Thanks. All this tech talk confuses me! Anyway, w/ the stalker, sometimes all three paper missions are "kidnap" ones, so it was hard to avoid. They are a PITA! I wish there was a better way to kidnap, like drug & drag or something.

It wasn't an ATTACK power I wanted recharging faster so the name threw me off.

Anyway... It takes all kinds. lol

And yes I did ask folks for those wondering... but got answers like "I don't know what your asking for." or "I don't know where to find them either." and the like. So either folks assumed I should know that Attack rate meant Recharge for everything unlike what I thought they were or they too were clueless and just making do withought. Couldnt make guesswork back in 2004 on a level 22 toon... Knew the game was unforgiving with cash for sellbacks for enhancement choice "whoopsies".

PS: doing random paper missions on that "stalker", I hope you remembered to avoid escorts like the plague..... they make you shut down stealth.

Also sorry, I had no clue that the trial accounts had been so hobbled thanks to 'gold farmers/paied leveling'... or I would have been more helpful.

I have no Protector toons. But I will start one and maybee bump into you.

Happy New Year!

Okay here's something you can do to avoid those Kidnap missions. It's annoying but it gives you a little bit of control over what the random mission generator gives you.

When you get a bunch of missions you don't like go to the ferry or Pocket D entrance and switch zones then come back. That will get you a new list of missions. Do that as often as you need to to get the paper/radio mission you want.

I know that you'll get a lot of the same missions over and over if you just do paper/radio missions, but the devs never intended for them to be the only thing you do. They are just supposed to be repeatable filler for when you are between contacts or need a few quick XP points to level up. So when we use them in a way not intended we have to put up with some annoyances.

You don't even need to do that now. Simply accept one of them and then abandon the mission. The paper will provide you with a new set.

Thanks for clarifying that.

Also, if you hit team, it should bring up the "search" box if you are unteamed. Set it to "Looking for Teams" and include in the text field "Send invite/On a trial account"

Hey, we have an ulterior motive; the more new players we get to sign up the larger the player base, the more people we have to team with and the more money the developers have to put into updates and keep the servers running. Therefore it's in our own best interests to welcome new players and show them around... once you start to understand the basics you'll find that this game is a lot of fun, you'll subscribe and eventually you'll be one of us old time veteran players yourself welcoming new players into our little addiction.

More players playing the game means more teammates. Once you get a little experience under your belt you'll be an asset to the game and an asset to your teammates. Lack of experience is an inevitable consequence of being new to the game; all of us were there at one time and most people learn the ropes and become welcome additions to the population.

We're real big here on "paying it forward" with new players, you'll pay us back for the help we're giving you now by helping someone else learn the ropes later on. Almost all of us are mature players and we treat everyone in game like intelligent adults. Trash talking, rudeness, "leetspeak" and the like is strongly frowned upon. This isn't to say that there aren't kids playing, but most of them behave in a civil, mature fashion. Heck, I had a friend I'd played with for over a year before finding out he was only 13... I'd taken him for a 18-25 year old from the way he behaved and chatted.

You'll find players here from age 7 (usually with Dad sitting right next to them playing another character with them) to 70 with the majority falling into the 20-40 range. I'm one of the old farts at 45 although one of my buddies in game is pushing 50. We know all about the Rubix Cube and the red junk that went into Stretch Armstrong.

Hey do you remember back when your dad's idea of a remote control was yelling at you to get up and change the channel?

Or better yet. Remember our first video game?

I'd still be my grandpa's remote if their old cabinet TV hadn't died... he kept that thing in working order until he couldnt find replacement tubes in the city any more.

I don't know how good I will be at helping someone else. What is "leetspeak"? I am 45 too, although I seem very young. Unfortunately, I do not have anyone I know personally to come & sit w/ me to help me play this or play someone else on their laptop & help me that way.

Leet (or "1337"), also known as eleet or leetspeak, is an alternative alphabet for the English language that is used primarily on the Internet.

7|-|15 15 L337 5P34|< (Translation: this is leet speak)

IM speak is used by text messaging and is the shortening of words to as few as one letter.

DIS iz IM spk

The general consensus is that the people that use those two forms of communication usually turn out to be immature jerks. Now that doesn't always apply to everyone. There are some people that are roleplaying a character but you can tell them apart because the jerks will insult and mock you if you mention that you have no clue what they are saying.

Thanks for clearing that up. I don't get leet, so I do not bother..sometimes I might put in an im shortcut occasionally tho

I think everyone uses the occasional shortcut from time to time. The bad experiences seem to come from the ones that use it all the time.

Also my observations are based solely on my own personal ingame experiences. Other people have reported different encounters. So my advice is don't be surprised if you encounter it from time to time but don't let another persons opinion color your own perception. There are always exceptions that surprise you.

Changing the channel wasn't one of my more vivid memories; Dad was pretty well at the forefront of the technical curve and we got a TV with remote back when I was around 8 or so. Even then he tended to pick a channel and stay with it... it wasn't until years later when he got DirectTV and a DVR that he really discovered the joys of surfing.

I well remember when Dad came home with Pong; then a few years later we got the Atari 2600 and played Space Invaders, Meteor and a bunch of other games. I was looking through the attic a couple of years ago and found that old Atari and about a half dozen game cartridges... it still worked just fine too. I was surprised at what people would pay for those things on Ebay; I think I got about $500 out of the lot.

Freewaydoggie, what I meant about paying help forward is that at some point in the future you can help a new player along the way we've been helping you. Back when I first started playing there were a couple of players who really helped me learn what I was doing, I try to return that favor now by being the Jedi Master helping the new Padawan. You'll find that most of us have similar stories.

Bar none this is the best gaming community I've ever seen. We have no interest in taking advantage of new players or deriding them for "don't you know ____ you noob", we're far more interested in helping people learn so that they'll be better players and better teammates. This can be a very complex game with all the aspects of AT interaction and character build decisions not to mention the incredibly complicated Invention system (which you don't NEED to worry about if you don't want to, and in fact I wouldn't suggest even thinking about it until you have a strong grasp of the basics).

If you're confused about anything we'll be more than happy to help explain it for you... you've seen some of that in the responses you've gotten to your posts here in this thread.

Thanks call. It's just I have never been good enough in any mmo to help MYSELF, let alone other ppl. I hope that I can at least direct someone in the right direction someday. I tried out the invention thing on my girls (I know in other mmo's they call that "crafting"), but like u said, I need to know more about the whole system 1st. & yes, I have had my share of players being very cold towards me being a new inexperienced player & they were very rude & unwilling to help me. Especially in Jade Dynasty. But that doesn't matter 'cuz JD does not have what CoV has.

You're very welcome; new players entering the game is always a healthy thing. Without new people things stagnate and as older players slowly leave the game we end up with fewer and fewer people playing and paying the bills for Paragon and NCSoft. Let that happen long enough and they'll pull the plug and we'll all be looking for another game.

After over 6 years here in CoH I don't look forward to trying to find another community like this one. I've played WoW, Champions, DCU, D&D online and others without finding anything like this community.

I don't know anything about D&D online, but unfortunately this question might be skirting forum rules.... we're not supposed to discuss other games here. Casual mention in passing is okay, but detailed discussions are a no-no.

In all honesty I don't remember for sure, I only played a few hours before deciding I didn't enjoy the game and that was a few years ago. No, it wasn't other players who caused that since I spent most of that time solo... I just didn't like the way it played.

The DDO forums though weren't anything like ours here; a cursory look over the recent threads while I was playing there looked like a group of 12-15 year olds throwing temper tantrums at each other.

The Champions forums were kind of a split personality... the CoH players trying it out were much like you find here while there was a sizeable contingent of loudmouth jerks from other games. I played there for a few months but came back to CoH because it was a much more polished game with a better community.

Worst forum experience I witnessed was on the forums of a recently launched space MMO. About 2 months after launch the game was put on sale for a week at $10. off and some of the forum members got so outraged they were posting insults and threats against the devs families on the games Wiki page. Needless to say they got banned.

Big thing about leet speak was the intent to hide the words you were using, usually from text filters.

And while the first TV I remember had a remote (that docked into the molding), it was also (IIRC) one where the first 13 or so channels had individual tuning wheels in the control panel (and contrast, brightness, etc, were all knobs).

I remember the VCR and the NES both had different tunings on channel 3.

Or maybe it was channel 3 and the NES... *shrug*

ok, now I have another question: Is it possible that I can change power sets? Like if my toon has dual swords & instead I want her to have superstrength, can that be arranged? & can her 2nd set be changed too?

No. Primary/Secondary powersets cannot be changed once selected. You have to create a new character. It's one of the very few things the devs have flat out told us they will never let us do.

Edit: On a basic North American account we can make 144 characters, and up to 396 if we buy extra character slots. That's more than any of us will ever use. If the game only allowed us 2-3 characters total then the devs might have allowed us to change powersets.

I have over 100 characters spread across 2 accounts.
