Discussion: Examiner.com interviews Melissa Bianco

Either our devs get sent to every interview with pre-approved Marketing-speak answer cards or they've been trained with shock therapy, they're all masters of saying nothing in the best way now.

I think they need to be a bit more forth coming when talking about future issues 20, and 21. Understandable that hot topics like F2P, and CoX2 were not touched. But, it seems to me, it can be counter productive not to talk about more of what is to come. For example, the hint that they may change the existing zones to match the new end game lore, is something to keep an eye on if it makes it to the drawing board.

Really not much to draw from that interview. Overall it didn't excite me. I've been here since the beginning ish (CoH closed beta).
I know that people take all kinds of different things out of the game, and that is a wonderful thing.
I like the stories. I prefer capes and tights, super hero stories. I do not like the Praetorian stories. They are ok occasionally, but really I could care less about Praetoria.
The Incarnate content is ok. I wouldn't miss it if it was removed. I am not a power gamer. It is great that some people are, and I'm glad they are getting this content. Just is kind of "meh" to me. So far it is uberness that lets me do TF's so that I can become more uber. o.O
In the last year my life has changed. I no longer have the time to play I once did. The grinding of TFs, is just too much for me. I've been trying to get the Incarnate levels, just because it is the new stuff. But, it has been very frustrating. If a TF fails I do not have time to reorganize and try again. Last week the PUG I was on couldn't dent Battle Maiden. Last night I couldn't find a group to do Numina. I sat next to her for awhile at midnight EST. Even attempted to form a group on my own. Didn't work. If I can't find a group tonight, then I'll miss out on another week of trying to get a notice.
I would do "regular" content. But after 7 years I have finally gotten over my altitis. There just isn't any content I care to see that I haven't already done.
So reading in that interview Praetoria and Incarnate as the big things to look forward to, well, does not excite me.
I know these are to two new things. But I hope that there is something other than these two in an update soon after Issue 20.
I always said I would stay with CoX till I was kicked out. Have even said I'd like to be the last person kicked off a server if it ever shuts down. But lately I am just finding it harder and harder to find anything to be excited about. I know some love Praetoria and Incarnate stuff. I think that is great. This is just how I feel.

Gah nothing that I don't already know wasn't said. These are mostly for people who don't know anything about the game. I'm glad they're doing this that way we can get more people to come play CoH which means more revenue!!!

It sounds like you could do with a break from the game - there's no point playng if you're not enjoying it, and as I20 doesn't have a lot of content that you'd enjoy, now might be a good time to go recharge your batteries, and then come back for I21.

If I leave I doubt I'll be back. I like my 7 year VET status. ;shrug
(nearly unbroken except for a 2 week stretch while I was deployed to Iraq and couldn't fix a credit card issue. (old one expired, new one needed to be added).
My real worry is that Issue 21 will be more of the same. Heck... 22, 23, 24... just worried that this is the wave of the future.
It would be nice to hear different. I don't need to hear anything specific. But would be nice to know that something other than Preatoria or Incarnate content (and by that I mean stories, not a new "system") are coming... and soon.
And for the record I have been taking a break. I've been playing other games where I can wear capes and tights. I do not think it is a better game. But there are stories there, missions there, that I haven't run 14 million times already, and playing doesn't feel like a grind.

Edit: I walked away and started to think about this. I do not need a break. What I do need is content I care about. If the game, and the majority of players has gone a new direction then so be it. But just because I don't like the current direction, does not mean I need a break. Quite honestly I've been hanging around hoping for something that interests me since Issue 13 (I am rather patient).
Just saying that I hope that Praetoria and Incarnates are not all we will see in the future. Give us something other than TF grinds, please.

well, tommorow(or more accurately, later today) is pax east, didn't really expect them to step on their own feet for a big announcement. this seemed to be a piece for people who arent current players/active forumites. so the lack of major news..eh, not really a big worry, just get chatty later today, thanks.

Examiner.com really needs to tone down the damn pop-ups and such. Two pop-ups blocked, one made it through, and a freaking ad bar along the bottom and a suggestion box popping out of the side. It was worse than a porn site.

Aside from that annoyance, the interview was a good read. But not really anything new.

I read this article and felt Melissa was being cautious. Writers want to make a name for themselves. The questions he asked would have put people on the defensive, he was not really knowledgeable or concerned about the game in my opinion.

Examples:

1.Returning to City of Heroes a while back to check out the Going Rogue content, it seemed like the streets were a bit more ‘barren’ than in the game’s early days. While the City of Heroes game world has expanded, the player base doesn’t appear to have expanded with it, instead dispersing the same number of players over a much larger area. How do you think the Superhero MMORPGs can attract and retain more players?
I think the above question just points to the ignorance of the writer. Praetoria is a trial zone once you mature...you leave. The zone usage will vary depending on the number of trials and new players at any one time. This cannot be used as a measure of the realtime community.

2.Action-oriented MMORPGs such as DC Universe Online and forthcoming juggernauts Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic are leading the way toward a new generation of MMORPGs. Turn-based combat seems to be slowly on its way out and faster, action-RPG style combat is in. Story telling has also advanced considerably beyond the read-a-dialog-box-click-accept model. How does City of Heroes plan to evolve or keep up?

What?

3. City of Heroes has done an outstanding job of continuing to add new animations, power effects, costumes, and other content to their character creation system. But visually the game is definitely showing its age. Will we see future visual improvements?

I have ultramode on my laptop but I play with the regular settings because I want faster game play. Even with Ultramode, two of my friends have been upgraded out of the game. Graphics require more memory and disk space. CoH is 3-4GB and DCUO is between 13GB(compressed) and 30GB(uncompressed). How much time do you want to spend downloading? Even at that DCUO isn't "Praetoria." Read their boards to hear about the game. Also, DCUO PS3 and PC are different platforms completely. You can't play with your friends competely on your terms.

4. Will there be a City of Heroes 2?

This is a noob question. City of Heroes has lots of life left why talk about COH 2?

5.Are there any plans to follow a Cataclysm-like mold and just blow the whole damn world to hell and ‘re-write’ old regions of the game?

Melissa answered this question in the first interview, why he's asking this again?

"While other games try to emulate that “magic formula” to be the big WoW-Killer, we incorporate systems that fit our game, our genre, our style."

6. Any plans for new giant monsters?

I'm surprised Melissa didn't laugh out loud at this question. Just Tacky!

7.Going F2P has clearly been a winning move for Turbine. Dungeons & Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online have both benefitted heavily in terms of subscriber numbers from switching to this model. City of Heroes already has an in-game store. Will City of Heroes eventually go completely F2P?

NCSOFT decides this not Paragon Studio. He talking to the wrong person.

More factual hitching: 'never raised level cap'. I suppose 40 to 50 doesn't count? I suppose it could be argued that was less of raising the level cap and more of a delayed rollout, but still.

I do rather wonder what kind of system reviewers have been using lately, as CoH really is not showing its age. Its old settings were pretty decent maxed out, and things were really upped with GR... we have a lot more shadows, textures, etc. It's almost like they're playing without Ultra mode on or something.

Sure, we're not the next bleeding edge FPS, but an MMO should not go for that, in my opinion (or any game... I prefer a unique style, myself). "Showing its age" is not accurate at all... I rather wish our devs would have called the last two interviewers on this more.

I have no clue what his turn based action comment was about either... is there an MMO that even uses turn based combat? That's mostly strategy games and some RPGs... unless he's using the term differently than I have heard it used before. I would say that CoH has its shortcomings with some action elements, but its powers system is quite good... from what I can see and hear of other new games, our system works much better still.

I can appreciate that you're not happy with the content we've received. I can also appreciate that you just want to know if there's anything in the future that you will find interesting.

But what I find ironic is, you claim you don't need a break from the game, yet you haven't found anything interesting in the game since i13 (Which by the way I find extremely hard to believe). That's 5 issues that have come and you're telling me that there is absolutely nothing at all that has interested you?

There's obviously something keeping you here. Might be time to re-evaluate what that is.

We'll see....

Nothing to evaluate. Is simple. An investment of time in the game combined with a hope in what is to come.

Not to mention I am tired of everytime somebody voices an opinion that is anything but fanboi drowling it is answered with waves of posts about what is wrong with anyone that has even a remotely negative post. I think there should be more story content focused on capes and tights heroes. Obviously this means I should take a break. Obviously there is something WRONG with me. Geesh... is it so awful to just let somebody post their opinion wihout having to try to "fix" them? It is possible for a person to have an opinion contrary to the main without anything being "wrong" with them.

Plus its not like I felt like I do right now the instant I13 came out.

But to the point liked nothing. Hmm... Ok.

Issue 13 - Day jobs are fun. But... umm... where is the new content? Story?!?!?

Issue 14 - Mission Architect. Well we can't think up any more stories. Here, think them up yourself. Oh, and by the way. Gold farming and power levelers are now going to really make the game fun for everyone. Good luck trying to have a conversation in Atlas Park.

Issue 15 - The worst writing we've had in the game. The 5th Column Task Force. Wow... that was bad. So Nemesis, Countess Crey, Gyrfalcon, and Vanessa DeVorr are working with Reichsman why? Maybe they aren't working for him, but Reichsman has captured them and is using them... maybe? What is going on? And how does Requiem feel about losing control of the 5th Column? Horrible. Just bad. Really bad. At HeroCon I've had Devs admit to me this is bad. But, they add it can't really be changed now. ;sigh

Issue 16 - Hard not to like power set customization. But no real story content update. (again what I said attracted me to the game).

Issue 17 - Email attachments, very much full of win. 4 mission story arcs. Good fun. Not perfect, but ok. So yes new story. But, not the best writing we've gotten in CoH. And no thought to how silly the dialog would be for a Praetorian just arriving in Paragon, or a hero just getting their cape. (Should have made this story arc at least level 25)

Going Rogue - New maps. New missions. New Stories. All wonderfully done. I wont say anything here is bad. (Ok aside from Ambushes anyone?) But I play CoH primarily because I enjoy playing a hero. The shades of grey in GR is wonderfully done. To the point that there isn't a path that I really find enjoyable. I have occasionally enjoyed the CoV side. But 90% or more of my game time is blue side. I'm not saying anything wrong with things. Just it isn't what I like. So I have to figure that the missing content from I13 through I17 all went into GR. At this point I was hoping with GR out development would not stay exclusively focused on Praetoria. After all, development did not stay focused on the Rogue Isles after the CoV release.

Issue 18 - Tips are fun. But how the Heroic Alignment mission has anything to do with being a hero is beyond me. Pardon me, please just stand there while I murder this person right in front of you. Right then, I'll just be off. Weee... your a hero. o.O

Issue 19 - Merged Monorails, Ferries, and Black Helicopters, about time. Wonderous. Incarnate? Meh... Seems to have just been about phat loot and raid grinding.

So, whats to come? This is just one vote for some regular capes and tights hero story along with this new "end game" content.
