NcSoft Launcher = Faster download times?

Hi everybody,

so installed the new launcher and because I could see them listed, I tried launching Test and Beta. Both required a huge update (3.5Gb and 4 Gb)

Started to groan and then saw that I was downloading data at approx 6000Kbs/sec. I used to get about 150Kbs/sec using the old launcher.

In no time at all I was patched and ingame on both.

Nothing has changed my end, so is it just the new launcher that is giving me this download sweetness?

If so, will it have any effect on lag/rubberbanding ingame (thinks RWZ raids!)?

And finally I know that 6000 seems better than 150 but is it "good" or still "slow but better than what I was getting"? Not sure what others get and am not a techie!

Thanks.

The launcher just patches the game files, nothing has changed in the game itself. The RWZ raids will behave just the same.

Depending on your connection, 6000Kb/s is pretty darn good. Test your connection speed at www.speedtest.net and you can compare how much of your downstream is it using.

I recall reading a redname post on the Test forum saying that the new Launcher had faster connections. Also, if you set it to run in the background, it'll update itself as it finds patches, so you won't need to wait on patch day!

Once you've loaded the game, it's the same thing whether you use the old patcher or the new one. You won't notice any in-game difference as a result of this change.

Just used your link and my download is 50 Mb/sec, the arrow was jammed hard up against the highest dial setting in the red as it ran so I guess I am getting the best I can. My ISP seems to be giving me a decent service.

Thanks for that linkie.

And thanks for your input Guys, muchly appreciated although shame about the "Raids".

Sounds like you have great bandwidth. As you may have surmised from this experience, the true limitation on download speed (once you reach broadband-class bandwidth) is in how much 'pipe' the Server gives you.

So, your 6000 Kps could be quite fast at 6 megaBits per second, or it could be rather awesome-fast at 6 megaBytes per second (Bytes is 4x Bits). Either way, it looks like NCSoft may have invested some money in 'fat pipe' for us. Although I still don't see why we need a New Launcher to make this work.

Be Well!

Unless someone redefined terms again, a Bit is the smallest unit of information (a 1 or 0), a Byte is 8 Bits, and a Nybble is half a Byte (or 4 Bits).

Specifically, the post here says:
"For example, the NCsoft Launcher will allow you to download patches faster by using a content distribution network."

Wondering if this is like what Blizzard does, distribute patches via a custom bittorrent client.

If it's faster, doesn't compromise security, doesn't destabilize my machine, and doesn't bork the game I could give a damn what they're using (IP over carrier pigeon).

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Exactly. It relies on seeding and then players keeping the ncsoft launcher on.

I dunno about the faster downloading time. Seems the same to me. But the launcher seems to have somehow miraculously fixed the annoying problem I had of the computer freezing up whenever I exited to the desktop, and my having to go to Task Manager to shut off the game client. So it's a win for me either way.

Someone did some digging and found the system wasn't a P2P but something that begins with an A... The official thread has it. Basically the data is caches at several locations by supporting ISPs from what I recall reading. Last I heard, anyway. Which is nice because too many people doing bad things (which may or may not merely include people using thenservice they were promised and paid for) with various P2P has cause ISPs to throttle them no matter what the usage from what I've read of others' complaints.

So far the launcher has been working fine for me. It sees all three client versions and has worked well keeping them up to date.

So far i'd say the patch downloading has been a bit faster, but it's always been a fairly quick process for me.

Most definite speed improvement for both DL's and actual game startup. I love the consolidated interface.

Download for me is much faster. Game startup is faster.

I have to test things out, but the "apply" speed seems to be faster and it certainly helps keep me on top of which of my three clients needs updating.
