New NCSOFT Installer Failure

Posted

This may be to new an issue for any posts yet.

I tried to run CoH today and was informed that I had to install a new NCSoft installer. I D/L the new installer and ran it. About 60% in it failed with a "Access to the path is denied" error. Restarted it and did the Repair option, same error. Ran a registry cleaner and restarted the machine (WIN/7 64-bit). Same error.

The problem is that from the NCSoft log, I cannnot tell what that error message is suppose to mean. I have had CoH, through different itterations, for years. What is changes now in this installer?

Has NCSoft added some new security software that may conflict with Anti-Virus programs that I need to identify?

I'm using Win7 64 and have Norton Internet Security running. I updated the launcher so it now shows only Live and Test, no Beta, even though I had that installed. As far as I can tell, the only rule attached to it allows 2 way access.

Problem shows up when I choose the City of Heroes and hit PLAY NOW, it simply cycles the 'Launching City of Heroes/Villain' popup window constantly, unless I hit cancel. No game ever launches. It also seems to have rewritten all my shortcuts for my COH launcher, so I can't do jack.

It sounds like your NCsoft Launcher did not update properly. Try exiting NCsoft Launcher and restarting it.

I've restarted the PC and launcher a few times, no dice. I've also got Guild Wars and that runs fine. Same problem persists for me for the COH launcher.

I enabled the Run as administrator as well to the coh file . the window overlay popped up , asking me for permission to allow NC.FindLauncherStub to make changes to pc, I clicked yes, it keeps re running, popping up an Access Denied window, unless I hit No initially to stop the cycle. =[

KK, I found my fix. I did the *Big* uninstall of all NCSoft and re-installed. Like I said in my first post, I have had CoH on my machine for *years*. All those patches. I guess some of them had small _problems_ that were maybe the source of the problems.

The new NCSoft Installer probably needs absolutly no minor variations in previous patches. I do not know what the "access path" was that was broken, but a *Big* fix does it.

well...

I uninstalled everything.
Now its installing the game.

Funny thing is... the patcher called a window just like the old patcher.

And with all the people trying to download/solve their problems, my 10mb connection will take 74 hours to finish the download.

...sigh...

sigh. Add me to the list of people that have issues. At first I got this

Error Code: 3 (PatchPathNotFound):
There was no way found to patch from version '1.5.1.0' to version: '1.5.25.1'.
The patch servers are most likely in the process of being updated.
Please try again in a few minutes.

I went back and noticed that the old launcher had left some files in my computer when I uninstalled it a few months ago. I deleted the old leftover file and the new launcher started to load correctly.

So I might have to uninstall the entire game before I can download the new launcher? If that's the case, it's a good thing I bought that complete collection box for Going Rogue.

I assume everyone simply installed the launcher into it's own folder?

All you need to do is create a shortcut on your desktop to old.cohupdater in you City of Heroes folder. That'll get you back into the game while you and support fix the NCSoft Launcher install.

I just uninstalled the launcher and then made sure there were no parts of it left in my system. Once I did that i was able to reinstall the new launcher and it worked fine for me. I never touched CoH to get it working.

I was under the impression you couldn't uninstall just the launcher part of City of Heroes. How would I do that?

The NCLauncher is a completely separate program from City of Heroes. We aren't talking about uninstalling City of Heroes.

My room mate installed the new installer and has an strange problem with it. It seems to want to send him to the test server. He also has problems getting to his ncsoft account, as opposed to into the game. It keeps telling him that the computer he is on isn't authorized to go to his game account information. Life was simpler before the new patcher. Personally, I am going to avoid installing it until forced to by circumstances beyond my control, like NCSoft requiring it....

He said "launcher" and "new launcher". I'm talking about the original City of Heroes launcher, not the NCLauncher.

Just to clarify on this thread, you do no need to uninstall anything to transition to using NCsoft Launcher.

If you have problems installing NCsoft Launcher, contact technical support here:

https://help.ncsoft.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4654

If, after installing NCsoft Launcher, it complains that it cannot patch your game, then try the repair option (right click on the game in the list of games in NCsoft Launcher).

Except in my case where I originally installed City of Heroes in 2004. Back then the game installed itself in the folder C:\Program Files\City of Heroes. When I installed and ran the NCsoft Launcher, I tried to start up City of Heroes and it immediately installed a second version of City of Heroes in C:\Program Files\NCsoft\City of Heroes. I ended up having to uninstall my original copy of the game and transfer all my saved costume files, keybinds, etc. to the new folder. Kind of annoying for what was supposed to be a seamless transition.

Even if it did not find your old installation of City of Heroes, you still did not need to uninstall it. At the Installation screen, where it shows you the "Total download size:", you can press the "Customize" button and point it to your existing installation.

I don't want players thinking that they need to uninstall their old installation and re-download and install City of Heroes when they transition to using NCsoft Launcher.

I know this information does not help you right now. I just want to make sure this information is available for future players who may experience this issue.

Once I realized it was re-installing the game, I tried to stop it and point it to my old installation. But for some reason it couldn't find the file CityofHeroes.exe in the old folder. Somehow the old filename got temporarily changed. After the full download and the new version was completely installed, the Launcher could see both old and new versions of CityofHeroes.exe. By then I just uninstalled the old version of the game.

Tex, thank you for replying. Hopefully other long time players can avoid the problem I had and get back to playing sooner.

Okay, I'm starting to get really pissed off here. I downloaded the installer to get the NCLauncher, try to set it up, and then I get to the part that says I need the .Net framework 2.0. I go here, and follow the instructions for XP users.
https://help.ncsoft.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6085
Okay, odd, it links to me a download for 3.0 even though 4.0 is available. Okay, whatever. And now THAT won't set up because it can't even connect to the server for it. What just happened?
Update: So much for installing 4.0

Okay, apparently I wasn't able to download the NClauncher because on the March 3 news update has links to the CoH Installer instead of the NClauncher, which is actually here. http://us.ncsoft.com/en/launcher/ncsoft-launcher.html
Because of the incorrect link, I wasted a whole bunch of time attempting to upgrade to 3.0 or 4.0 .NET framework when the 2.0 I had was fine. Brilliant.
Now I only have to figure out why the launcher won't connect to the Launcher Update Server.
EDIT: Never mind, apparently I am technologically incompetent.
