Hero Merits question
You have to do 10 tip missions followed by a morality mission to earn Hero or Villain merits.
More specifically, you have to re-confirm your alignment (i.e. you don't get a merit the first time you confirm your alignment or switch alignment) and you can't earn merits as a Rogue or Vigilante. Also, if you change alignments, you lose unspent merits you've earned.
You can "buy" Alignment Merits for 50 Reward Merits + 20 million Inf.

I feel like a bit of a n00b asking this but..............
I've been playing this game for years and I've heard people talk of 'hero merits' and how they are worth 50 times what a normal merit is worth, but I've never received a hero merit. Am I doing something wrong? do you have to craft them? |
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

You also can buy any Purple recipe with Alignment Merits (A-Merits), also known as Hero or Villain Merits respectively. For about 30 A-Merits you can get PvP recipes.

Don't you have to have Going Rogue to spend A-merits?

As long as you are not changing your alignment you get some sort of merit reward.
Hero/Villain:
1st Morality Mission = 50 reward merits
2nd+ Morality Missions = 1 Alignment Merit
Rogue/Vigilante:
1st Morality Mission changes your alignment
2nd Morality Mission confirming your current alignment = 30 reward merits
3rd+ Morality Missions = 60 reward merits

And 1 Alignment Merit is worth 100 Reward Merits. Far more than that if you consider you can buy things with them you'd never be able to with RMs.

You also can buy any Purple recipe with Alignment Merits (A-Merits) |
It requires 20 Alignment merits to purchase a purple recipe, and at 2 days per merit, you are looking at waiting 40 days to get that one purple (240 days for a single set unless you are going ahead and running multiple alts to each save up for a purple or two).
Alternatively, depending on market conditions and depending on the purple set you are after, you can often purchase (for 2 merits) a highly desirable recipe to craft and resell for what a single purple recipe may cost, with some cash left over. Going about it that way, you can have your 6 piece purple set in 12 days (or less if using multiple alts).
It is also worth noting that using Alignment Merits to buy purples is highly inefficient both timewise and infwise.

What willowpaw said is ... variable. Some purple sets can be that inexpensive. Others (the desireable ones, so probably what you were looking for) are much, much more expensive. Might cost as much as 8 AM's worth of other recipes.

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
