Not so, actually. The first comic books appeared in the early 1930s and were merely reprints of the newspaper comic strips -- hence the name "comic book". Superman debuted a couple years later and superheroes took over as hundreds of costumed characters were created to ride along on the phenomenon's coattails... or cape, rather. Back in the day, Superman fever (Supermania, if you will) was bigger than Elvis or the Beatles. The year after he debuted they had an official Superman Day at the World's Fair.

It wasn't until the 1950s that horror comics started to become en vogue. That's one of the things that kicked off the comic book witch hunt.

None at all. Although it is an awesomely fun film, the best action film of last year.

Mirren's been in a lot of Fantasy films, so she's good. Hamlet, Tempest, Midsummer Night's, Excalibur... plus sci-fi like 2010 and Hitchhiker's.

I think I found a guy, though: Clark Gable. No sci-fi or Fantasy that I can tell.

Not sure about that, but she was the voice of Maggie Simpson on The Simpsons, does that count?

Also, I guess we're ruling Jimmy Stewart out based on It's A Wonderful Life, right?

Robert DeNiro?

Gone With The Wind is purest fantasy... but not in the way you mean, and a quick perusal looks as though you're right.

Gary Cooper's also light on the fantasy/sci-fi... he does have one credit that fits the bill much as GWTW does... The Fountainhead is pure fantasy as well.

Ohh, it just occurred to me (because I watched a thing on TGWTG about it) that he was also in My Boyfriend's Back. I'd pretty much completely forgotten about that 'meh' film, but playing a minor character in a rom-com/zombie flick counts as much as anything els I suppose.

I'm with you there!

Cooper is in an early version of Alice in Wonderland (with W.C. Fields and Cary Grant!) but I can't tell from the description if it's a Fantasy or just a dream.

On a similar note, that last bit is one of the things that makes me think that The Wizard of Oz is technically neither a Fantasy nor a true Musical in the sense that musicals exist in their own little world. One can argue that both the Oz parts of the film and the song before the tornado are just part of Dorothy's imagination. That's just splitting semantic hairs, though, since WoO has all the aspects of both musicals and fantasy films. The "it was a dream" thing just means you get to have your cake and eat it, too, when it comes to genres.

Hmmm, I don't remember that and I actually kind of love that movie. It's probably a short one-scene bit towards the end (after the time-skip).

He's just in it as himself for a moment giving a snippit of a TV interview about John Malkovitch's sudden turn to puppetry saying that he has always wanted to do puppetry as well.

I might have another one:

Lucille Ball. She was a pretty big time movie star (and drop-dead beautiful) before she went on TV.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Also, she doesn't she have the Ruby Slippers at the end, calling into question whether it was all a dream?

Does she? It's been a long time since I've seen the film. ::: counts on fingers and toes ::: Yeah, 22 years.

At that time the discussion was about the WWW's susceptibility to water. I mean, even supposing there's a substance that can melt you like that, why would you keep a bucket of it just sitting around? It's as if we all had buckets of hydrochloric acid all over the place.

Was the giant bus atomic? The Really Big Bus? Something like that. Let me look that up.

Edit: Ah, I'm conflating two movies: The Long, Long Trailer and The Big Bus. The bus is atomic, so everyone in that is in the club.

Ball was in the terrible musical Mame, which I think counts. She was also in something called The Magic Carpet. That one might be fantasy.
