Do i have to keep paying
If you're playing on a free trial, there should be an option to upgrade to a full version on the character select screen. If you choose to upgrade, it'll take you to the NCStore website where you can digitally purchase one of several versions of the game (Going Rogue is the most recent and complete version). Once purchased, you should be given the option of applying the serial code for the game to your PlayNC master account; having never upgraded from a trial version myself, I'm assuming that you had to make one as part of the trial process. Once the code is applied, you should be able to play the game as normal. Just be sure that you're purchasing the proper game client for the servers you want to play on, either North American or European.
If you've already purchased the full game and are playing, you should have a 30-day free period. Still, you need to long into your plaync master account and set up a subscription option to continue playing after that period is up. Major credit cards and Paypal are direct payment options, and you can also purchase NCSoft 30-day time cards and apply the serial codes found on them. Assuming that they're available in your area.

The monthly subscription is $14.99 USD. I don't know what it converts to in Euros.

But after that first month, the subscription needs to be renewed.
There are a few different options for renewal, ranging from month to month to annual.
The NCSoft site is where you can manage your account(s). Be sure to read up on the difference between your GAME account and your NCSoft MASTER account. Your NCSoft MASTER account holds all your GAME accounts in one place for easy management. Often, the Master account has the same name/password as your first game account... but I believe that it can be set up differently. I'm not the expert on how that's done, so maybe someone else has better details on that front.

If you for some reason do not wish to play any more, you can cancel future billing - You'll still have whatever time you payed for, but the card will not be auto-billed when the time expires.
(additionally, I believe you can subscribe by other means, like paypal - not sure how auto billing works with those)
If you subscribe by game time card, when you enter the serial number of the card to your account, an equivalent amount of time will be added to your account. Just be aware that you must enter another time card before your time ends (or switch to another payment method) if you do not want to be temporarily locked out of the game between when one ends and you enter the next one.
Whatever you choose, know that there is no penalty for having an inactive account, your characters and their levels/enhancements/whathaveyou will still be there if you ever choose to re-subscribe.

Welcome to the game and the forum
The sub fee adds up to about 50 cents a day - it's the cheapest entertainment around

City of Heroes comics and artwork
Plus sometimes retailers on and offline have specials where you can pick up the game cheaper...Got my Going Rogue edition for $10 on Steam during a sale. (Had CoH/CoV already but for that price it was too good to pass up...lol)
And as others have posted, for the monthly price it's really cheap compared to a lot of other stuff.
The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.

Actually the cheapest form of entertainment is reading books at the library. Don't need to spend an annual fee on a membership. Kind of frowned upon when you do that at a bookstore or comic store.
|
That's all really besides the point though.
I wouldn't call CoX the cheapest form of entertainment, but it is an economically wise entertainment choice. Given that one month of sub time costs less than a movie ticket, popcorn, and drink at most movie theaters these days; you're getting a lot more bang for your buck with the CoX subscription.

I don't buy snacks at the theater any more.

There are five things that I think of when justifying the monthly cost of an MMORPG to someone.
1) As others have pointed out, most subscribers feel that compared to other things you could spend $15 a month on, an MMORPG is actually a really good value. For the price of one movie (if you throw in a drink or popcorn), you get hours and hours of entertainment. Some people play this game a couple of hours every night, more on weekends. A movie will net you two hours or so of entertainment, period.
2) If you're like me, paying $15 a month will actually supplant other entertainment expenses. I used to pay around $120 per month on DirecTV for the ultra premium package, movie channels and all. Now, I pay around $60 for a lower-tier cable package, and I would probably pay even less if I didn't like Mythbusters, Cash Cab, and watching the Falcons games so much.
3) I think of the game less as just a game and more as a hobby. Compared to other hobbies, $15 a month is actually pretty durn cheap. If you're into golf, for example, you'll be laughed at if you try to play for $15 per month. I have a friend who spends at least $100 per month or more on his woodworking hobby. Of course, having said that, I kind of carry the game to a hobbyist extreme, administrating the Titan Network/Paragon Wiki sites. Still, you get my point...
4) Unlike other games that you go out and buy once and you're done, the developers release a lot of free content every few months. Halo 2 is pretty much identical as the day I bought it. But if you could see all of the differences between CoH Day One and CoH Now, you'd know that it's well worth it. Have I spent a lot of money over the years on subscription fees? Yes, but the way I see it, it's like I've bought City of Heroes plus 20 sequels.
5) You'll frequently see references (and I've made them myself) to $15 per month, and when you first start out, I'd encourage you to pay month-by-month to make sure you like the game. If you do and you're willing to invest longer-term into it, you can pay by the year instead and get a much better deal; I think that works out to around $12 per month. Plus, the past couple of years around the end-of-year holidays, they've offered a limited-time offer of a couple of extra months if you buy a year's worth of time, which actually works out, if I'm not mistaken, to around $11 per month.
So yes, there is a monthly subscription fee associated with the game, and that does turn off some people. Still, I think that most people here would agree that it is well worth the money. I can't guarantee you that it will be in your case because I don't know you. If you've already bought the game, play the hell out of it during your free month, enough to make an informed decision about whether that monthly fee is worth it to you.
Even if it's not, you might want to check the main web site now and then. Every once in a while, they have a "free weekend" promotion where anyone who has purchased the game can play for free, whether their account is expired or not. It's a good way to keep up with game updates, and who knows? Maybe if it's borderline now, at some point in the future, a new update will come along that pushes it over to "I really like this!" territory that will be worth the monthly fee.
Regardless of what you decide, though, welcome to the game for at least a month, and good luck! I think you'll find the people here really nice and the action and story very compelling. I've paid $60 or more for games without subscription fees that I played for less than a month, so even if you decide not to subscribe, I think you'll get your money's worth in fun!
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
Yes. As others have pointed out, you have to continue the subscription to continue playing.
However, there are things you can do to minimize sub fees, such as paying, up front, for longer periods of subscription.
- 1 month: $14.99*
- 3 months: $41.85* (equivalent to $13.95 per month)
- 6 months: $77.70* (equivalent to $12.95 per month)
- 12 months: $143.40* (equivalent to $11.95 per month)
Also, around Christmas, they've been running deals for 12+2 months for the regular 12 month price (Basically ten bucks and change a month).
That's essentially the price of a single movie ticket a month and it's (more or less) always on, and always there when you want to play. You can play as much or as little as you want.
Honestly this game has SAVED me an enormous amount of money. Instead of getting bored, going looking for SOMETHING to do to keep me occupied (and spending stupid amounts of money doing so), I just log on and lay some smack down on various bad people.
I also understand some of the frustration with "rent to pwn". I used to be militantly against it myself. I'd like to think I've wised up. There's more to do in this game than just about any stand-alone game out there. Plus the level of social interaction with my fellow players makes it much more enjoyable.

Original question has already been answered, but as has been mentioned, you can get someone to send you a buddy code or wait for a trial weekend if you want to see what the game's like before you buy.
And talking about people's hobbies costing them more money than this, the sheer amount of money I have spent on Rock Band makes this game pale in comparison.

And this is just completely off-topic now. Sorry.
