Forum avatars non-updatable

I and at least several other folks have been unable to change forum avatars for many months... roughly 9 (or more), I think. It lets you REMOVE one, but not change an existing one. Granted, it's a minor annoyance... that's rapidly approaching a year old.

Anyone going to bother fixing it? This year?

I was just able to update mine, though it took me inputting my image's url twice to stick. What the forums did do was eat my bug post.

I changed mine in November. Haven't felt a need to change it recently.

I know that I've seen Zombie Man's and possibly Master Blade's icons changed since mine was changed.

Also, if you are hosting the file on your own server somewhere, the forums do not like tilde characters (~).

Since October I went from jack-o-'zombie, Calvin Scott graffiti, a Pilgrim eating a brain turkey, a Shard, a zombie attacking a snowman, Alpha Badges, and my valentine candy.

Try putting this as your avatar as a test. It's a working image that works for me...

I'm just wondering if the op is using the wrong link. Wish he would post the link he's trying to use.

I've tried using the actual url to the hosted image:

I've also tried using two different shortened urls, one by the internal tool on the hosting:

And one by an external service (bit.ly):

None of them work. The tool for changing the url doesn't even retain the change - when I click "submit", it clears the field and stares at me expectantly, rather like a dumb dog.

Sorry about not posting more info on this earlier. Forums apparently not showing me new responses to this thread, either - I just came back and looked randomly.

Other things I've tried - the obvious cookies, cached files, blah, blah, blah. Also have attempted via three different browsers on three different computers. One is my wife's, in the same room. She can update her avatar fine, but not mine.

Wasn't clear on this before, but this only seems to affect some people - it's not universal, or even terribly wide-spread. But it HAS been going on for a LONG time. If I had to guess (which is pretty much what I'm limited to, at this stage), this "feels" like some kind of forum db corruption. Hard to say since, if it's some kind of oddball issue at my end, I've never gotten any input from support to that effect.

AFAIK, the link *has* to end in a file extension.....

You could use something like dropbox to host your images (ie save what you have already) and then link directly from there.

*sigh* Will have to give that a try, thanks. Would have been nice if they'd left well-enough alone, since all my prior working avatars were hosted in the same place and linked in the same manner.

For that matter, assuming you're correct, it would have been nice for "support" to have said so sometime in the past year.

I only knew what the problem could be once i saw the URL that you were linking to.

Although it isnt obvious, but is unfortunately pretty much standard across the forum software i have met in the past, when it says "jpg, bmp or png file types are allowed", it also means that the URL has to end in that as well.
