Don't be blue. Look at it this way, You'll have somthing different to switch to if you want a change of pace. Even powersets within an archetype play differently from each other.

The general consensus is that the people that use those two forms of communication usually turn out to be immature jerks. Now that doesn't always apply to everyone. There are some people that are roleplaying a character but you can tell them apart because the jerks will insult and mock you if you mention that you have no clue what they are saying.
Just as a note here, the in-game enemy group known as Freakshow have a tendency to 'speak' in, or even have their names in leet. For example, t3h S00p4rFr34k! (exclamation point being part of the name)

And exactly how often are you receiving Tells from NPC's?

The last time I played the NPC's only had preprogrammed responses that they said when you got within range of them. That's a far cry from trying to have an intelligent conversation with another player.

Edit: On a basic North American account we can make 144 characters, and up to 396 if we buy extra character slots. That's more than any of us will ever use. If the game only allowed us 2-3 characters total then the devs might have allowed us to change powersets.

I have over 100 characters spread across 2 accounts.

Heh, yep, I have 136 characters currently being tracked on City Information Tracker ( http://cit.cohtitan.com/ ) all on one account (that doesn't include a few placeholder toons) and I use a multi-page Excel spreadsheet to help keep track of them. Alts (alternate characters, as opposed to a specific 'main' character) give you a chance to try new things, or to do the same thing, only differently this time.

Sometimes you might have an idea for a character and/or a costume and then spend an hour wrestling with the character creator, trying to bring them to life. Sometimes you meet somebody cool and decide to create a new character on their 'home' server, so you can spend more time with them. Sometimes you get fed up with the atmosphere on one server and decide to start fresh on another one.

Whatever the motivation, Alts are fun.

Be Well!

What does that have to do with anything? 'Leet' came up and I thought it was an interesting note that we have an enemy group that uses a fair amount of the stuff in its in-game dialogue.

Leet came up in a discussion about how it's use in conversations between players is generally frowned upon because the people using it are usually rude and immature and are using it to get around profanity filters. The fact that there is an NPC group that uses it wasn't relevant to the subject being discussed.

I'm sorry if you missed that.

No I caught that part. Heck Ii even quoted a nice chunk of that in my post. I wasn't attempting to further that line of conversation, merely to point out a bit about the game that I've always found entertaining to a new player. Maybe I shoud have said, "Just an aside here," instead of, "Just a note." Since that's what it was.

In any case, if someone's never heard of leet before, don't you think it's at least worth mentioning that an enemy group in ghe game makes somewhat extensive use of it? I mean I guess not, but I did, so there you go.

Well Freeway I don't know if i've stumbled accross your characters or not. I've made two characters red side on Protector and will be happy to team up. Took a few days to get them to double Origin enhancements so they'd be actually useful. And yay candy canes!... At 100 to 400 hundred thou on the market I didn't even have to global mail cash off an older toon to them. hehe

Any chance you can give us the character names so that I and anyone else here can add your character names to friend lists on those toons? Every time I zone I type /whoall to see if someone named freewaydoggy or freeway anything is in zone but have yet to see you. Granted, you may be using a new character name. Or we may be time zone incompatable. I'm Pacific coast.

My alts on protector are...

Storm Boxer: level 12 Stalker Elec/Ninja (to dual box-about with your stalker)

Pepe' Le PewPewPew: level 12 Corruptor Rad/Dark (blasting/support for brute or stalker or anything...)
This character even though low can be used to help speed you though early missions if you needed to start another alt due to powerset re-thinkin'. Not quite 'powerleveling' but not too shabby.

Happy new year! Hope I'm not too late to team up.

PS: Got a character to 17 eh? Gratz! Trying a month out then?

Yeah you totally caught me off guard with that.

I was totally focused on it's use and abuse between players and the Freakshows automatic responses never crossed my mind.

Well appart from Ohm Town and a few other fight by your side, or rescue-me NPC Freaks; we are as Villian, Hero and Preatorian guests one and all allowed to clobber them on sight.

Just bind "What unutterable cheek!..." to an attack (hopefully one with knockback or something) and smite them!

I am trying a year out w/ pay. Anyway, my global name is Instigateress (my very first toon which I deleted cuz she was a praet. I HATE PRAETORIA!) My new one that I am currently working on now is Brutalianne which I managed to get to lvl 11 so far. She is due for a Mayhem. My other one is Cat From Hell, a lvl 15 stalker. I do have a hero that I am trying so I can get her to betray later & become a villain. I want to see what that is like. Her name is Bea Atch & she is a lvl 6 defender who does ranged.

Just a warning but that hero name you chose could get petitioned and genericed for being offensive and trying to get around the profanity filter. I'm saying this because I got nailed when someone petitioned a character I had named Phart the Dispersing.

It could happen right away or even months from now. There's no way to know when or if someone will make a complaint.

Awesome name! Rather sad you were not allowed to keep it. That's not even using a cuss word. Some peoples eh.... touchy.

Freeway... wow a whole year! That's diving right in I dare say? hehe

I'll add those names to the local friends lists of those two toons. If you suddenly get a popup that says "Roguedemonhunter would like to be your global friend"

I hope you'll click yes. I alt-character hop tween the servers a lot so globalfriend might make things easier.

Cheerio!

Thanks, Rogue, yeah global IS easier. I did not get that char banned yet, but maybe just in case, I should make another one to take her place? Forbin, I send u a private message about someone whose name was DEFINITE vocabulary in the game!

I've seen lots of names get the Generic hammer in the game, some deserved it like the Inv/SS tanker, huge model with green skin and purple pants named "Hulk Smash" and some were borderline. I've even seen a bunch that you'd think wouldn't fly that have survived several years.

I have a buddy who loves puns in his character names; he has things like "Sultan Battery" for a Kin/Elec defender with the egyptian headdress; "Ohm Depot" on an Elec/Shield scrapper and many others I'm not thinking of right offhand.

One thing that really helps a lot of us to enjoy a character is a good name; if the name is really good and the character's fun to play then you'll really enjoy it. My BS/Shield scrapper, Sword of Damocleve, is an example of that for me anyway with the play on the fable of the Sword of Damocles. Another of my favorites is my Ill/Rad controller Nameless Phantom, he's an homage to the western drifter who never settles in anywhere long enough for anyone to remember his name. My Archery/EM blaster Sagitarii hearkens back to the ancient Roman archery formations of the same name. My namesake Invuln/Stone tanker Call Me Awesome was named in response to the civillian comments whenever I'd rescue them from a purse snatching... they always told my character "You're Awesome!" so when I got tired of dying all the time with my Fire/EM blaster (hey, I was a newbie at the time and didn't know how to play the character then) I rolled a tanker.

Then there was my repeat last year of my long deleted blaster reborn as a joke in Delta Farce; strangely enough I didn't have any problems with him this time around... you don't suppose a few years of experience had anything to do with it? Hmm, I also have a Fire/Fire blaster sitting in the teens named "The Amazing Redshirt" in a red, ripped shirt, black pants and black boots. Someday I need to level that character, something about the name and costume just makes me smile.

I've also had lots of fun with my old Conan homage named Gortak, a BS/Regen scrapper in the rough leather pants, sword belt, rough leather boots, bare chest and a skull cap helmet with horns on it. The look and name just say "Barbarian" to me.

I find that the character's name is one of the most important things in my enjoyment of a character. A case in point is my Stone/EM tanker BarneyStone... I loved the name so much I stuck with it and got her to 50 despite the poor performance of the Energy Melee set for tanks. On the other hand I've abandoned promising characters many times simply because the name didn't work for me... those are usually names I come up with in a hurry because I've decided to roll up a X/X (insert AT) and have to come up with some name when I've finished the costume.

<edit>
Oh, in case you aren't aware of this you CAN change your global name ONCE; it defaults to your first character created but you can pick another name. Under the menu there's an option to "Change Global Chat Handle". Make sure you know what you want because you'll only be able to change this ONCE; whatever you change it to you're stuck with.

Sorry I didn't check this thread when I first got the PM. Been a little busy. Let's see I'll answer this in order.

First, if a character is petitioned over a name it doesn't get banned. The name gets genericed. The GM's change the name to something like Generic Hero 0000065465, and they send you an email telling you to think of I think 3 alternative names which the GM's will check and give you the first one that isn't already in use.

Now if the character is really low level it might be easier for you to just remake it.

GM's don't usually go to banning unless the person is a repeat offender who has been warned several times, or if they go out and buy a rename token and change the name back or to something else offensive or copyrighted/trademarked.

Hope that helps.

Oh and costumes are another thing that the GM's generic when reported. What happens for example is if someone copies an popular comic book super hero the player may log in to find his costume reset to the basic generic costume you see when you start creating your characters in the costume creator.

I was just wondering, if someone starts out on the hero side as say,..controller, & they want to switch to the villain side, do they automatically become a dominator?

Posted

If you switch sides you keep your class so you can have a controller villain or a corrupter hero.

Oh, ok, thanks.

btw, ol' Bea was not working out, so I have a new controller on the hero side, her name is Controlling Queen. She will want to switch over to the dark side come lvl 20.
