Try restarting your computer if you haven't. I had the same issue but restarted and got the patch to download.

I didn't state this before but now as it heads on to or over and hour I explain.

I have had coh download/patch over 5 times now and apply, still can't get in.

I have rebooted my pc and once again still can't get in.

I have shut off the game probably 30 times or more now and still can't get in.

Oh look it's updated/downloading and applying once again... I have a great feeling I won't get in let's find out....

...... waiting
.........waiting
...........waiting
............Still applying
.............using bad words at this point
...............waiting with annoyance and little faith it will work
.................running out of words to explain waiting
...................waiting while hubby is in game and laughs at my words of waiting

Loads game.....

Doesn't work.... has slight faith to try ONE last time....

Reloading......

I waas playing fine after the servers went down and then back up--for about 4 hours. Then logged out and wanted to start a second game, and it downloaded a patch. And now it won't work. Didn't work when it downloaded a patch; won't work now. My wife's computer won't even download a patch. Get the same old answer each time.

I'm having the same issue, and nothing I've tried is working. Kinda sucks, considering I also have scheduled events in a few here.

When I went to shut down I got an error stating there was a process stopping the shutdown, but it closed it out after about 10 seconds. My guess is the game is leaving a hung process so if anyone still has the issue and has good tech skills they could probably identify it, or for the less technical minded... just reboot and if hangs tell the computer to shutdown anyway.
Wouldn't opening task manager with CoH's launcher open and closing it and the entire process tree work then?

Hrm. Apparently restarting is what I needed to do to get the patch update to trigger.

Having this problem. Tried deleting checksum and the .prv file. Restarted and still can't log in despite servers being "Up."

I think this is a continuation of another bug we've had for a couple of issues. That is, you'll download a patch, then you'll get a warning message about not having enough room or the right privilages, but when you click the ok button and reload, it patches.

I belive this new bug is just this getting worse >.<

any suggestions on how to fix this with a mac?

basically, if you see a miki on Triumph, it's probably cute and it's probably me.

Huge thanks to cuppamanga and all the folks in the mac help forum for prolonging my borrowed time on this game.

I fixed by deleting the coh.checksum file. This forces a verification of all files, and it looks at the files to reassess the build.

worked for me.

Just booted up the client, downloaded a new patch and having the same issue now. I am not happy =[. Gonna try the chksum deletion if the next pass fails.

**Update - Deleted .prv and chksum files, reverified and still locked out of game .

Time to send Avatea a S.O.S.

***Update -Deleted .prv and chksum files, rebooted PC, flushed DNS, reverified twice and still locked out of game . There goes my stress free Sunday.

Ran into the same issue-I tried the instructions in the other thread about this (delete .checksum and .PRV files, flush DNS cache, and let the game repatch). It worked for me BUT I had to verify files at least twice before it stopped fixing things.

This game is on strike two now. Screwed up last night. Screwed up this morning.

I deleted the checksum and the .prv file, and it's checksumming right now. I hope this will let me through.

I was playing just fine up until an hour ago when I logged out to have dinner. Came back and the game won't let me in with the message in the thread title. I tried verifying files and restarting the computer. So far this hasn't helped.

*edit*
It seems that deleting the checksum and the other file is what made it work for me. The game reverified and fixed maps.pigg plus a few other files that went by too fast to read. Seems to be working for the time being.

I'm having the same problem now on my primary PC. I can still log in on my laptop, but on my desktop PC I'm getting this error. I was running fine on my desktop then quit the game and started it up again and it applied a game patch - I think this is part of the problem - and now I'm getting that error.

I have tried deleting the checksum and .prv file. Still unable to get to the server character selection screen. When I click on a server, any server, I get the "No response from server..." error. Any other ideas on how to get around this?

Also getting this problem. Deleted checksum and the prv file. Waiting to see what happens.

**Update, deleting the files did not work for me.
**Update 2, I did finally get it to work correctly. I had to restart the computer.

If you're running Windows Vista or Windows 7, make sure you're running the game as administrator, especially if you've installed it in the default location.

Other than that, I can only assume this is some bizzare problem where some files in the City of Heroes directory are set to read only and can't be updated/overwritten.

I restarted the comp. And when I started up the updater, it downloaded and applied a patch. I can get in now. Hopefully it won't apply the bad patch again if I restart the game.

Does the mechanism for bypassing the updater no longer work? I tried creating a shortcut to cityofheroes.exe with a -project coh at the end and it told me I couldn't run the program directly. I was hoping to bypass the updater for the time being to prevent a bad patch from being applied again.

And here we go again... The game decided to patch itself again and I can't get past the server selection screen...

Check the "version.ini" file in your City of Heroes folder. When I couldn't log in, it read "Version=1900.201011102104.24"

By forcing the updater to use a different IP address (see the "Slow Updating section in the post http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...657#post803657 )

I managed to get the version to be "Version=1900.201011102104.27", and was able to log in.

My conclusion is that one (or more) of the update servers has the wrong patch - likely it didn't get the weekend update, and if your updater chooses that one, you get reverted to the older client, and are locked out.

Forcing the updater to connect to a different update server fixes things. The ipconfig /flushdns forces your computer to re-route the connection to the update server, which might get you a good one, but might not, as would rebooting - which explains why sometimes those work, and sometimes they don't. You should probably delete the .checksum file every time you change the update server IP too.

Hopefully they'll straighten this out soon, but in the meantime, this worked - for me, anyway...

That makes sense to me. I was just about to say that it seems there are 2 different patches and my computer keeps switching between them. I'm gonna try your suggestion.

Edit: Followed directions, but my computer refuses to display addresses. What address did you use that found the right patch?

I used "C:\Games\City Of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -ps 64.25.34.144

I got the address from the "nslookup cohupdate.coh.com" command referenced in the post.

Ya, I tried that line and my computer won't display the screen for more than a fraction of a second. My wife's comp (which is experiencing the same problem--sometimes good version, sometimes not) showed only 1 IP address, again for a few seconds, and then vanished. Not computer literate enough to know why I can't get this screen to just sit open.

Tried your IP address and nothing changed--tried with with all the other fixes simultaneously, and still nothing. Maybe the fix is more about waiting until you randomly get the right patch server, which is something I would have no control over. I'm sure they'll fix this...Monday.

Has anyone tried running the game "as administrator" to get the update to take?
