed and run speed. drop to the ground for straight-aways and then use hover for the vertical obstacles.
however, i got so sick of siphoning that when i made my incarnate build, i got super speed too. between my loading times and having to siphon (or find something to siphon off of), i always was slightly behind everyone else and got sick of it.
viable yes, kickable offense never.
